The censored version of the tape made everybody wonder, why Bin Laden is supporting Bush. The uncensored version speaks a different language.

  11. Why we need true open source drivers on Modem Success Stories With Linux? · · Score: 1

A year ago or so I bought a PC for home so I do not have to carry my laptop home if I may need to access some email at work, etc. The PC had a PCI card modem, so I asked in the shop if it is linux compatible, i.e. not a software modem - the
PC was sold without any OS so it should work with any OS - if not, I would choose to buy an external hardware modem. They told me it is a winmodem type but a linux driver exists too. Fine, I tried it and spend an hour finding/downloading/installing the linux driver. Actually I returned the first modem and tried another one. Finally it worked (I think it actually works full speed), but it doesn't support FAX. That was the other thing I expected the modem to do (I do not care about voice mode at all). The website from conexant claimed, the driver will be improved soon and provide better stability/speed and FAX support. Later I went to conexant to check for the promised updates, but they now do sell the driver via Linuxant. I would have better spent my money on a hardware modem - no special software/driver
required. I do not see how supporting linuxant would support linux. So I will sell this modem sooner or later on ebay. And I will not - ever - choose some closed software again. Spending extra time and/or money on something which stops working after the next OS version comes out doesn't make much sense.

  15. Hard to predict on 235,000 Fewer Programmers by 2015 · · Score: 1

I think a prediction like this is very hard to make. Surely you can write better and better software and eventually, you have a tool which can do some job perfectly. But then new things become important and new tools develope. Only few programs survive for years, or decades, and there is always something new comming. You may think, PC's become like a 'type-writer' in the end, something rocksolid and unchanging. But: type-writers changed a lot as well and presently computers with 'Word' are not just the newest kind of 'type-writer'. As far as jobs go, I think there is -always- a need for mind workers. Even if we could build smart AIs, they would be more of an extension of our brains, not a replacement. Why? Simple answer: if could down the branch your sitting on, you will fall down the tree! If the society doesn't provide jobs anymore, then either everyone owns a one-man-factory which does everything for free, or one owns all but cannot sell anything.

You can start multiple X Servers, so start another server for the second monitor using a separate XF86config file. In the XF86config file, you configure the input from the other keyboard and mouse. You must start the second X server by hand, because the USB keyboard and mouse won't be connected all time. If it's a PC and mouse/kbd are connected always, you can add the X server startup to the appropriate config file for your xdm. But for a laptop, I would suggest to write a short script to start the X server on the second screen by hand.

Would be nice if a distribution could do this for you, but I do not know any. Perhaps somebody can write a nice setup tool (if it doesn't exist already).

Personally I prefer to do things myself, but you can't do everything all time. So the real question is, if this box comes with support (and what quality that support has), rather the question if you can trust it now. Just like your home made solution, it will have bugs and will need patches/upgrades etc. If you have a channel to report problems to, and they fix it for a resonable subscription price, then go for it. You should also ask, for how long the support will be available (1 year, 10 years, ...).

  23. a more polite solution (perhaps) on Blocking Kazaa 2.0? · · Score: 1

First of all: I understand why you want to block it.

However, I believe that for each measure there will be a counter-measure and at some point it actually hurts either productivity or freedom of users. Well, while 'freedom' is not necessarily what the users should have in a computing environment, it may hinder creativity in the sense that each time somebody has some free time and likes to try some crazy idea he has to ask for permission, and will most likely be disencouraged tampering with the system.

Depending on how serious the problem is, I would try arguing with people, asking for integrity and common sense instead of imposing rules. If the problem is serious, however, go ahead and block everything which is not on the 'positive' list. To stop unwanted traffic, allow only high volume traffic to a list of 'allowed' ip addresses.
If traffice exceeds the allowed amount, you can make your proxy return a polite message instead of the wanted content.
