    Time to get those compact fluorescents

    I tried these a few years ago, they gave off a very strange colour of light that makes peoples skin look orange.. have they improved? Maybe some brands have more natural light than others?

    It's so common to hear lay-people refer to the computer as their "hard drive".

    I wonder if this guy thinks that he can save a few pennies a month if he could figure out how to make his VCR stop flashing 12:00.

    Not true .. I only replace drives when they die. Although that could explain why my PC at home has 4 hard drives in it.

    I thought the ban on the porn was to protect the children who are harmed by creating said porn. If there is no market for it, less will be created, and less kids forced to be performers in those movies.

    You can configure Firefox 2 to have a single tab close button, like in 1.5.

    Go into about:config, change browser.tabs.closeButtons to 3.

    First there was KVM [wikipedia.org] switches and then there was the Java KVM [sun.com] (kilobyte VM).

    Now there's the linux KVM [sf.net] which has nothing to do with either those or the Kernel VM rewrites of the linux past.

    Leave that acronym alone !

    KVM? Personally, I'm waiting for the Gnome version.

    Slashdot's moderation and meta-moderation offer one example of getting useful metadata in a non-trusted environment.

    The tagging system might be a better example, or at least an example of mostly useless meta information.

    Cost of the software is a tiny portion of the "Total Cost of Ownership", or TOC. Support contracts and making this stuff all work together is where the costs are.

    Does anyone seriously think these sanctions will stop him from getting these products? The guy managed to get nukes, for cryin out loud. I think getting a black market iPod should present little problem to him.

    Exactly. I'm no export on Six Sigma, but my company is heavily into it, and I had to go to the introductory course. Opertunities would include colour, shape, hardness of the plastic, just to name a few. One perfect lego block could represent a dozen or more opertunities for error.

    I'd be curios to know what this guys income is. I'm sure someone making $25,000/year would have a much tougher time re-establishing credit than a guy making $100,000/year.

    This is why they change protocols and binary formats. If you can't open an Excel doc from your customer since he has a newer version, you are forced to upgrade. Plus they stop giving updates for older software. These are the 2 main ways MS has historically forced people to buy new software every few years.
