    Interesting, but he sure does beat around the bush. Essentially, it seems that he is trying to say the power factor is simply a measure of efficiency of the transformer. Is that true? That the UPS may consume 650 W but only deliver 410 W?

    Does this have something to do with the fact that the 120 VAC we get from the wall is measured RMS? So presumably at the peak of the 60 Hz sine wave, which would be +/- 170 V, the load would be instantaneously greater?

    Or am I demonstrating the dangers inherent in having an incomplete understanding of a subject and trying to talk about it. ;)

    Perhaps this is an appropriate discussion in which to ask: Can somebody explain the difference between Watts and Volt-Amps?

    (You give the example of a 400 W computer running on 120 VAC consuming a max of 3.33 A. While your math makes sense to me, UPS manufacturers always rate their gear in VA instead of W. Why?)

    Well, that was apparent to me just from reading the extract.

    "No more than 5-9"? What kind of indecision and illogic does that reveal? Anyone who can count on their toes realises that 9 > 5, and even 6 > 5. So is it "no more than 5", or "no more than 9"?

    Furthermore, there is no IMAGE tag in HTML, despite what the submitter seemed to state.

    I see what you are saying. But my point was a step removed from that: the skip protection must obviously take into account measures for guarding against head crashes. Otherwise, there would be no skip protection. Therefore, it is likely not an issue.

    Besides, people talk about snowboarding with these things, dropping them on the floor, etc. all the time.

    (I don't own an iPod... yet. I am itchy, though.)

    The "myth" that I would like to clear up is that Apple DID have a clue and a lot of great people at Apple have been working really hard for that last few months, making a lot of personal sacrifices to make sure that all the awesome work from Dr. Varadarajan and the rest of the cluster team could be possible and successful.

    Why would any grocery store spend money to give you that? It would serve only to ensure that you spent the bare minimum of money.

    On the other hand, if you plan your shopping list and pay attention to your surroundings, you'll get a feel for the grocery store after four or five visits. You can then do the optimum route thing using the magic of your own brain. Works for me.

    Right... because the mass of a DVD is so astronomical and it is so unwieldy, eh?

    Think about the fact that today's pen drives are probably built out of more plastic (not to mention electronics, connectors, etc.) than a single DVD or CD.

    And of course, no matter what form the actual medium takes, they'll still be packaged in boxes. That's what actually takes up the space.

    If you collected all the DVDs (sans packaging) that reside in a typical blockbuster store, I bet you could store them in a milk crate or two.

    there are many alternative products that amatuer users can get their hands on without a high initial investment, like Paint Shop Pro eval and the Gimp, and they will prefer those alternative products in the workplace

    Right, so that's why everybody is using Gimp and Dumbassname and KKopyKat in the workplace, where Linux installations are blowing away Adobe products at an unbelievable pace in the real world?

    Looks like they forgot to finish updating the text on that page... notice the second-last paragraph:

    The Developer Tools CD which comes with Mac OS X includes Project Builder, the Interface Builder and other development tools. Mac OS X features Project Builder 2.0, Interface Builder 2.3 and AppleScript Studio 1.2. Try out the new widgets in Interface Builder such as progress wheel and brushed metal windows.

    I've been using PB 2.1 and IB 2.3.2 for months now, both of which are newer than described. I suspect that was a cut-and-paste vestige from the Jaguar blurb.

    (Am I correct to assume that the application formerly known as Project Builder is now renamed Xcode? Does Interface Builder still exist under same name?)

    On the other hand, some of us like having the choice to let the user-agent do that when NXDOMAIN is returned, which uh, it never is with Sitefinder.

    (I mean, I like root beer. Therefore, I think that all fast food chains should make it the default, and not provide user choice... after all, I like it.)
