OFFTOPIC: The Bush administration is so smart! Let's see, nearly all of Al Quaeda is Arab; 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi; and yet we bomb the fuck out of Afghanistan! Way to go Bush! Say, you wouldn't happen to have any friendly oil contacts there, would you?
Yeah, they caught some kid who doesn't like the government. He defaced websites and installed a (probably unworking) cgi script to log into a government site. Go get'em cowboys! Take all his computers, and make an example of him.
Meanwhile, REAL terrorists plot to REALLY blow shit up. And guess what - they don't fucking RUN anarchist web sites. They're smarter than that, and obviously smarter than US intelligence. OBL is on the loose. Omar is on the loose. Yeah, lock some fucking geek up, and take away his web presence. That makes me feel safer.
This is great news for the poor folk trying to convince their management to use Linux instead of another *nix or Windows NT/2K/whatever. This is also where Linux will stay for the time being, and maybe that's a good thing. When you look at what's required of a server versus a desktop (in terms of stability and performance) I would much rather have Linux prove itself in the server market and then move to the desktop. Think about Windows' Desktop->Server migration - we all know how messy that's turned out. Linux was rarely offered as an installed server option 5 years ago, and today it's replaced an enterprise level OS. My bet is on the same sort of track for the desktop market.
The eighties aren't coming back and neither is that alien robot from "Flight of the Navigator." ...or...
"Nouveau" minimalist design will always look like shit.
The Old Testament has a lot of Pissed Off God moments, where mass murder, the killing of infants, and stoning people to death is all Good and Holy. Violence can be used to accomplish Good things, such as victory over Hitler in WWII. Sexual perversion has never accomplished anything good. Regardless, I say rate arcade games like movies, and check their ID at the door.
Offtopic: Censorship Christians, you must remember a few things about the Good book. In it, God specifically ordered his followers to "take" virgins from conquered nations after killing everyone else (Numbers 31). He laid down guidelines about owning slaves (Leviticus), when it's OK to beat them (Leviticus), killed the firstborn of an entire nation (duh), and advised parents to beat their children like slaves (Proverbs). Were censorship truly blind and even, the Bible would be the first book out of the library. So, uh, be careful what you legislate for.
Ted: What? Bill: The Gnome graping program. The little guys make wine and even do your taxes! Open source booze, dude! Excellent! Ted: Dude, he's talking about math. Bill: Bogus.
Yes, it's very PC, but Christmas is purely a tradition for me. This is the melting pot, folks! Enjoy the diversity!
So Happy Hannukah, Merry Kwaanza, Happy Yule (for the Wiccans), have a rejoiceful Ramadan. And Happy (insert tradition here) to the Hindus, Buddhists, shamans, Incans, Native peoples, Taoists, at whatever time of year your celebrate your, uh, thingy. And a big shout out to all the pagan brothers and sisters practicing their "fertility rites" during the break from work. You know who you are.
...here I thought Gore won the vote by 200,000 AND the figure you are talking about is old. The "latest, greatest" independent study suggested that a full and total recount of Florida would have yielded the presidency to Gore. Move along now.
Government should have no say on what is or is not moral. Remember kids, the government is the enemy - our founding fathers knew that. The system is designed with checks and balances to make sure they can't fuck up the good things in life too quickly.
I know you're old; I know you're scared of people; but if you think the government is moral (obviously according to *your* set of moral values) then you are plainly delusional. Right now GW is milking this terrorist attack for as much as he can - just look at how little he consults congress and claims that nearly everything can be defined under "executive power" and national security. Secret military tribunals with broad definitions; the power to negotiate trade (passed by 1 vote) - he's bullying his way to more power, and the scary thing is we don't know why. This is the same man who, while trying to gain the support of Muslim nations, used the phrase "crusade against terrorism?" Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick. I might as well move to Canada.
Miracles don't happen. Supernatural events have never been recorded. If no one had told you about God, would you be aware of him?
Luke 21:32 "I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things [end of the world, etc.] have happened." Jesus, circa 2000 years ago. If any of his original apostles are still left, speak up!
Miracles don't happen. Supernatural events have never been recorded. Period.
If no one had ever told you about God, would you be aware of him? If he/she/it is out there, they don't seem to give a damn about what happens here anyway.
"I tell you the truth, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things [end of the world, etc.] have happened." - Jesus, Luke 21:32, c. 2000 YEARS AGO
"There are people who believe that commercial software should not exist at all--that there should be no jobs or taxes around commercial software at all," Gates said. While that's a small group, "the GPL was created with that goal in mind. And so people should understand the GPL. When people say open source, they often mean the GPL." -Bill Gates
Oh, right Bill. That's why the net was such a failure. No one could make money off of it.
...or you might become a heretic.
Hmmm... evidence? Can you show me a photograph of the chariots at the bottom of the Red Sea? How about Noah's Ark that has been found so many times, they haven't even bothered to bring back evidence? The fact is, there is no hard evidence of anything supernatural caught on a photograph, video, or audio recording. It's amazing how all of these miracles ceased when humanity gained the ability to prove their experiences beyond a written testimony.
I think the internet is getting a very bad reputation for being truthful to advertisers. For the first time they are being told exactly how much money they are making of off marketing, and it isn't much. Budweiser makes great commercials but I won't drink one if I think it tastes like urine. The market will decide what sells, not the ads.
In some cases ads do win the battle (preps who buy brand names, for instance). On the whole they are inneffective, and just because internet ads aren't tangible doesn't mean they work any less than real world ads. Think about how many billboards you passed by today. Do you remember any of them?
I wanted nice, sturdy, and comfortable chairs for my backyard. I had a few options: $15 for a chair and ottoman (adirondack plastic) at Wal Mart, $23 for the same thing at Bed Bath and Beyond, or $85 per set for untreated wood chairs at Pier One that would probably rot away in a year. I chose option 1. People obsess over having nice things, and form has become far more important than function. People pay, not only for brand names, but even where they bought the item. Go to Staples and look at a translucent office chair for $25, and find the exact same brand at Bed Bath & Beyond for $50. It's pretty fucked up when sports stars who advertise products are paid tens of millions of dollars, and scientists solving real problems get far less. Personally, I'm more worried about the ecosystem than what sports "hero" likes my brand of bleach.
Corporations are interested in making money, so they make us interested in spending it. Imagine your life without anything invented past 1980, and it would be pretty much the same, except you might go outside and realize that other people exist, and you are not the most important. Want and need are two different things. It seems people want to work for more things that they don't need. It's the American way.
If you can't get past the profanity, there's no hope for you anyway.
Look, mailbombing these idiots isn't going to do any good. It's a knee-jerk reaction to a knee-jerk reaction. Regardless, there will be so many of them that an admin is just going to wipe it clean every hour for a few days until we forget about this story and find something else to complain about. If you really want to make a difference, talk to someone IN PERSON at school, or at least stop preaching to the choir (Katz: this means you too). Stop hiding behind your computer. Throwing epithets through pseudo-anonymous electronic communication is pointless.

Fighting for peace is like fucking for virginity. Don't fight stupidity with stupidity, try to communicate. Don't hate the people who hate you. You might be surprised to find out that bully is a lot like you.
Electric cars are held back by a few huge factors. Environmentally, they require batteries and huge amounts of energy to recharge them. They are not capable of long distances, and recharge times are long.
If I had to bet on a new "green" car, it would be the e.Volution. Sorry name, but a great product. Take known principles of internal combustion engines and use compressed air to cause expansion rather than explosive fuel. Plus, it's not vaporware, and the people pushing the car are *against* having distribution channels and whatnot. Check out their website at http://www.zeropollution.com/zeropollution/index.h tml.
A few people are saying "What's this good for? Why do we need this?"
Very few things are discovered on purpose - think the Light Bulb versus Becquerel and atomic energy. If they had discovered some neato trick that would let you turn old tupperware into a PC, people would say "Why aren't we researching more?"
So don't complain about the lack of use in research projects. The farther a scientist reaches to find an answer, the more likely he'll discover something that we *will* be able to use.
I am lazy, like any other person is. I'm not sure what I want, but I do know I want it to work (without a lot of hassle). I used linux for at least half of my "computing" time about a year ago. I even installed a mandrake box that routed a DSL connection to a small office. Linux is the choice for that kind of application.
However, when I use my computer to produce a document (database, word processing, web pages, graphic design) I'll use Windows or a Mac. Why? Because every time I print, the color matches and the text is where it should be. I find that using Linux, while more fun, slows my productivity by at least 50%. Why? The applications are simply sub-par. They work, but barely. If you don't believe me, then show me the nicest GIMP art, compared with work done in PSP or Photoshop. Compare a web page produced in flash or dreamweaver, to one created with jed. I realize the relationship of good users to good end results, but don't you think the better designer would use the better tools? Could it be that they don't use linux because the applications aren't good, rather than the popular notion that they just don't know about linux?
"Calling it "too big" is like saying that buildings everywhere are "too tall" because the Empire State Building has "too many" floors."
Talk about third rate writer. You're comparing a building with an operating system. The point of the article is saying this: If you want new users, you have to offer something new. If the slashdot community thinks hassle, complexity, and the joy of spending 6 hours trying to get XWindows to work is attractive, you're missing the main point of the operating system: to run programs that John Doe wants to use, without John Doe reading 30 pages of configuration docs.
Alan Cox said it himself: "We need to take Linux to the level where you can give it to your grandmother, and not expect a phone call back except to say "thanks".
So here's your choice. Keep linux on the "bleeding edge" so it remains elite, or make it usable for the masses. Judging from your attitudes, it looks like I'll be using Whistler and other hated Microsoft products for a long time.

Why Work Sucks
·
· Score: 1
Basically, in a free market economy, it's every person/organization for themselves. I'm sure you know this. However, if you are tired of companies putting the bottom line ahead of everything else, then you should ask yourself a question: do you put the bottom line above everything else? Most people would immediately quit a job if they had to take a large pay cut, and simply find another. Even if the company had been flexible about work hours, given them advances, or even given a few extra days off, most people would not consider staying with the company to help it through a time of need. Nearly everyone has their own "bottom line," and will do what they have to do to make sure that they don't go broke. That's why work will always suck.
