I think the only problem I would have is that if you are using a provider and then they change their policy. In UTAH ( where I don't live either) there are a lot of families that would want this, so I could see it becoming a profitable thing there. So if you ended up living there, you could end up screwed looking for an ISP that does not block it.

Personally I think the real solution is for the ISP's to offer an OPTION of turning this on or off on a per user basis. Maybe they send you some hardware that they update or something. Hmm, sounds like a business model to me.

Filter-at-home => a service that will filter your content for you. You specify what you don't like, no rock music, not porn, and Filter-at-home will filter that content for you. Hmm this could work.....

Also some jobs require people to be in the office and doing meetings and things like that, and while some can be done via telecommuting, sometimes face to face is more effective.

Then there is the case where remote employees get to do whatever they want and get away with slipping deadlines and all sorts of excuses because management does not know enough about the issues, which while it can happen in the office, you are more likely to see someone surfing the web and not getting things done in the office then someone at home playing wow.

I agree the problem of prison needs reform, but maybe we should not let prisons to be traded on the stock market, like they are in a few states. Also they should not be allowed to profit from prison work.

The real problem is that prison is not a reform place, it is a place where people can hone their skills as murders, rapists, and thief's.

I think this is more of a pda/laptop market space. Except for palm, which has not released a new OS version for their pda's , no-one really makes a pda anymore, for sale, in the US. They are all being made a cell phone / pda combination. While surfing the web on an iPhone or crackberry may sound like a good thing, it is not for everyone. Some people want something with a little larger of a screen and a little more like a laptop, but not a heavy as a laptop. This is also where the nokia N770/800/810 fit and the UMPC line. When you want more power than a phone but not the weight of a laptop. Think of it as you want to go on vacation and check your email and surf the web, but you don't feel like you need a 15" screen. You should really see how in Nazi Germany they started their 'purification' program, saying that Jews were bad, and then expanded it to include gays, mentally disabled, and then disfigured people and the handicap. Actually public libraries are just that. In fact, anyone can go to a public library, even the homeless and get a library card and use the computers there. So having computers in libraries is basically giving everyone a computer and internet access, even if it is limited.

I can see banning them from OWNing a computer, and requiring that their internet access be monitored, but baring them from the internet today is insane!

Can they take online classes? Can they search for housing? Can they use google maps? I guess they cannot get a job that they may need internet access to search for information. I guess this means they cannot get an iPhone / blackberry either, or any phone that allows internet access, which is most of them today.

  18. what about number of reads on Top Solid State Disks and TB Drives Reviewed · · Score: 1, Interesting

ssd's have a limited lifetime of number of reads and writes. I would imagine that a 10 year old hard drive that was used all day would last longer than an ssd. I would also imagine that someone who does a lot of compiling and disk writes would wear down the ssd and then have to throw it out and replace it. I know that they have some technology that spreads this out on some devices, but still. I think having the main OS on an SSD would be ideal and then the swappable parts could be on a regular disk. You could make the OS read only, so it would be less likely to have a hacker install virus software to the OS directly and the OS could refuse to run software in the read only space. While this would be limiting, it would solve some of the issues we have today with virus and security.

Here is what I would suggest: 1 multi-column drop down, with sort capabilities. This is something that is available in desktop applications; 2) built-in browser menu; 3) better scripting modal window, I should have OK(alert), OK/Cancel(confirm), Yes/No, and Yes/No/cancel message boxes at least or a better way of specifying these.

Maybe some of this is improvements in JS/ECMA Script, but making more things 'built-in' to the browser, would make a more standard experience, assuming you could get everyone to upgrade to the browsers and people to develop to these standards.

After reading this article, it would be nice to have both these standards merged into one so I get xforms with HTML5 menu and toolbars.
