2 words: planned obsolence. They (companies) do this for pretty much everything out there now.. Things are just not built to last like they used to be.:(
Now, it'd be relatively simple to do this, just require that ISPs offer forwarding service for up to a year after a customer cancels, and the new ISP can kick back an e-mail telling anybody who's e-mails that the user has moved to them
A good point, but with one flaw I think. If the new ISP sends an email to the sender each time a piece of mail is forwarded from the old domain, what about spam? For each piece of spam mail, you would get twice the email volume. Not to mention that the spammers databases would see the reply and know that the email addy is valid:(
...or bundling less desirable tracks with hot singles.
Sheesh, don't they get it? I can't speak for everyone of course, but this is the very reason I have stopped buying CDs by pretty much every artist out there.. There are only a few bands now that I even buy the CD for, because most of it is one or two good songs, and the rest is just filler. Just when I thought they were starting to catch on, they go and do something stupid again.
Well, maybe the MPAA will get it right, and offer paid downloads without commercials and extra crap that a lot of people simply don't want. Once bandwidth and (good) video capture equipment gets cheaper, they may have a chance to do things that are good for the customer and still profitable. I guess I just don't get it, the *AA industries (and most companies) always seem to see customer satisfaction and profitablity as mutually exclusive. What's known about the guy that is taking Valenti's place, Congressman Billy Tauzin?
See, this pisses me off too.. Showtime cancelled Odyssey 5 (which was a fantastic show) because they wanted to keep just Jeremiah as thier sci-fi show. Now they go and cancel it. Sheesh.
Don't forget massive incompatibility and upgrade hassles.:)
I suppose the question is, Is the end result worth the time invested to get there? I think it is.. if we could have true IP security, better email to stop spam, etc... Yeah, it's a lot of work up front, but the end result is very nice to have and makes the whole system work better as a result. Linux is a very good example of this theory. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass to setup and configure for someone who has never done it before, but the end result is a secure, stable OS. You get out what you put in basically.
It wouldn't matter who made the call or when, as long as the money came from Microsoft. If it came directly from BillG himself, then it still wouldn't matter would it? He's the head cheese of Microsoft, and his money comes from Microsoft too, doesn't it?
Well, it depends, if BillG paid out of his own private money, then (legally) there's nothing wrong with this, even though his cash came from MS. Think of it this way, if you get your paycheck and go buy drugs with it, does that mean your company can be prosecuted for drug trafficking? No, because you worked for and earned that money, it's yours.
Jon Stewart has absolutely no say in what commercials are shown, those are all picked by Viacom and the local markets. As for them not mentioning it on the show, yeah, Viacom probably told them not to bring it up. But hey, everyone's got a boss right? I am sure Jon has a mortgage and a family to support just like the rest of us. Don't be so hard on Jon, he really has nothing to do with this.
Now that I got a DVD burner for xmas (thanks honey!) I was thinking about this too. As someone mentioned earlier, the scene with Han and Greedo where Greedo shoots first really pisses me off too. I don't mind the new special effects too much because they can be cool to look at, but by changing that scene they are screwing with the story line. So, when i get the DVD, fuck Lucas, I'll rip the disc, edit the scene back to the way it was in the original, and re-burn it. I'll have to leave the extras and stuff off the disc to make it fit, but I'd still have the SE disc if I wanted to see those things. Just my $0.02.
...However, millions of Americans are currently putting themselves into similar situations by getting deeper and deeper into debt by taking loans to buy luxury items: a new yacht, a larger house, a fancy new car, etc...
But at least with those kinds of debt, you at least have something to show for it (the house, the car, etc..) With this scam, you simply lose the money. At least if you find yourself in great debt, you can sell off the item you bought and cut your losses. Just my $0.02.
Yeah, but I bet you would feel differently about it if you were proven innocent because you were buying hand lotion and copy of Maxim when the crime was being committed.
Probably not, but your toilet would be. :)
The DirecTivo does... no support for the Home Media Option tho

Did I miss a scene in the movie where Jeff Bridges gets pregnant? :)
Can they go to meetings for me and just smile and nod? If so, where do I sign up? :)
I just had this vision of Jobs saying that while grabbing his crotch in a meeting with Real.. LOL :) I got your AAC right here pal!
It's complete crap. What will it take for these overpaid execs to see what their market wants?
I think these guys will fight tooth & nail until the market has completely dried up.

Really? What's your IP? :)
To me the authors are vandals not revolutionaries, and may have ensured WMA becomes the standard
So? The DRM on WMA will probably be broken just as easy.

Yeah, I'll bet that's going to be a real barn burner

Sheesh, why don't you just not go to Slashdot on April 1? It's one day out of the year.

How do you think this would this affect the spread of computer viruses, increase or decrease? (at least the worms anyway)

Sounds to me like they are just trying to outsource some work. Nothing comes from MS with no strings attached :)
