And the more viable that home disto becomes, more and more Slashdotters will move to BSD to keep their l33t status. BSD stories will dominate Slashdot as Linux is denounced as an evil movement bent on world domination.
Its not that its cheaper to outsource, but rather that outsourcing expenses show up on a different financial table than regular employees. You can claim alot of cost cutting/employee reductions and boost your image to Wall St. Of course, you spend more and get less service. But hey, we cut our medical costs!
One of the reasons outsourcing companies are having it rough right now is because they are thinking of closing that loophole. Outsourcing expenses would have to be reported right with employee expenses. Businesses are waiting to see how that shakes out before spending more in this little accounting scam.
Except that if it is being IMported, then the Saudis are doing business here in the USA. However, buy your arguement, maybe we should drag the Saudis in court and enforce our anti-discrimination laws, no?
Its cases like this that scream for the ADA to be struck down. The ADA was enacted so that the disabled had access to public (meaning government) facilities so they could actively participate in democracy. This law was not enacted so every business had to go out of their way to support less that 0.01% of the population in EVERY aspect of business. This gentleman no doubt could have picked up a phone and received the same services that the website offered. If that was unacceptable to him, then he could exercise his rights as a consumer and taken his business elsewhere. I hope this airline has the guts to fight this nonsense.
So what your're saying is Fanning has Ballz and you don't. Thanks for making that abundantly clear. I'm sure your brothers/sisters/other relatives are sleeping easier now.
One thing that struck me as I read this comment is this: Why haven't a bunch of indie labels band together and offer service? New music at a low price. What about low volume music like the jazz/blues/classical? Anyone listening?
And yes, I realize that the jazz/blues/classical categories are more or less in the Music Cartel (RIAA). But you can't tell me that these divisions are dieing to sell more copy.
That depends. Are the Win2k boxen here administered by the individual users or the school? If through the school, then put up an Active Directory and push software. If by the individual users, then the problems for Win2k are no different than if they ran Win9x, WinXP, or some flavor of Linux.
Automakers were concerned the legislation would require them to turn over the calibration codes... The calibration codes would have been very usefull to the car hacker community. Too bad we can't make 'em give up the goods.
Frankly, as an HP employee, I am alarmed at all this closeness with Microsoft lately (this, plus the media center PCs....what's next??).
Ohhhh, poor baby. Would you like your bottle? The trials and trubulations of a for profit company doing business with another for profit company to, can you believe the evil, sell goods and services for profit!!!! What is the world comming to? God forbid your company work with an OS that reaches over 90% of the PCs out there. The horror of having to consider the end user!
Well duh! There is, like, TOTALLY a reason. Those actors and rock stars are just, like, so totally cool and good looking. Of course they desirve a cut. Scientists, well they're just dweebs anyway. They're soooooo uncool.
I'd suggest you work a real union job before you (and the rest of the anti-Union Slashdot crowd) keep spouting off. Most unions came about because the work was dangerous. Look at the automotive and steel industries. In a heartbeat you can be killed or maimed for life. That is where the unions were born and grew. Unions look out for the safety of the workers, make sure foremen treat employees fairly (and yes, they have to look out for that one), and make sure members can enjoy the benefits negotiated at the bargaining table. Do you really think for a second that any of us would have any health care coverage if the Unions didn't make that the norm? Having actually been a UAW member, I can report that dues come out to 2 hours of work A MONTH! That's right, regardless of pay the union deducts 2 hours of pay per month. For that 2 hours of pay I got: a higher wage, FULL health care (better than I get now as a member of the tech community and I didn't pay a deduction out of my paycheck for it), job safety, educational reimbursement, legal protection, educational seminars, fitness facilities, job security, job dignity (foreman can't just come up to me and start cussing, he'd end up coming back to apologies, true story), and a whole host of other benefits that I can't remember now. All for 2 hours a month. Don't give me that "poor guy couldn't pay union dues so not he can't work" crap. Lastly, if I get unemployed, the union will attempt to find me a job. You just can't beat that. Other than the fact the work sucks I don't ever want to do it again. But I shudder to think what the working conditions would be like without the union there to keep thing fair. Not overwhelming in my favor, but fair.
Course, we all know that the management structures out there all work in OUR favor and would never kill workers for demanding fair treatment, lie to employees, investors, and the government about earnings leading to the layoffs of tens of thousands and financial ruin of many while paying these same criminal VPs and CEOs millions, nor would they ever engage in such reprehensible child labor/sweatshop conditions if given the chance.
Having said all that in defense of unions, I don't believe that tech workers will unionize, nor do I think it would be appropriate. We work with our minds, not our backs. We do not face the physical dangers that would necessitate a union. While companies will furiously try to turn our jobs into simple skill, assembly line work, it will ultimately fail because our tech jobs require well thought out plans and quick emergency thinking.
As I read through the comments, I am struck with one thought: Every year we get closer and closer to the society described in Neromancer and other cyberpunk works.
Actually, I have found the opposite to be true. The Windows admins are getting the boot and the *nix admins suddenly have to deal with Windows servers they are not familar with. Either way, it a bad situation to be caught it.
Ahhh, but you have to CHOOSE our culture. You choose to buy those jeans, that Starbucks, that Big Mac. We may be setting up shop, but you don't have to buy. Euro-Disney didn't exactly set Europe on fire, did it?
You are also forgetting that many of the "freedoms" you list are abundant in America and most often of a much higher quality.
If you take something from me without my permission, and against my will, then you are a thief, pure and simple.
But I have not taken anything from you. You still have it. You still have the ability to sell it. I cannot sell it. I may even, if the work proves WORTHY, buy a legit copy myself. Your arguement is full of holes.
A crime on par with rape, murder, civil rights abuses? No, but that's the kind of punishment you will get if you break the DMCA or violate copyright laws online. And since the definition of copyright violation has drasitly shifted the last couple of years, it makes sense to challenge it.

Well thought out??? The guy is just pissed becuase HIS page isn't ranked high. Everything else is just a poorly-reasoned justification to support his self-centered conclusion.
The real question is does Google work well? The answer for the majority of people is a resounding yes, hence Google's popularity. Google's aim is not to be democratic, but to be the best search engine it can be for the majority of people.
How much back end support did your bid provide? That will be a determining factor. No matter how simple the project, IT shops always end up using the back end support. Maybe the other company had a more established support structure, hence the higher cost. An IT manger who has his ass on the line because he's spending company money will sleep better at night knowing that when (not if, but when) the software breaks, he can get it fixed.
Facts:
Napster unmolested in in it's heyday: Record highs in sales and profits for the music industry.
Napster eliminated by music industry: Sales and profits dip significantly.
Even an MBA should be able to put this one together.

Reasonable accommodation? You mean like picking up a phone and accessing the same services?
Instead of making websites write extra code to conform to some obscure conversion program, why not make the conversion software read HTML correctly?

Doesn't mean dick if the admins don't patch it. Just like Windows systems: The major attacks exploited vulnerablilities that were already patched.

Their insistence that nothing has changed when there is ample fact that something HAS changed is very 1984-ish. We know where Winston Smith works now.

What do you mean the "old" IBM? They haven't changed. They still act like they're the 800 pound gorilla.
