Wonderful. Another canuck ranting about how bad the people in the USA are.
Listen real close, Dudley, and everyone else who isn't a knuckle-dragging yank like myself:
1. The idealism of corporate America != Joe American's idealism 2. The policy of the American Government != Joe American's ideas for policies 3. The media's reaction to "incidents" != Joe American's reaction
What's wrong with people in the USA? What's wrong with any nation's people? This is just a knee-jerk political reaction to Columbine. Remember, we get sensationalized reports on incidents like this all the time (it ONLY happens in the USA, cuz we're all gun-toting maniacs (**cough** ALBERTA SCHOOL SHOOTING **cough**)).
So some paranoid parents want this. I can't think of too many American students who are really going to care enough to report some wierdo down the hall who wears black all the time and talks to himself.
This, coming from someone who lives in a nation where the Catholic church has an OFFICIAL lobbying group in the government, sounds a bit irrational. Do YOU and everyone you know in your neighborhood want a church/state mixture? My GOD! What's the matter with you Canadians?
WAVE is WRONG. But there's nothing WRONG with the average person in the USA. This is just another classic example of a government and it's media cheerleaders who are out of touch with it's people.

And, let's say Intel bottoms out (highly unlikely) someday because AMD kills them with chip sales. Big deal.

Why are we now competing? Well heck I think I'll go code a new GPL scripting language... oh no wait, how about instead, in the true spirit of the Linux community, I'll help an established language like Perl by making modules and CONTRIBUTING and reviewing source code, beta testing, etc. etc.
RH is doing EVERYTHING they can to become the Microsoft of Linux (granted its not a perfect parallel, but be imaginative). That is true, but NT has a big head start. No, 8 machine failover is not stable, but NT at least ALMOST has a real presence in the high-end market. Linux hasn't even truly begun to concentrate on the "big iron".
If we are "going to get there first", we^H^H the Linux develop team have their work cut out for them.
----- if ($anyone_cares) {print "Just Another Perl Newbie"}
This is kinda ridiculous. Why is it that corporations are expecting the free(Linux) to be as "enterprise server ready" as the expensive(NT)?
Linux, as far as I know, wasn't designed with that in mind. It was originally Linus' hobby, for crying out loud. Also, it is a very young OS. It is right now good at what its intended use is... squeezing good use out of lower-end, and sometimes antiquated PC's.
I mean, try to make a web/mail server for your corporation with Windows NT on a leftover 486/16MB. Can't do it. But I did that with Linux, and it runs fairly fast for its hardware handicap.
But it has not yet been coded to do what NT is aimed at... taking over the high end server market. Linux developers (whom are gentlemen that deserve our utmost respect) are now beginning to seriously address Linux' lack in this area. I imagine that since Linux is already king in low-end servers, now it will turn its attention towards the higher-end market. Thus mindcraft and company have helped shape the development of Linux in a good way... instead of us madly shouting "unfair benchmarks!", we need to simply begin working towards what NT has already claimed... higher speed on the big iron. Hopefully we can do so without the bloat and instability that has plagued NT, though.

Let Jon and the creators of shows like South Park raise your children! EVERY CHILD IN NORTH AMERICA SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO WATCH PORN! It's good for them.
A 3 year old is a human too! With a big long Bill of Rights! They are capable of making their own educated decisions about life! And today's latest crop of Katz Approved(TM) movies will truly mold admirable character in them. Away with morality! Heck, away with clothing while we're at it! Who needs government! Jon for leader of the earth!
...I forgot my tag. But amazingly, I think my tag fits it a little better. Welcome to KatzDot. (K.)

I don't like RHAT at all anymore. I'm not trying to get others to hate them, but I am just pointing out that they are distancing themselves from the Linux community, and are totally ruining their image as part of the FS/OS movement (in reference to the afore-mentioned quasi-proprietary RHAT linux stuff). And they are on the road to splintering Linux the way the big boys did Unix.
BTW, I am not overly fond of Canadians... but do we really need to kill them? Some of them are quite nice! Well, the German ones. Sometimes.

Wow. RedHat really is getting ambitious. I am through with them. I swear I'm going debian with my next distro.
...why? Isn't the Linux community about cooperating and building tools and such that complement eachother?
Why is RedHat doing this? Competing with Slashdot? Competing with Linux.com?
Why are we now competing? Well heck I think I'll go code a new GPL scripting language... oh no wait, how about instead, in the true spirit of the Linux community, I'll help an established language like Perl by making modules and CONTRIBUTING and reviewing source code, beta testing, etc. etc.
RH is doing EVERYTHING they can to become the Microsoft of Linux (granted its not a perfect parallel, but be imaginative). They are distancing themselves from the community and breaking the original spirit by becoming money-hungry competitors instead of contributors. They don't want to HELP Linux, they want to BECOME Linux. Suits. Next we'll see proprietary "RH ONLY!" extensions and file formats. Goodbye RH, hello Debian.

s/8 machine failover/the necissity of 8 machine failover just to run one server/
----- if ($anyone_cares) {print "Just Another Perl Newbie"}
