This was already deduced in the original story by this post. To wit:

I hate to sound like an AOL sympathizer, but the TOS specifically refers to "posts." Besides IM, AIM also provides message board services (or so I'm told by people who don't use Trillian, Gaim, or Psi).

Does "posts" refer to regular IM usage? AOL implies not, referring to "message board posts, chat participation, and homepages."

My reading of this is that AOL retains usage rights to everything you post on their static forums... forums which basically anyone can access. While I would feel better if this were not the case, that is a good bit better than AOL reading the I.M.'s you send to your co-workers.

It sounds like CYA to me. As if AOL were giving themselves the right to decide to add access to the chat forums online or through AOL's proprietary service. It's the kind of CYA that inspired them to prohibit people from using AIM "while driving, operating hazardous equipment, or engaging in other forms of hazardous activities."

On the other hand, go ahead and tell everyone on AIM about the TOS, without explaining that it's only posts. Then try to switch everyone over to Jabber. Please. The whole I.M. universe right now is about as convienient as sending E-mails from CompuServe to AOL in 1992.

To be fair, Slashdot at least says, on every page, " All trademarks and copyrights on this page are owned by their respective owners. Comments are owned by the Poster. The Rest © 1997-2005 OSTG."

I'll get to the on-topic post in a little bit.

I've lived "on my own" for the past 4 years and although I know how to cook certain meals and I like to experiment in the kitchen, it's something I associate as a "hobby" - I go down to the fresh market, buy salmon, buy leafy greens I've never heard of, etc. with results that are sometimes visually disastrous (3 ft. tall flames englufing a Jack Daniel's-soaked salmon fillet) yet still delicious. Most of the time, it is a pain in the ass to get home from work late in the day (say, 8pm) and then spend an hour doing more "work", cooking as opposed to just eating.

I've found, for the budget conscious, that $20 in Chinese food will usually get me and a companion through most of the week. I've also cultivated a mental list of which days food is cheap where. Mind you, I live in a borderline suburban/rural location in a state famous for its love of chain restaurants, so my choices are pretty limiting. However, the local Irish restaurant/pub has half-price appetizer Mondays (half-rack of ribs... $4.45!) and half-price burgers on Tuesdays (bison + bacon cheeseburger, caesar salad, asparagus... $4.95!). Wednesdays the local brewery has half-price gourmet pizzas (portobella, shiitake, oyster and crimini mushrooms, grilled red onion, fresh herbs, fontina and mozzarella... $4.75!) which are large enough to split.

Even going to "finer" restaurants can be quite cheap. I've found that most portions that now go as appetizers are enough for me to split with someone else and we're both satisfied. Mind you this is somewhere where you're paying $15 for an appetizer (they usually call them something preposterously self-important, like "beginnings").

That said, home cooking is still best, not only because of the price but because you know, at least moreso than if you're at a restaurant, what exactly you are eating.

And the on-topic comment? I highly recommend stock.xchng which carries my personal distinction of being the only Hungarian site I ever visit.

At that time, 1 million gil cost around $160 dollars. Today, you could buy 1 million gil for £36. The irony here is that the people who bought gil back in October essentially wasted their money and, if the trend continues, the same goes for people who buy it today.

That, to me, doesn't make any sense. That's like saying today you are wasting your time spending $40,000 on a brand new BMW when you could've gotten one for $10,000 many years ago.

Also, what you've described is actually currency deflation, as now each real US dollar buys MORE gil. If you mean items in-game are now more expensive, then yes, that is inflation (compared to gil). However, you didn't really mention that.

The whole argument boils down to this:

    1. "I don't have the money to just buy a mansion with five Wherecats and +6 Pantaloons of Obedience."
    2. "I don't have the time to be unemployed and play the game for eight hours each day."

The only way to combat this is to make the game fun at every level. Have being a Level 1 character be just as fun as being a Level 40 character. There will still be some people who, no matter what, still want to be a high level character to show off how cool they are but this works about as well as the idiot driving around in a yellow Hummer who thinks he's the cat's imported Chinese silk Neiman Marcus pajamas.

But, ultimately, in your example, the people who spent $160 for 1M gil in October presumably could buy more with that 1M gil than the people who spent $68* for 1M gil today.

    * Honestly, why switch around currencies to make your point? It just muddles up the post.
