Sorry, but I do not have a contract to have to view ads. I't just happens so that many web sites uses ads to support themselves.
I remembeder the time when there was NO ads on the web.
SNR was much higher then - even if many pages was just links to other webpages.

Well, if you are older and have a kid I suggest you give him part credit for the books by naming him co-author. Yhat way it is his life + 70 years - even if he just is a toddler. And if he lives to be a 100 years the time will be 170 years - not bad at all.

Actually then the book will never go out of print. They can simply just use print-on-demands to make sure the books is always available.
And how about electronic books. They never go out of print.
No, what is needed are manadory license fees, so that you first get 20 years of copyrigth. But then you need to prolong it every 5 years and have to pay a small fee. This continues until until the maximum time 70 years have expored. That way many items will fall into public domain after 20 years.
Don't count on chinese oil. They are currently importing oil. And with the current increase in living standards there - chine continue to increase it's fuel use and increase the import.
For me it looks like an obvious effort to promote Windown on Slashdot. The interesting thing is that they all have the same types of messages:
1. Linux GUI sucks Windown are better.
2. Hilarious funny - but still favuoring windows.
3. FUD containing some grains of truth but still containing obvious (to me) false statements about Linux and/or promoting Micosoft.
4. Boys are boys statement regarding the Micosoft trial telling everyone that Mucosoft are only doing what all other are doing and should not be punished.
To me the messages seams to be too alike and too coordinated to be a circumstance. I think it is an coordinated attack on the Slashdot community to promote Microsoft and its products.
Microsoft has 40 billion dollors to play with, are you telling me they can't used the money to debug thier software to without raising prices on thier software?
Actually WW2 was in some ways a continuation of WW1. Which in turn was a continueation of the Bismark wars.
The terms after WW1 opposed upon Germany made the situation in Germany hard and thus they needed to get a strong leader to get the unreasonable terms reversed - which made the way for the nazis and the WW2.
The borderlands between France and Germany has shifted ovwnership several times. WW2 was partly just to take back whe territory Germany lost in WW1.
Well, I got broadband 10Mb for 250 SEK (about $25) with no bandwith charges so I don't care.
Besided I've never bought a PC with MS Windows or MS Word pre-installed.
Have seen ads revently with PCs sold pre-installed with Star Office so I suspect there will not take long until some are sold with Open Office pre-installed.
The reason advertising (and FUD) works is that it said over and over until it becomes so well know so that everybody thinks it's the truth since everybody else says the same.
To counter that the truth has to be said many times.
Also because its a good collection of pro free/open source material.
Actually I think you will find that in the originals terms it probably says that they have the right to change the terms as they see fit and that you have the right to not accept those changes and end your card before the new terms take effect.
Nowhere does it probably stand that you have the right to change the terms.
I wish more people would actually read the small print before signing contracts.
I didn't have the heart to tell him how clueless his page was.
Why not ???
It we never educate the clueless we will have a world of clueless people...
For example people who write fantastic 'expert' 'high-tech' articles of how you could - gasp! - compress images so they are faster to download.
By not helping him he will could spread his 'expert' knowledge to others. In the long run he probably would have been better off by you telling him the truth.
Well, the web page NEVER looks like the original designer would like it to look since I usually prefer to set up my web browser to use my own fonts since I don't want to try and read 6 pixel fonts.
In reality it's impossible to render a webpage the same way for different users.
It's not ever possible to render the web page as a picture and get ot too look the same since the screen resolution and the monitors way of displyining the colors can shift significatly.
So I wish that webb designer stop going after the impossible dream that never can be fullfilled and as their first priority tries to make sure that the web pages WORKS for the visitors - a goal that is possible to reach.
If the web then also looks reasonable good is of cource nice - but should not be done so that it stops visitors to be able to view the web site.
You are nitpicking. Just because something in itself is small does not mean it can't exist an entity that is small compared to the other entities who by themselves are small, it just so happens that this one is small compared to the rest.
Thus "mighty small trickle" is correct since a "mighty trickle" aren't really right in this context.
(I donät blaim those that have to read this 5 times to understand it.)
ObOnTopic: In my opiion there must exist a way so that the copyright holders get paid for producing their copyrighted material. The digital revolution has made it so inexpensive to copy the material that the current established way to ensure payment now is breaking down. The recording industry is using the legal system to try and maintain the current payments structure since they see that it will otherwise undermine the record industry company bosses power base and revenue and they strive to maintain their power and profit.
I think this situation will continue to be problematic until a new way of paying the creative music people will emerge.

Yes, you are not alone. I've also seen it.

Well, the facts speak for themselves.
Sorry doesn't work since I never view HTML emails.
They are a huge security risk.
Well, ever heard of Linux. Several if not all of these player in that platform does not contain spyware.

This has interestong implications since it means that if a company blatantly lies - one can sue it for that!
Have you heard of FUD ?
I wonder how much I can make by surfing to the Microsoft webpage and sue them for lies about
Linux and GPL.

For example, most of quantum theory can be ignored when modelling a bridge, which simplifies things a bit.
lol. Just a bit?
Well maybe two bits.
Alternate and faster solution:
Ditch MS Word and use Open Office and store
the files in its smaller and better format.
Before Microsoft there was I.B.M.
Here are some organisations to join:
EF Sweden www.efs.se
EF Norway www.efn.no
EF Finland www.effi.org
Well, its the american way
This is no different than Ford making a car.
If Ford can be sued for making bad cars so can a softeare manufacturer be sued for making buggy software.
It's nothing strange or magical about that.
Actually there are insurance companies that charge MORE if you have MS product than if you use UNIX/Linux.
However since so few companies actually has that insurance it hasn't yet influenced the marketplace.
It seams that MS products are more problematic than open source/free software.

Yes its been discussed before - but it has been updated since that - so it contains some new info...

Actually since Apple are paying for people to display the ad I don't think that they will be very unhappy about people diplaying it for free!
