The other whistleblowers. Manning, Assange, Jeremy Hammond..etc etc.
Whether or not you like their methods these people are effectively doing the same thing. Uncovering and making known actions of the US (and other gov'ts) that are in direct conflict with humanity and the exisiting legal framework.
My father once told me: If ten employers can sit around a table and decide how much to pay you, the employee should be able to have ten people sit around a table and decide how much you will be paid to work. This would be a union. (Or if you wish not to be be labeled union... many in the tech sector think.... "I'm not a blue collar thug... I am a Professional".. call yourself a special interest group)
The people sitting on one side of the negotiating table have specific interests to defend. The people on the other side have a different set of interests. That is why we call it negotiation. Hopefully to arrive at an equitable position for both sides.
Did it ever occur to anyone that the dysfunction of say Congress is so that there will never be an equitable solution for both sides to a given problem?
At the heart of all dysfunctional relationships (personal, political etc) lies on thing: Chaos. This way the people in power keep the power.
While I agree with most of this article, whenever I see helping the developing world or poor people I cringe. Bill Gates said the PC would end poverty as well. It's bullshit. Money changers move in and exploit the system. What started out with good intentions ends up in the hands of powerful people who exploit it.
Somewhere around the summer of 2000 I read an article in Wired magazine that addressed this wishful thinking. As of the writing of the article the author claimed that half of the world population had yet to make or receive a telephone call. I was staggared. With cell phone technology my guess is things have changed a bit.
As with telephones.... it will be adopted on a large scale only when venture capitalists and the money changer have arranged their cuts.
"He's revealing how we acquire this information. It will take years, if not decades, for us to return to the position that we had prior to his disclosures."'
I certainly hope my later years are not in a wheelchair or other restrictive lifestyle. My lifestyle has been active all of my life. This reminds me of Hunter S Thompson's line:
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!”
Lets start on people in positions of power... politicians..CEOs. Surely the numbers would be off the charts. I don't think anyone can rise to the top of the political or capitalist systems and be a really really nice person.
Instead of this: "Bitcoin protocol that could allow a small cartel of participants to become powerful enough that it could take over the mining process and gather a disproportionate amount of the value in the system,"
It should have read: Federal Reserve/Wall St. protocol that could allow a small cartel of bankers to become powerful enough that it could take over the printing process and gather a disproportionate amount of the value in the system,
And as a result of this kind of thinking Gates and other capitalists employ you get this:
"As long as most citizens believe in the ideas that justify global capitalism, the private and state institutions that serve our corporate masters are unassailable. When these ideas are shattered, the institutions that buttress the ruling class deflate and collapse. The battle of ideas is percolating below the surface." Chris Hedges
The old give it to me first so I can redistribute it to whom I see fit..... and most of us blame governments for doing this. Capitalists do the same thing.
Eliminate unbridled global capitalism and you have a chance at saving the world. MCDonalds is crap nutrition but their food distribution system is fantastic. Eliminate the need for McDs profits and use the food distribution for humanity... you might get somewhere.
I would venture to say that the creation of Linux (and other open source software) has done more to benefit humanity that Windows (or OSX).
Just read some of the comments and you'll see the audience of this rag. Slashdot can do better than to post this crap. If Ann Coulter is associated with it..... I'm NOT.
Do you spell bullshit with 1 L or 2? The totalitarian state will do as it pleases and have discussions to appease the masses.
Do you really think the people behind the sureillance will one day say "yea..i guess you are right we should not be doing this" to people, countries and businesses? That would be like the wall street bankers saying "yea..you are right..here is your money back"
This does not surprise me. One step out of line in this town..and down you go. I often see a couple of teenaged kids... with 4 cops puffing their chests out. Probably for skateboarding.
Each and every one of us uses free software...open source software... etc etc for any number of reasons. Putting labels on things and writing articles like this only serve to dumb people down.
Then there would be no worry about your oh so precious life ending up online.
The trail has already happened. The US government is guilty.
Hahaha.. that is beautiful

It would do my heart good if she moved to another state so we can get back to business as usual around here....
I find more reasons to just up and leave the USA. This culture totally sucks.
American Gov't always speak with forked tongue.
"He's revealing how we acquire this information. It will take years, if not decades, for us to return to the position that we had prior to his disclosures."'
Let us hope we can never return to that position.

So, if you can, just leave. Don't be a cog in the evil that the u.s. has become. If you can't leave, then do what you can to not support it.
At present I'm tying up loose ends to leave. This has been a long time coming. By the summer of 2014 I'll be gone.
P.S. I'm also dropping out of the western culture.

Right.. sociopaths and psychopaths are not known for experiencing fear
