  1. SingingFish? on AOL Buys Video Search Firm · · Score: 1

Why would they buy this company when they already own singingfish.com ? I will have to do some research but maybe someone else knows?

Singingfish is was a Seattle based video search and image search company which was picked up by AOL. Kind of weird that they would be two of the same type of company.

Capture one is a good application, but it was hardly designed with the high-end photo workflow model in mind I think. It was a very good app that the company was using for its high end cameras.

As the need for such an app became clear, they quickly rushed this to market it seems. Compared to a program like Aperture, it's clear that there is a new generation of photography workflow tool coming into its own.

It seems funny to say that Capture One is the end-all-be-all of photography workflow.

What I'm trying to say is, I'm no fan of laywers, but let's give them a little credit here and say that they've come up with a good way to defend this Mei guy. If anything Mei can afford a good lawyer, yay!

So, it's like an episode of Scooby-Doo basically, everyone knows the lights are cars but the local area has used it as sort of fun way of attracting tourists and they even have a festival around the event. See http://www.qsl.net/w5www/marfa.html . So, it's kind of sad that these students went to this amount of trouble to explain away the lights.

I think it's interesting that the local legend has it that the lights have been there before cars and that you hear a tuning fork sound in one ear. Obviously these little details have been added to add the little bit of doubt to keep the charade going and to draw some more money into town.

It's a fun thing... let it go, as I'm sure the people down there will not be accepting of even a scientific study like this.

I was in London last year for a couple of weeks and stumbled into a Virgin store or some mega-chain thing whatever it was. Anyway, lo-and-behold I stumbled on a gold mine of BBC classics on DVD, from Sci Fi to John Clease on Monty Python and Fawlty Towers and various other shows I was interested in. I was jazzed I picked up a basket and started shopping, I was ready to plunk down a huge chunk of change when I realized, oops..they won't play.

I was so dissapointed. What a bummer. What good did this do anyone? The store lost out, I lost out, the manufacturer lost out.

Yes, I can find many of those same DVDs locally here, but you have to understand being in London in a store that had nothing but these great classics , all together, all in front of me, all ready to buy. Ouch, still hurts to think about it.

The "metric" I'm using in this case is the PSP message forum on Sony's own site. There are oodles of newbie messages such as "what's a router" and "how do I configure wifi" posted by people that are obviously otherwise quite adept that using computers.

Further, the other metric I'm using are reports by teachers and administrators in schools that have switched to laptops instead of textbooks. A report on NPR last week touched on the topic that a high school teacher that has switched to all laptops had to spend quite a bit of time teaching students how to administer the laptops, much to his surprise.

I'm not bashing kids and don't call me a crotchety old man, I'm just citing relevant experiences of late.
