  2. iPad on Murdoch Says E-Book Prices Will Kill Paper Books · · Score: 1

When the iPad was announced, I thought to myself - there isn't really a use for that.

Later, it occurred to me - if you subscribe to magazines and newspapers, and read them at home a lot - it is actually quite attractive, in an expensive apple solution way... maybe not for me, but for some people, who enjoy those types of publications at home - sure. Could actually be the saviour of magazine and news bulletin styles of things, now I think about it, if enough cool people start subscribing, rather than just reading the articles (that are made available online). Interactive and updated content, plus web usage to help it along... sure, could be good for that.

Of course, Mr Murdoch has the opposite view - it's a destroyer, not an enabler. Oh well... it surely won't be too long before he has to hand over control of News Ltd to someone with at least a tiny bit of forward thinking inside the skull.

  4. Re:Change of Heart for the Bands on Some Bands Still Refuse Music Downloads · · Score: 1

Kyuss did this with their album Sky Valley... or, more accurately, they broke the album into four tracks, three parts of three songs each (and a 'hidden' track at the end that wasn't really hidden and about two seconds long).

If I recall correctly, their stated purpose for doing this was to stop people skipping through the tracks.

Some bastard stole my original copy many years ago, so I bought a new one. It had a full ten tracks... guess it wasn't a popular move.

    I respected it though.

Please believe I'm not trying to be insulting at all - but I just have to say that it always stuns me when I find someone believing in things like miracle cures, in this day and age, without any evidence (and on a tech/science orientated website, no less). I rarely bother to comment on it though, as it's just so wide spread.

As you point out yourself, there are many possible reasons why what looks like a "miracle" to some could occur. A lot of them we don't really understand yet. Why do people need invoke a higher being to explain it all away? Does it provide some level of comfort? It's the only reason I can think of.

IMO, it's a sad indictment of where we stand with scientific thought and progress of the human race. However, you are probably in the majority worldwide, I'll give you that.

I just like to imagine a boardroom meeting of sony (or other big industry music companies) as they suddenly realize through the haze of coke and champagne... MP3 is good enough.

If you are an audiophile, maybe not... but then, you are 0.01 of the music buying public, so they don't give a shit about you anyway.

I rip my MP3's at 256... god knows why, 192 VBR would be fine. But I have a *thing* about audio quality. That being said, why on earth would I go to the bother of re-ripping or moving my (256) files to some fucked up format that sony dreamed up out of their sales department's wet dreams when I can't tell the difference between what I do and a cd??? They must be insane!!!

I almost bought several HD based mp3 players before the ipod came out, but i held off because they looked shitty. I was right. I bought an ipod soon after they came out, cause they fit my needs great. I was right. For another company to come along and get me to replace my (admittedly clicky sounding ipod) they are going to have to do some serious work to convince me they are right. For me. This piece of shite ain't even close.

I'm currently living in the UK for work, and decided to pick up some windows games for my work laptop while I'm here... while browsing through the bargin bin for games that would run on this underpowered machine, I saw (for ten pounds) a re-release of the original doom games - Ultimate Doom, Final Doom and Doom 2 all on one CD.

(NB. - do not do this if you are trying to be productive - it's almost as adictive this time around, espcially in my 3D hardware deprived mood)

What was interesting was that a second CD came with the game with a bunch of Doom 3 promo stuff - and although I haven't checked the site in its entirity, it looks like the whole web site is on this promo CD. So I actually got to see all this stuff a couple of weeks ago... I'd feel special, but it's not that great in content, and I'll just be much happier when I get the actual game going on my machine back home :)

I was searching to see if anyone had mentioned Iain M Banks yet.

What Banks stands out for, IMO, is the best interpretation by far of artificial intelligence I've ever read. And if that isn't enough, a great deal of his work also revolves around how human(ish) people and the AI interact and build their society.

He also deals with the vast scope of the galaxy, and treats it with a great deal of imagination... and he's a pretty twisted dude too :)

I agree with the parent that Excession is the best of his work, but I wouldn't start with it, unless you want to jump right to the best (I think you would lose some of the impact). I'd go through the culture books in order of release (excluding "State of the Art", which is short stories, some of which deal with the culture - if I recall corectly, "Consider Phlebas", " The Player of Games", "Use of Weapons", then "Excession".
