  1. Is it really THAT hard? on Should Aunt Tillie Build Her Own Kernels? · · Score: 1

Kernel compiling is a rather easy task. Most books are only taking 2 chapters for it and not more is needed. When you have a GUI with checkboxes and stuff it wont get any easier because if you dont know about your hardware the gui cant help at all.

I think using the console is fine in that case, people can use the custom built kernels that come with thei distro anyway...

although I am personally rather new to Linux and Samba I found it extremely easy to setup, reliable in everyday work, and incredible stable.
I use it in our Backyard-Network here in Munich, where a friend/neighbour and I share a single DSL Connection.
It runs really fast, even on my old CF-41 Notebook, and serves many Simpsons, Futurama or Buffy Episodes every day...now for nearly 100 days...

    Happy Birthday Samba!!!

just a few days ago i was discussing digital-vcrs with a friend and i was stating that i wouldn't buy a device that lacks a dvd/mp3 player.

Seems like they finally got it. Sad thing that i live in germany, though. I wonder when we will see this thing over here, if ever.

But basically that's the idea, a central device, only drawback is the 80gig hd. I bet it's full real soon. Wouldn't it be great to have the option to add more disks or store stuff on the family server? But then again, why don't i just stick with my pc? It all comes down to that point in the end.

    Neat machine anyways...

I doubt that. There is a chance that millions of users will fall for that stupid system as long as bertelsmann convinces Microsoft to ship it as the default filesharing tool (or mediaplayer whatever they call it) in their next OS Version.

I experience stuff like that in my everyday work, watching people use all the default tools MS ships. Why is FTP something most Windows Users never heard of? Because there is no big FTP Button on their default desktop installation.

I promise you if Bertelsmann manages to get that thing in the next Windows Version it will become terribly popular. And with Napster beeing the name they heard of Kazza/Morpheus and all the others will be in serious trouble as soon as they're being sued. Just as Napster was. Or would you really have imagined that noone will know Netscape in 2002, back in 1996?

    Just my theory...

Patrick has been doing a wonderful work during the last years and why not help him keeping one of the first (and IMHO best) Linux Distributions up and running?

there are these Studentappartements over here in Munich/Germany. It is sooo great, they are a bit out of the city and every room has their own Lan-Connection (I think the Uplink is a shared T1 as well). Whats more theres a cigarette machine in the lobby and a 24/7 Store in every building. In the basement there are different kinds of pubs, cafes and partyrooms, it is so great that i almost wish i would study something. People really live together in there, they learn, eat, hack, and party together...

Then again, I live in a small backyard building in munich and we got DSL a few months ago and wiring the old House was a blast and our small Lan is really a lot of fun ever since. Even better, a coworker of mine just wired his own house he was building. He also included a dedicated Serverroom...cost him a bit though ;-)

Of course equipping EVERY PC in your flat with a radio AND a Monitor you could get this thing to work. Of course you would have to assign a dedicated Frequency to every machine.
But then again, you sure would need some nice errorcorrection since the quality wont be too good. And that could bring your transferrates down...in fact, i guess you could do better using two walkietalkies instead...;-)

Nice idea though, i was thinking about sth. like that for some time. Like streaming data via radio at certain times, but then again...i could just use a decent broadband connection to do the same thing two way...
