  1. Re:Couldn't disagree more... on LotR Takes Top Spot on IMDB · · Score: 2

My guess for Sauron being there was that he strikes me as the kind of vindictive evil bastard that would rather enjoy coming out to smash the last resisting Ring bearers (e.g. Elrond, who we see on the front line) flying with those rather impressive powers. Perhaps only a Ring bearer stands a proper chance against another so he is bringing out the big guns to finish the job, or perhaps he got cocky. Either way its in the nature of cinematic warriors to want to kill the opposition leaders themself.

Wonderful touch with the air-rush flattening everyone one the battlefield, anyway.

    For what its worth:

    1) you could probably get this working with the free data files in the demo version if you try

    2) as you'll discover if you give the demo a quick go, Quake II is far more bright and colourful than the first one was; the engine now includes coloured lighting effects and was written at a time when 3D cards were starting to become popular, so making the game look good on a 256-colour display was not the only concern.

Some of my all time favorite games are great because they move 'right'. Can you imagine playing Spindizzy or Marble Madness with crap physics? I can, on a dire MM ripoff. It was frankly painful. The unexpected coolness that can result from engines that do things properly is very nice - although they cheated on the amount of kickback to do it, rocket jumping would never exist if they hadn't used impulses and momentum to control movement rather than old style 'move forward if the player pushes forward' arcade method.

  6. Re:Well if panasonic is like sony... on 'Q' Plays US GameCube Games · · Score: 1

This story here is the one you're looking for. The critical difference here is that the Nintendo mod, unlike the Sony one, just opens the machine up to play US games as well as Japan ones. Sony seems to worry a lot more about imports, but mainly worries about the fact that Sony mods also let you play pirate games.

  7. Re:Ahhh Shut The Hell Up Already on Sony vs Modchips · · Score: 1
Those £20 from any Virgin or HMV cards do the job fine for DVD playback, but they don't work for games; the PS2 region control deliberately doesn't use the DVD region system, as that is so easily hacked.

Nintendo, on the other hand have hardly made it difficult to do region mods- National Console Support are a company dedicated to helping you import console stuff, and they will sell you a Japanese Cube pre-modded to also play US games very reasonably - a friend of mine has one from them and its a very professional job.

Let me guess. You're American, aren't you?

Firstly, you shouldn't be able to use your legal muscle to kill a company unless its actually breaking the law, I don't care how much effort your programming team put in.

Secondly, I only want a region chip because its cheaper to get one than it is to import the whole console. Believe me, if it was an either or situation without any cost or hassle implications I don't think a single person would buy the UK version of the PS2. I haven't got one at all, because these mods aren't known for their relibility, but I only want to play NTSC games, not the piece of junk PAL conversions we are given. I want to watch my collection of hundreds of (all legally bought) DVDs from around the world. I know a grand total of no people who have a DVD player incapable of playing US titles, and they don't see why it shouldn't be the same for games.

If you really feel what you're saying then just call anyone who bought a PS2 for Metal Gear Solid 2 an idiot - clearly thats how you feel about European gamers who want to do the same.

I'm not saying that if this became a major news story for some reason that Microsoft's well-documented attitude to open source wouldn't lead to them being in a bad mood at him, but right now all he has effectively done is set up a website saying "Look, I've ported this popular game (which isn't GPL, but I can get the source to) to the devkit, and it was much easier to work with as a developer than Sony's PS2 devkit is." Can you see them getting that upset about it?

In any case, the source for Quake is also available, and thats even under a GPL variant, but I can't see Microsoft telling Carmack and co. where to stick it if id want to do a version of Doom 3 for the XBox.

There was hardly any Windows in the Dreamcast at all; programmers could _choose_ to put a version of WinCE on the disc, if that is how they wanted to put a middleware on their dealings with the hardware, but others bypassed it completely and either wrote or bought a different solution.

As for the failing X-Boxes, thats been traced to the Halo demo (and possibly others) not correctly recompiling the code for the non-devkit boxes, and so failing when a debug dll call was made (the debug dlls not being on the disc). Bungie fixed it with a quick recompile, and I'd be surprised if the final releases have slipped through QA with this problem. Also, the fancy cabinet design has been blamed for letting some of them overheat, apparently.
