SL is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters.
The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.
Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. Examples of items that were added are Alpine, and OpenAFS.
Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a user wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.
I've never met anyone who has used Ubuntu and who likes Unity, power user, novice, script kiddie...
My wife, a non-technical person, likes Unity, so at least there's one. But I (power user) am with you and the rest of the vocal supermajority that hates it.
"have cancers that are already lethal" --> People that have lethal cancer can be treated nevertheless. --> how do you know if a persons cancer will be lethal or not?
Exactly right. I'm one of those who simply doesn't know whom to believe. It doesn't seem inherently unreasonable to me that the average global temperature could be getting warmer or that humans could be a significant factor. But every time someone starts shouting, "Denier! Denier!" I just stop listening to them.
In fairness, however, the same is true of those who shout "Alarmist! Alarmist!" of which there are also many.
What do you expect them to do, not raise them just so people who aren't their shareholders can keep more money in their pockets? They're not exactly selling anti-retrovirals, if you don't think $1.20 is a good deal, don't rent a DVD from them, no problem.
One simple way to avoid that type of shit from entering the workplace, refuse to hire anyone that has a technical certificate of any kind along with those with a degree from the diploma mills such as ITT Tech and Conservative err Community Colleges. Community Colleges are a fancy way of saying trade school. Employers should only hire the truly educated and those are only from the major Universities.
I work in higher education, and not for a for-profit or a community college. Your belief that graduates from "the major Universities" are somehow better than those from other institutions, especially for something like application development, is hilarious to me.
Let's find people who understand government to run ours.
Those people are called "lobbyists" and they already run the government, because ours is a system where corporate executives and government policy makers cooperate for mutual advantage. And so long as there is a financially rewarding level of political power out there to wield, this will continue to be the arrangement.
Like I said, I like the free stuff too, but let's not play coy here. If you're going to be a pirate, at least admit it.
I'm not a pirate. Pirates steal things, but copyright isn't really property, and copying isn't theft.
(Except for when I load in them up in a torrent client and get free music, movie, TV shows and pr0n, but really, they are useless, I promise!)
Except that not all content is copyrighted, and even when it is there's fair use of copyrighted material. Saying, "It's okay to shut this down because it can be used to infringe on copyright," applies as well to any other means of communication as it does to one that uses.torrent files.
Yes, but according to the media, for profit is ba-a-a-a-a-a-ad. And never mind low cost DETC schools that despite being for profit somehow manage to cost less even than in state tuition. Nothin' to see there, move along....
The interest on many Title IV student loans is paid by the federal government. That's a subsidy, in fact when I log on to the Sallie Mae to check on my loans they're even referred to as such. As for why tuition rates would go down without Title IV, it's because grants and loans are like air going into a tuition bubble. In the same way that houses cost less than they did five years ago because that bubble burst, so too would tuition rates tend to drop if this bubble bursts.
Troll, huh? Hardly. You see, O benighted moderator, it's a reference to the plot of a movie that's coming out next year that some people think is interesting in part because it's being released under a Creative Commons license. Of course, if you'd clicked the link before modding me down, you'd have known that.
We could send Barack Obama. Europeans seem to love him!
So that you can hate her for her freedom.

I like to think that this would more belong in the Onion, but the sad thing is that you're probably right.
Just send it through the dishwasher: http://www.howtogeek.com/65915/how-to-clean-your-filthy-keyboard-in-the-dishwasher-without-ruining-it/
Heresy! It's actually due to a guy who rides a giant chariot across the sky and lives on a mountain in Greece!
There is, and you used it -- it's labeled "Reply to This".
The Americans import their oil from South America and to a lesser extent from Africa. The Europeans and Chinese get Middle eastern oil.
Hey man, this is slashdot. Imaginary wives' opinions only count for (1d20 + 0.2) percent unless they happen to be carrying the Sword of Pandora.
Sorry, I don't make the rules.
No sword, but she's a zumba instructor from the Caribbean who's also in law school. I'm kinda making up for all the rest of you.

Well, you'll find out sooner or later, right?

I'll deal with it just fine by hiring all the perfectly good people that snobs like you overlook.
By the way, make fun of the "mouth breathers" while you can — welding and pipefitting can't get outsourced to India.

That's no satellite, that's the Nazis returning!
Ahh, whoosh on me, then. :-)
My kids go to public schools, but I still know that's trolling. Homeschooled kids aren't unsocialized, that's a ridiculous myth.
What do you think Unity is? If that's not a self-destructive rebellious phase, I don't know what is.
So, in other words, you are not left handed either?
