    Even if they can crack the hash, this scheme is not entirly practical. They still have to download *every version* of a given file on the network, corrupt each one, then wait for others to begin downloading these corrupted files from them. For a record company with 10,000's of songs in it's library, this will be an impossible task.

    No offence intended.. My personal experience in talking to security personnel has been that they are uneducated, unmotivated, and can't get a decent job paying more than $10 (Canadian) per hour. They also tend to be on constant power trip, asserting their "authority" and trying to intimidate people. Obviously my sample size is small, and doesn't represent all security personnel.

    More then a few of them were quite effective, ex-military and reservists that enjoyed providing protection,

    Or at least that's what they told you ... Sounds like delusions of grandeur to me.

    Depends on your definition of corrupt. If the client can modify or delete, then damage can happen, wether intentional or not.

    My company's mission-critical Time and Attendance/Payroll system runs on DOS. We've considered upgrading it, but that would require replacing all the security card readers in two buildings, replacing barcode scanners in the plant (used for time/attendance and worker productivity tracking), and of course the servers and software. The current system works, so we couldn't justify the cost to management.

    That said, I'd rather use DOS than any version of Windows prior to Win2K.

    Actually a lot of spammers use the "Unsubscribe" feature just to confirm that your email address is valid, which makes it more valuable and more likely to get future spam.

    I just ssh to my linux box at home and start the download .. By the time I'm home from work the download is complete! :-) Works great with "nohup wget&" too.

    It's increasingly likely that in the years to come it will be possible to rent videos by having a set-top box coupled to a DSL or Cable broadband pipe, which downloads DRM-enabled video files from a central server.

    I'm already doing this .. My digital cable box has "On Demand", where I can watch free movies or rent newer movies. You can stop, rewind, pause, just like a DVD (although more slugishly, and without the annoying animated menues). Doing the same thing with Bit Torrent on my PC doesn't seem like a step forward.

    Wouldn't a simple USB keychain memory stick be so much easier and quicker? Not to mention reliable? Knoppix has done this for years...
