    last time i checked, a graphics card will get about 100x more Flops than a similarly priced CPU, give or take an order of magnitude (hey, im an astrophycist, order of magnitude is good enough)

    unfortuantely, they often have -1 weeks of sales when there arent illegal copies circulating. I do sometimes pirate games, but i try to restrain from doing it when the game is young, e.g when a sequal has come out, i consider the original fair game. I know it doesnt really make a difference if i pirate it now or a year down the line, but it sits a bit better with me...

    if you look at the graph in TFA, there appears to be a third small cluster in the region of the 'A' marker, which is people who start emailing early evening, and finish late at night, which i guess is those who use their e-mail accounts at home after work

    there is not much info about the email accounts montiored. Im guessing the day labourors are those who use their account just for work, with a sperate for personal stuff, and the emailaholics are those with one universal address. The subgroup i pointed out could then represent the personal accounts for the day labourors

    when you are considering taking on a masters/Ph.D/etc, its not really about money. Its about you, how much you are enjoying academic life, and how far you want to pursue it. if the only reason you are considering postgraduate courses is that it might increase your employability, then you shouldnt be considering them.

    hello troll, your inability to understand mathematics does not mean it has no real world application. her little project may well have been able to provide the basis for some ecomonic or social model, or may proove vital in unlocking the bit of physics that enables the next revolution in technology. Besides all these very important uses that skip the average joe, mathematics is often elegant and beautiful, and may be considered a form of art by some people

    There is no denying that that is true. However to have an algorithm that helped you could take it from those 5 mins to (nearly) 5 seconds. The human mind is pretty damn good at filtering out information we dont need, think about how much sensory stimulation we recieve all the time, and how we manage to completely ignore most of it, and just focus on the sound/sight/etc that we are actually interested in. If we were able to figure out the algoritm in our mind, or anything close to it, im sure it would provide a mini revolution in search engines.

    Yes theres alot of information on the internet, its easy and fast to find it. But its also easy and fast to find a great deal of crap on the internet that isnt actually of any use to you. Filtering the wheat from the chaff can often take as much or more effort as finding the information in the first place. How many times have you had to re-word your search phrase, try several search results, and use ctrl-f to actually select the usefull information from all the extra crap.

    last time i checked, terrorists are known to use channels that are also used by a large portion of the public, so bringing them down doesnt sound good. And to go fully (especially publicly) offensive against any nations sounds like a very good way to start a war, even if a cold one.

    i dont buy that. in the uk the fastest provider is probably virgin who offer a 50Mbps connection, that is only 1.5Mbps up. Once you consider the requirements to leave a connection up long enugh, and for it to be realiable long enough to transfer, say, the 4.5GB of a DVD, its still easier to transfer it on a DVD, and we are still far far from 500GB being reasonable over current internet speed, even over a 100Mbps LAN it would take helava time

    As an optical drive, i find it very hard to imagine that it will be capable of having the latency of flash drives, which is what makes them fast.

    if it's data integrity IS comparable to that od CDs and DVDs, then its not really suitable for archiving. As an asside, even if it does cost 10c/GB, how much is it going to cost for the writer?

    but how long before a scared poorly trained sailor has emptied that clip? whereas a watercannon and LRAD wont run out of ammunition, and are probably a bit easier to aim
