Its now 4PM EST so they have had a few hours to come up with SOMETHING, but their website [sco.com] only has two PRs so far today... one about a new release, and another about a partnership with Ericom.

  4. A Question on FCC to Require Broadcasters to Keep Tapes of Shows · · Score: 2, Interesting

The FCC is also considering reducing what you must claim in order to enter a complaint, thus opening the floodgates for indecency complaints by groups like the Parents Television Council, which is already keeping the FCC censors busy.

But doesn't the FCC only have power over the broadcast networks? Cable and satellite are pay services unlike the over the air networks. I know the FCC has a lot of power, but can't the cable networks tell the FCC to suck it? Channels like HBO & Showtime can show whatever they want, does this not also apply to places like Comedy Central? I have seen the South Park movie shown uncut on Comedy Central (albeit at 1am). It seems to me that the censorship on cable networks has far more to do with them not offending thier advertisers than the FCC.

You know, I was just about to mod this as funny, but it actually is a good idea. We have a mini fridge in our office (which is behind a badged door that ~ 20 people have access to in a building of 2k employees). As long as we are not seen bringing it in, and we don't open one until after work hours, the boss doesn't mind. This also builds comradarie, and you don't have to go out to a crowded ass bar for happy hour. :)

Well, Abraham Lincoln said that the best way to get an unfair law repealed is to enforce it fully and swiftly. Does Hatch have children? If so, do they download music? Give them a mandatory 10 year sentence or whatever the hell they are doing now to punish people for downloading music. What pisses me off is that these laws NEVER apply to the people (and whomever gives them money) who are passing them. I bet you good money that if Hatch's kids got put in jail for downloading music or some other such fucking nonsense, he'd have a bit of a different view of things. If this law passes and it "makes VCRs illegal", then yes, I want the cops to just walk down the street house to house arresting people because of it. Let's see how easily Hatch gets re-elected then.

It is hard to be compulsive about anything and still maintain a healthy relationship. Just try to find a happy medium, and things will work out. For instance, I love the chronic, but I am still able to have a good relationship with my SO, because I don't let it stop me from getting things done around the house. This keeps the SO happy :) Perhaps MMORPGs are not for you, they are a huge time sink. I pretty much had to dump EverQuest because it was affecting not only my relationship with my SO at the time, but also my work and relationships with friends.

  19. DSL or Cable? on Suggestions for a Home VOIP Provider? · · Score: 1

Here is something to consider, do you have DSL or Cable? If you have DSL, it may be cheaper to see if your phone company has a package that includes DSL & unlimited long distance. That's what I have from Verizon. A buddy of mine got Vonage and was telling me about it to get me to switch. But I don't like the cable company here (they charge waay too much), so I have DSL. Verizon has to sell you DSL without having a POTS line because of FCC regs, but I don't think those regs state a cap on the charges, and it would likely be quite a bit more than it's worth. So if are going to switch to VOIP you may want to get a cable modem if you don't already have one.

Yes, but that is what they are paid to do by the music industry. RIAA management keeps telling them to come up with uncrackable DRM, and if it does get cracked, it doesn't matter to the lab, they got paid. As long as the RIAA throws money at this (and let's hope it's a very LONG time) the labs will get major bling-bling (which could be very good for long term research on more important things) and the in the long run, the RIAA simply puts itself out of business from years of hemmoraging cash on litigation and needless DRM research. :)
