Many of the "mp3" players have upgradable firmware and will support ogg in the near future.
I haven't seen this happening at all. I have a AVC Soul Player with upgradeable firmware, and while a few updates have been released, AFAIK there is still no Ogg support. I've had the player over a year now, I'd say that's plenty of time to write a codec if they were so inclined. I'm also pretty sure the player has a generic DSP, as it can play WMA as well as MP3.
Most of the time, I only play music on my computer, so I want to use the format that is better compression/sounding for me. I don't care about the guy who wants to copy it from me over Gnutella. He can get the ogg plugin if he wants my music.
Playing Ogg on computers is really a non-issue, even mainstream players (like Winamp) have official Ogg plugins. On the other hand, the only mobile device I've ever seen that supports Ogg is the Iomega HipZip.
There's really only one reason: hardware support. I can take my MP3s virtually anywhere and be able to play them, whether it's a computer, a CD player a flash player or something else, it's almost universally supported on digital audio gadgets. I like Ogg, I'd say at the [high] bitrates I encode at it's as good if not better than MP3, but it just doesn't have the hardware support to make encoding for it worth my while, it's more time-effective for me just to rip to MP3 directly.
from the stare-into-the-abyss dept. MEEPT! wrote in to report that the famous troll site goatse.cx has been shut down under the Digital Millenium Copyright Act by a gay linux industry trade group called the Alternative Network OS and Gay Anus Penetration Enthusiasts. Michael S, an ANOSGAPE spokesman, was quoted as saying "goatse.cx has made a mockery of the anal fisting industry, and left themselves spread wide open to litigaytion. We hope this anal action will send a clear message to this "trolling" community that wide-open man-holes are not a laughing matter." The goatse.cx webmasters were optimistic, however, stating that the graven image, now sacred to trolls and crapflooders everywhere, was found in the pubic domain and was in no way infringing on any GAPE copyright. Similar sites such as Comp-u-geek and "Hey everybody, I'm looking at gay porno!" were unaffected.
And what if you couldn't take the BMW on most of the roads in the world?
That analogy is rather unclear, but I assume you're talking about software support here. Nowdays, poor software support on MacOS is a myth.
OSX can run software for OSX, OS<X, *nix, and, with VirtualPC, Windows. I'd say that macs have the best software support out there, certainly better than Windows or freenix.
The engineering that Apple seems to do seems to be in how to make their computers weird shapes [...]
At least Apple hardware doesn't have all the obselete crap that PC's are just now starting to phase out. Hell, the PC boot firmware hasn't been reworked (or, better, standardized) in something like 15 or 20 years. Yet, unbelieveably, it's *still* not smart enough to ignore a non-bootable floppy in the drive.
While the Military-grade cybernetic sack sounds like an ideal nut transportation device, is it still suitable for teabagging?
Would it cause abrasions on the teabaggee's forehead or tongue? Would the moist environment of say, a mouth, have any effect on the performance of the sack, such as causing it to short out and shock the teabaggee, or worse, the sack's owner?
I leave it up to Slashdot to determine what those products could be, if there is such a product;-)
Win2k and higher aren't really bad for client boxes, as most of the stability and speed problems 9x/NT had have been resolved[1]. Security is still piss-poor by default, but I wouldn't say it's any worse (not counting Lookout Express, anyways) than say, a default RedHat install[2].
Visual Studio is also a pretty nifty, if expensive, app, especally with add-ons like Visual Perl.
While I dislike their tactics, ruthlessness, and extraordinarily annoying execs, to say that MS doesn't currently produce any decent software is, IMO, incorrect.
C-X C-S [1] 2k definately still has annoyances, but formerly common problems like BSODs and hard lockups are pretty rare. I've been using 2k (or it's variants) for a year or two now and have only seen like 2 or 3 BSODs, all caused by balky hardware. [2] The biggest problem with default linux installs, IMO, is people have a false sense of security ("Oh, it's linux. It's secure.") and don't even bother checking for patches or doing even basic security evaluation...with win, tho, even n00b admins know it's full of holes, and treat it accordingly.
Not really, you still need W2k Server[1] licenses. I guess you could say it's free if you're already a W2k shop, but otherwise, the more accurate term would be "bundled".
I think QT/Darwin is still definately the cheapest software option, even including the $500-odd dollars for Sorensen and QT Pro.
C-X C-S [1] I suppose you could run a small streaming server on W2k Pro, but I think it's server capability is limited to like 10 connections.
What's there for a UNIX hacker not to love? OSX just rocks. From the BSD-ish UNIX underneath, to the amazing display layer and NextStep app framework, to the commercial app support (can you say "Photoshop"[1]?) it's just super cool.
There's even source for the core OS for you open source freaks.
About the only thing that could be considered a disadvantage is that it only runs on Mac hardware. (Which, granted, is a lot nicer and more elegant than PC hardware, but that doesn't help those of us that that have tons of PC hardware lying around.)
C-X C-S [1] I'll reiterate once more: Gimp is nice, but doesn't come close to Photoshop.

Netscape 4.x is NOT crap. It's fast as hell,
and it renders pages that were designed with a clue very well.
That's the funniest thing I've read all week.

if you want to use an Alpha or Sun box as an encode server
If you can afford a Alpha or Sun encoding setup, I really doubt you'd have any problem with
affording a sub-$1000 PC to use as a dedicated QT encoder.

Changing the FS would really only affect the way the data is stored on the drive, the AppFS interface should be abstracted by the OS.

Just because you don't use a certain capability (like CMYK), doesn't mean I don't either.
