  2. Qualified technical people in the nuclear industry on Fun Things To Do With a Math Or Science Degree? · · Score: 0

The nuclear power plant industry is in desparate need of people with an ability in math and science. I just retired as an operations instructor. I had a degree in physics and a masters in math. I was selected by Admiral Rickover for his nuclear officer program in 1974 and served in the nuclear navy on a submarine for several years before taking a career at a large nuclear power plant in Mississippi in 1980. People like myself are retiring in large numbers, and in my case as early as possible (55) due to the job stress and burnout.

There used to be a supply of qualified technical people from the nuclear navy, but that dried up almost completely.

There used to be a supply of Nuclear Engineers and now there are hardly any at all.

Right now there is a very high demand for nuclear operations people who can pass the Generic Fundamentals exam the Nuclear Regulatory Commission requires for someone to obtain an operator's license. Its an exam on Reactor Theory, Thermodynamics and power plant components. They even give you their exam question bank to study.

Its a shame that many engineers with college degrees can't pass it.

I would have to say that the pool of new qualified people is near zero .

Someone who can do math and science would be welcomed with open arms (and $$$) in this industry right now. There are new reactor plant sites desparate for technical people all over the U.S. Many jobs do not require a college degree. Most of the people I worked with did not have degrees and made just as much as I did ( ~$100K ). The attainment of a Reactor Operator or Senior Reactor Operator license is the key. Once I got my Senior Reactor Operator license, it didn't matter how many degrees I had or even if I did not have one.

And by the way, after working nearly 28 years at that plant, I got more radiation exposure from dental x-rays and a chest x-ray than I ever got combined at the nuclear plant. Nothing at all to be afraid of.

The sad thing about nuclear power plants is that the technology is stuck decades in the past. Not cutting edge except from paper cuts.

You must be one of the nazi-grammar policemen I hear about here on slashdot. Your post kind of contradicts yourself with that non-word pretentious thing and improper adjective to describe Latin grammar that you used. I understood perfectly, however. So what kind of penalty are you going to impose on yourself or ahould I report you to the the head-nazi. But this could backfire and you may come back at me like was done to Joe the Plumber for asking a question. So I will go back into my hole now where nazi-grammar-police aren't allowed. There is a sign at the entrance to that effect.

I need an equation editor. Google apps won't do that. The rquation editor in Open Office Writer is much easier and intuitive than that propritary one that comes with Microsoft word. Maybe I will write a web based math editor. Its been a project I have dreamed about doing for years, ever since I wrote a big web app for the company I retired from.

Those brine shrimp are in the water where its cool. I think they will be fine. If this plant uses water as a copling medium to reject the portion of unusable energy (every real heat engine has to), its likely that marine life and algae will flourish in it, just like they do in all the power plant discharge canals around the world. Those places are where regular folks go fishing in the winter time and put real food on the table. Alligators like those warm water places down in Florida, Lousisiana, and Mississippi, so watch out.

Look simple mind. If you burn something, its giving off energy in the process. duh. that's why even a caveman can figure out that staying next to a fire will keep him warm. From thermodynamics and heat engines, the greater T hot is (the temperature of the heat source) the greater the thermal efficiency. Carnot proved that in the century before the last one. The combustion of trash gives off more energy than it takes to ignite it. I am fascinated by the idea of doing it at a high temperature and breaking everything down into plasma.

I like your post and the way you think. The other nerd just says it won't work with no supporting evidence. It looks to me that the company thats doing this would be the source of info. If it does not work as the nerd guy says, then why would this company be going into business doing it. Most companies won't survive long pissing their capital away, unless they have a "Bwarny Fwank/Nancy Pelosi/Harry Reid" in their pocket to bail them out.

Your manager is ridiculous but you gotta do what the boss thinks even if its stupid, like it usually is. Its probably worse than you think. It was probably your boss's boss who came up with it. And he or she picked it while attending some conference or meeting somewhere, or read in one of those pinhead management books. Maybe they had a big meeting in the conference room and put those sticky notes with all their clever ideas on one of those easels, and use root cause analysis to come up with the answer. Of course they probably still have it up with a big do not disturb sign on and they worked on it all weekend. six of one or half a dozen of the other. Let it go. This is great. I just chatted with one of the developers named Irus for a new web site called IMedix over at

    http://www.imedix.com//

Its tools like this that will make the internet a good thing, when its focus is in helping people instead of trying to exploit them.

The two guys who designed this site have done such a wonderful job getting all the bugs out and making all their features work flawlessly. That's what customers want. I don't know what kind of web development tool they used, but it really works. It took them working night and day for quite a number of weeks getting all the features integrated and functioning properly. Development tools can revolutionize the way internet web applications are enginneered from their inception through design, and testing, to make the new user experience pretty comfortable the first time they log into it.

This IMedix thing is kind of novel. Its number one purpose and focus is on helping people help themselves and help each other with common problems that can range from heart disease, and diabetes, to depression and alcoholism. You ask a question and get answers. You read what others have asked, The question and answer format of learning is as ancient as Aristotle. You can't beat it. In today's world, you may not have the luxury of talking to your doctor at length oabout a medical question or you may have more questions that you would like to ask but don't want to pay for another office visit just for that. This kind of a forum is just right for that.

So what I am trying to say, is that a tool such as the one in this article, if out into the right set of hands, it can yield some extraordinary humanitarian results. I would call that patriot or even heroic.
