I agree, this guy wants to piece together a system of at best 'as is' for warranty, put it into public space where real emergency announcements being delivered means someone lives versus death if the system decides it could only run for 87 days (82 more days than tested in a back server room for a week) and dies on the 88th day when the tornado decides to visit and no one can be warned to get to a shelter. Just what I expect when I lay out money to go for a ride, that free is driving. Even the mouse ears would not do this
More and more earth citizens are choosing sex partners than mating partners. People are having more sex but less children. Look at Japan, they do not have a sustainable birthrate. Then you have religions that force their people to have more babies so they become the majority only so their religious practices can be protected.
If the Soviet Union was not pushing the US into space we would never of gotten there by now. All the large military contractors were also part the the moon race and they all benefited greatly by the US citizens thinking it was national pride to make it to the moon before the Soviet Union (oh and gave great amounts of money to make it happen). Now there is no great threat to get the US citizens all worked up about so it is hard for Joe or Jane politician to keep money in real science. I say we need to stage a war in outer space so that we can start spending our money on our future. Pretty soon someone will figure out how to blow the earth up so the sooner the better!
Long distance observations are becoming more and more precise but the chances of finding evidence of intelligent life is very slim. We have been listening for radio waves from outer space for about 60 years when AT&T was experimenting with microwave technology. That is a very small amount of time compared to the billions of years the Earth has been in the habitable zone of our solar system.
We are expecting another world to be transmitting at a power level for us on Earth to hear it. As our own human species matures on Earth our actual transmitted radio waves have been getting less powerful as we both perfect radio transmission and move away from radio transmission to fiber optic and other terrestrial types of communicating. Probably our highest powered transmissions into outer space was when we exploded Atomic bombs above ground and this was for maybe 30 or 40 years total. The chances that some other planet was listening during that time would be more astronomical than there being life on other planets outside of our solar system. And, there was no intelligence in the explosions for another planet to believe it was from intelligent life. The white noise of our universe that AT&T first heard 60 years ago is from billions and billions of hugely powerful star events that would easily wipe out all life on earth if we were just a few light years away from the smallest of these events.
So thinking that we will be able to hear evidence of life outside our solar system by listening to radio waves that make it to earth is a little far fetched though not impossible. I don't think we should stop for there might be some form of galactic space travelers that are purposely transmitting to earth a welcome message or such though if they have the technology to do so I don't think the human species will be able to understand it yet.
But, I think we as a species needs to accept the fact that space travel is the only way we will preserve our human race. This earth is doomed as our star has a limited life span. I know it may be millions or billions of years before the sun eliminates life on earth but it will happen. The sooner we accept this the sooner we will be ready to make the leap into outer space, that or die off as the sun dies off.
I agree with all the posters here that have seen where America is going. It is no longer a multi party democracy. When was the last time Americans had any control of important legislation? Where was the vote on the Health Care Plan that Obama pushed through with his majority vote?
This country no longer is controlled by the citizens. At least at my state level I can vote on certain state initiatives but I did not get a chance to vote on the Health Care Plan and the Health Care Plan will wind up costing me more than any state initiative. Just as Bush was given the green light for going to war from the big defense industry, Obama was given the green light from the health insurance industry, who by the way the health insurance industry will gain the most as the 30 million or so people that don't want insurance or was just managing to put food on the table for their family instead of paying high insurance rates will now be forced to pay high insurance rates and let their family die of starvation.
Obama did not get the chance to design the right health care system for the right one would limit the public health insurance options. There was billions of dollars spent behind doors that we voting Americans will never see. The people in control will never show themselves. They hide behind their money and corporations getting richer and richer all the while our jobs are going overseas, our gas is getting more expensive and the security of our families is going away.
And the companies considering this are already looking to get or keep tax breaks under the stimulus program. What difference to a CEO see between a new face on a robot or a human? I bet they are already scheming with American robot manufacturers to get a tax break for buying a US made robot instead of an import.
So if the office girl/boy is going to be replaced by the office robot what is top management supposed to do when they need oral sex? I hope the robot builders are taking this into consideration. And how are all the cubies supposed to increase their feeling of superiority it they can not pickup the office girl/boy for a cheap fling?
And the winners are: Governments and businesses

All these skiddies are doing is providing fodder to the politicians to enforce more internet control. The governments will get more in bed with every internet hub and access point in their respective countries to monitor all traffic and block encrypted traffic (that they don't have the keys for) and traffic that looks like a hacking or DDoS attack. We will all be paying higher taxes and higher access charges to use what was the open internet. Don't get me wrong, I think the release of these docs is warranted but I don't think the hacking going on right now is doing anyone any good. What good is this going to do for internet users? And this is the problem, the juveniles doing what they think is hacking is just making things worse for the one thing they rely upon, open access.
So the west coast of Florida is having vacations cancelled because of the oil and now with the release of 50-60,000 confused turtles attracting sharks in a feeding frenzy now the east coast of Florida will suffer as the vacation are cancelled there also.
I agree with this Anonymous Coward that the radio controls for the actual communications are firewalled from any app writter.
What I don't understand is why someone has not come out with a sidekick to the cellphone that runs on a compact linux box. I mean there are linux servers that are no bigger then an ac outlet, why not continue the idea and create apps on this sidekick that only use the bandwidth of the cellphone through a USB or bluetooth connection. I could see many different apps running on this sidekick with a IPod like touch screen that the carriers would not be able to control. The sidekick would be another thing to carry, but it would bypass this app approval from the cell phone carrier.
But, I think every carrier is actively monitoring their data band to ensure apps are not running that conflict with their pay apps. Look at what problems google has had with offering voice in the data band of a cell phone. I get unlimited data from my carrier for less then unlimited voice plans. I can do conference calls and transfers and other features with the data side that the carrier charges for in the voice band.
NASA's mistake in sending the last rovers to Mars was not to bring some gold, raw diamonds and black gold to seed the surface and report these as discoveries on the planetâ(TM)s surface. You would have De Beers, Mobile and a dozen other companies spending their profits from extorting us, their loyal customers, for a good cause this time. The American tax payer would not have to spend a dime to support the new space frontier
As if the high intensity LEDs and Laser that can blind the approaching drivers is not enough, now you are providing many brazen bicyclists a fake lane to think they are safe? There is a reason for bike lanes in high traffic zones, to keep them safe because they never win a battle with a car. Wait for the lanes!
NSA has the computing power to monitor all incoming threats to the US that deals with anything electronic or electrical signal and other techniques used. They can not legally use these techniques looking into the US, if you believe the television and news papers. Now, I can see how many/.'s will have their panties riding their ass when a new agency can legally look at what happens on the wires inside the US. They will probably find that many of the robots that are hitting US public IP space everyday from overseas locations are being developed and controlled (and even sold) by people here in the US. The US is almost completely dependent on the internet in one way or another and I can fully understand the need for a new command to monitor and react to these increasing threats to it's traffic on the inside of the US borders. For those that think it would be a wonderful day when the internet shuts down and they can walk down the street to buy a pizza, this would last about a day, then all the stores and restaurants would shut down because they could not resupply, get trucks on the road if they could get their orders in, or even pay their people so they keep showing up for work. What a wonderful world that would be...
When I was in college in the early 80s we built inductive loops to draw power from the local radio station. We drew enough power to light an incandescent bulb. The only problem was the radio station had remote power meters across their broadcast footprint, and we dropped their power levels significantly for the station to call the college. The funny thing was the college knew exactly what professor to call for this was done repeatedly through the semesters, and the radio station could get a pretty good reading on where the actual drop was coming from per their power readings.
The major research being conducted into advancing technology is not to better humanity but to make better the people investing in said advances to get richer. Yes, there is trickle down benefits to all people as this happens, but if a company like IBM did not research/develop adding machines so they could make more money to sell them, one could ague that the modern computer would never have been developed. This can be traced back to the invention of the abacus.
There have only been a few discoveries that are the core of modern technologies. Someone invented a way to domesticate animals for the better of people. Someone discovered electricity, and it was only the research into using electricity that has lead to the modern day computer. The computer can be seen as entertaining, but the real use of computers is for the research/application of creating more wealth, if you break it down into where most of the computer cycles go to, I think the majority is for making more wealth. This is not a bad thing, for it does trickle down, but when you have companies using computer programs to figure out how to increase profits with the leaders of these companies blindly following the computers output. Look at the Wall Street variables that went into affect that has changed the world forever, just because a computer program said it would be better. Ask the people who lost their lifetime investments, do you think the computer program even cared about being wrong?
Look at the steam engine. This brought great improvements to modern people. The steam engine lead to the internal combustion engine which provided even more improvements to modern people. But, if these inventions did not offer the wealthy to get wealthier, they would never have been applied. For an example, look at the nuclear age many visionaries thought we would be living today. Yes, a couple of A bombs did unimaginable destruction, but what happened to all the low cost power we were supposed to have. Splitting the atom was and still is a great invention/discovery, but, it has been held back mainly from the wealthy energy companies mass marketing/political investing to keep mass acceptance from ever happening. It is amazing that last year when the cost of oil was north of $100 per barrel, there was more talk of nuclear energy, and now the cost of oil has dropped to where the nuclear energy does not even make a minor post, even though the new nuclear plants are almost impossible to melt down.
Look at the fall of the rail shipping system. If the railroads where not allowed to be bought out by the larger trucking companies, you would have only regional trucking from the nearest railhead to customer, versus cross country truck shipping. How much oil, pollution and road accidents/wear and tear could we eliminate by using rail lines again for what there were originally designed for?
All of this leads to where our futures lead. For the residents of this earth to fully realize discoveries/inventions, the people of this earth need to demand accountability of the uses of said advances. This will never happen with the rich getting richer. I don't care about who has what toys, but if these companies use these advances to make me work harder or lay me off when the computer model says the time is right, even when these companies are making more profit than ever imagined even 100 years ago, where are we as a civilization?
Having lived through the early Apple, Atari, Amiga, TRS80 and various other early Personal Computer formats, only MS was able to get the combination correct to be in the leader spot now. I am not saying anything about the methods for getting there, but MS made the right decisions to get there. The Atari and Amiga and TRS80s all fell down either trying to be the leader or doing a bad job of following. At least Apple has been able to come back from some bad decisions in their past to garnish the market share they currently have.
I am more than willing to support smarter teachers in the classroom, including paying higher taxes for higher pay for these teachers. Are you willing to put your money where your mouth is?!
Maybe if the MPAA had smarter teachers in the classroom when they were in school they would never try to pull fast ones like this to the Copyright office in the first place!
MAC users should be rejoicing around the world!
What this actually means is that hackers are noticing MACs are gaining in population and and they see profit in targeting them.
What's going to fall next, Rome?
Please Linux and MAC fanboys take a hike!
I challenge every one of you to put yourself in the market when Microsoft was becoming a prominent player in the OS field and not compete to win. Microsoft competed to win where as everyone now is just competing for a piece of the market.
I have seen many people confuse the components of a Windows PC and Microsoft loves this, why should they complain if the users think Office is the OS.
I would love to see real competition in the OS/Apps market, but I don't think it is going to come from disorientated and/or disgruntled Linux developers. If you want to move off of servers, put your money where your mouth is and form a worldwide For Profit company. But herein lies the problem, Linux at its root is based on rebelling from main stream. There are too many people out there that think their version of Linux OS/Apps is better and will fight to the death protecting them.
And the analogy to cars is way off course. At least I can go to 20 different dealerships to buy a car and I will know how to drive each one of those cars without retraining. Yeah, they may look different, sound different and drive differently, but I can 'operate' any of them. I can not say the same for Linux.
Get yourself a submarine, anchor it underwater in a location with good underwater current flows, connect the propeller to an electric generator (think wind generator but using water instead of wind to rotate the generator) to power your air and water generation units, buy lots of books and live your life the way you want to. The combination of submarine, anchor chain and water make an excellent faraday cage, you won't get many people inside to take your pictures, you can fish for all the food you need so you do not have to use your shopping advantage cards or credit cards that sell your information. Every once in a while have your friends sink a newspaper or two to keep up on current events. You can even create some floppy disks with your Apple II and float them up for your friends to copy and paste (provided they kept their Apple II) your work or ideas so that your privacy can be maintained without a telephone line. Or, just join the rest of the world "no pain no gain" or "if you want to play you need to pay". Just keep a few torpedoes in case someone finds you...

The real competition will be when China's super computer competes against IBM's on Jeopardy.
Who do you think we are going to buy the trains and tracks from? This will be a deal to work down the debt.
