I am a netadmin for an ISP, and I can agree, spam is really just a horrible thing. I get about 70 spams per day per box. When I look at all the things we need to combat on a continuing basis, I feel sad.
Then I think to myself, "this isn't working. there needs to be a fundamental change to how we receive email."
And the first thing that pops into my mind, is white list email. Well, there goes 100% of the spam problem, unless you have sleazy friends.
What happens when someone not on your list sends you an email that you actually need to get? *sigh* It then falls back to us fighting the loosing battle.
The real question is one of why people who do routine crap all the time get paid big bucks just because they're doctors, lawyers, or accountants?
Cause of the accountability. We pay a doctor 200 bucks an hour cause he's brave enough to crack someone's head open and tinker with their brains. Or keep them out of jail. Or balance all the financial numbers of a company. Not a lot of people feel like that kind of accountability. Or maybe they do, but fortunately the high level of intelligence needed to do these things (no lawyer jokes) keeps Joe Schmoe and his pair of channel locks out of my cerbral cortex.
It is, but it isnt. I mean I've got... about 16k html files on my one computer. 2 grand to search through them seems like a lot. Then again I'm just a dumb kid with a lot of junk. To a company in the business of information, thats prolly a pretty good deal. Boy, I wish I could make up my mind.
i'm getting sick of hearing arnold getting dumped on. sure hes getting older, but we have the term "middle aged" not only to point out that they arent young anymore, but also that they arent old. and so i propose this- let's just assume you're "young", 20 to 30 years old: if you can say that arnold is getting old and loosing what he's got AND THEN you yourself can honestly say you're in better shape as the 20 to 30 year old you are then he is at his age, then maybe its ok for you to dump on him. i bet not many of us would earn that right!
look on their site. "you can get on our do not call list. up to 16 weeks later you may notice a decrease in phone calls. its five dollars to sign up." is this thing legit? if i were to actually sign up, how do i know i didnt just activiate a "this phone number is valid, spam it" function? (at the isp i work at we always tell our customers not to reply to spam emails for the same type or reason). the five dollars thing is the biggest insult of all. "i'll stop beating your shoulder in every morning for your milk money". why should i believe anything they say? they seem like big giant weasels. ick. ick, ick.
doesnt the root server RFC say that there must always be three times the current estimated usage (that is if 2/3 of the root servers went down the internet would still server DNS)?
i wonder if, when a redhat employee reads that, if they feel like they should get a piece of that pie.. or if they all genuinely think "yay, good for them!" i mean 120,000 copies is quite a shot in the arm. open source rules but this must make some people jealous. maybe its just commercialism's power of me:-D
Anyone want to bet on how long it will be before we have to establish some sort of clean-up effort in space?
how long? i'd guess now is an excellent time to start thinking about it. I read there is quite a problem already. But like most things, if mankind can figure a way out of it, or better, around it in this instance, I'm sure we will. Then some day something BIG will crash up there, and then all of a sudden people will do something about it (a la airport security)
If I lost my IP every five days... *shudder* Ah well, that's what 15 minute dns timeouts are for.
I'd like to see a comparison list of all the different AT&T coverage across the country- bandwidth caps and port blocks. I bet its all different. Right now the only think being blocked on mine is 25. They had 80 and 443 off for a while but they let those two back... and I was amazed.
has anyone seen the new version of this movie? i read something that said that it wasnt really complete when they released it in the 80s, and that with these new effects (and some new scenes maybe? i havent seen it) that the movie is much closer to... "good".
Finally.. we had to wait til the 10th movie to finally arrive at the one with the Romulans. They've been saving them as a plot for... forever. And, its an even numbered flick, so its probably inevitable that this movie is going to be very, very good.
"Captain Picard and Commander Data. Oh, and those other guys too."
I'd invite my co-worker friends over on the weekends when I feel like hanging out, but they dont seem to care about checking their work email on the weekends! I know, I can't figure it out either.
3.. maybe he's conventional, straight forward
4.. wants to have some fun with it
5.. wants to make linux more well know, expand it
6.. slow and steady
7.. get linux into the cracks and take market share from the inside out?
8.. hehe consume the carion of dead OS projects and add it to Linux's own

i love how i got modded twice as redundant with a first post :-D that's logic, that.
I used to feel like only people who know what they're doing should be able to build their own kernels... i was a young and cocky kid, too.

do they need to put a couple sattelites around the moon to bounce the info back to earth?

there's already a street fighter versus SNK characters game out. maybe i'm in a time warp right now though.
Insurrection was bad, but, it was funny quite a bit... I think it ranked about as humerous as the 4th one did. I like how they mix it up.

wait so was this like, just on then? the website said sun/mon at 8. did we all miss out?
China sucks. I feel bad for the people that live there. How come they dont revolt? If the USA had that happen, we'd all start killing each other.
