This IMHO will be the beginning of a new golden age of hardware hacking. The last time things were somewhat like this was the age of TTL chips in "home" computers in the early to mid 80s. It was much easier to build your own peripherals, joysticks, speech synthesisers (anyone remember the 8-bit SPO256 AL2 chip sold at Radio Shack?) Building your own boards were much more common than today. Widespread use of surface mount boards and chips started to make design of your own board difficult for many hobbiests. Now it will be easy to do this again, and hardware hacking is going to take off.

We even tried installing ME on it, but Sony has no drivers for his laptop with ME, and has stated they had no intentions of producing drivers for users with *older* VAIOs to upgrade to newer OSes.

Sonys support line boasted a broken link so now I understood his tremendous frustration level. So armed with a boatload of documentation on this issue, I went with him to Best Buy, and they let him exchange his VAIO for other hardware matching the price of the laptop. The magic words that resonated with Best Buys manager where: "Hey man he just wants to play games on his laptop". So I helped him pick out a HP desktop (No Compaqs or eMachines nosirreebob), and a boatload of hardware, all equalling the price of that crappy laptop.

I have read a couple articles in the past about China, Linux and Microsoft.

I am of the opinion the key issue here is about control. Microsoft as we all know, basically dictates to the world at large, OK this is the how it is going to be done, so do what we say and everyone will be happy. Planned obsolescence, hidden APIs, "embrace and extinguish", along with shoddy documentation has historically meant that Microsoft always retained the upper hand.

What Linux has done, which before now your only choices were expensive Macs, and a fragmented Unix market, gave people a viable option, and in control of their own computing destiny.

Dont want a browser icon on your desktop? Use Linux. Installing a SQL Server that doesn't require a web browser? Use Linux. Don't want to subscribe to .Net or decipher CAL licensing? Use Linux. Don't want your expensive office software to suddenly become obsolete every two years at Microsofts whim? Use Linux.

These are the real reasons that China doesn't like MS. Microsoft and China are like two control freaks trying to establish a relationship.

  13. ZDNET reviews. on ZDNet Reviews KOffice · · Score: 1

I have often noticed ZDNET prefers "dumbed down" software features.

Their reviews for Microsoft Windows, especially the XP interface were glowing. They also tend to compare Microsoft products against older versions of the same product (especially OS'es).

So this means that for "innovated products" *snicker* like XP, comparisons with Win 2k or Millenium, make it sound totally awesome. Experience tells *us* a different story, namely XP is a *little* more stable but slower, but with closed and proprietary half completed garbage (XP firewalls and Media as an example).

My opinion is that they for the most part cow-tow to Microsoft for dollars and users.

A typical example, direct from ZDNets site:
XP has a radical new look, and Microsoft is likely to take a few hits from purists who think it looks either dumbed-down or too Mac-like. But after living with it for a while, we feel it is more pleasing aesthetically and more functional, once you get used to it. Still if you just can't stand it, you can always revert to the classic Windows interface.

    Another example:
Setting up a network has never been easier, thanks to XP's Network Setup Wizard, which spells out, auto-configures and diagrams exactly how to create common network scenarios, such as a gateway machine for your in-house network. This feature alone may be worth the price of admission.

    2. Most usually dont know how to use RPM let alone recompile a kernel, KDE or Gnome version, etc.
    3. Bragging/Newest toy factor. Talking to friends about having "newest" KDE etc. (even though most of us know that rarely happens :) )
    4. Last but not least, convenience/bandwidth. This is the reason even season linux veterans buy distros semi-regularly

It is kind of sad in a way that the newest GUI's for Linux are so good. I have talked to 3 different people in the last month or so that use linux alot but really have little or no inkling "what lies under the hood". I made the mistake of *loving* programming, using new tools, cranking out quality stuff. AKA Making people look bad, because they were/are dumb, lazy freeloaders. Not being from the area (central Kentucky) didn't help either, and unless you act like a pretentious yuppie--you just wont fit in (I didnt). Just getting these slope headed drones to use new tools and comment code was a total royal pain in the ass. I basically *took over* the project manager by getting him and others to get off their ass and at least pretend they wanted to be there, (who wants to clean up after people constantly?).
