  1. Re:Not 'free' on Why Aren't People Abandoning Windows For Linux? (slashgear.com) · · Score: 1

This truly is what computing should be.

For the vast majority of users, yes. For those that require real processing power (architects and design engineers who need a proper CAD system, developers using compiled languages, gamers, artists and hobbits who want CAD and development at a decent speed), no. There is still a large market for full blown computers out here. Also, the internet is not quite there yet, as far as continuous uptime and accessibility, for a network-centric OS to be viable for everyone.

There's also the habit of providers data mining and spying on everything you do online. Storing your data and working on it online only compounds that and makes it easier to do. They no longer have to break into your system to get access to your data, you've given it to them, along with the permission to look through it, via the EULA you didn't read.

  2. Europeans are very much allowed to cross internal borders to access whichever meatspace shop they like.

Exactly my point. Don't like the price for a product online? Go purchase it in a store.

  3. Do they require this of petrol companies as well, or are their prices not different by location? As far as Valve goes, you can activate games not purchased on Steam, so just purchase it in the store if you don't like the price.

Also, didn't the movie industry pretty much invent geo blocking? Or was it the publishing (book) industry? Are they going after them as well?

  4. In order to make it there to begin with it would have to be huge.

Or it could be very tiny like the StarChip proposal. But either way it is not landing on any planets.

I'm not sure I'd consider those star ships any more than I do the Voyager probes, which may eventually pass into another star system. Even though they'll be targeted towards Alpha Centauri, unless you redefine the word 'ship', they're still probes.

  5. It'd help an interstellar spaceship if it were doing a propulsive landing on a planet with atmosphere.

Why in hell would an interstellar spaceship need to land on the planet it goes to? In order to make it there to begin with it would have to be huge. It certainly wouldn't take off from a planet, with or without an atmosphere, it would leave from orbit where it was built. Shirley you aren't expecting something the size of the space shuttle to be making the journey to another star system.

Facebook is lucky, as it is not a European company. It can just laugh and walk away. Companies in Europe must cause a blackout themselves or be blacked out.

Your naivety is adoring. Facebook will have to comply, as any other company doing business in EU.

But for that to happen local governments would need to adopt the laws.

What kind of business does Facebook really do "in" the EU? Facebook is a US company, and as such all they really need to do is move any servers they have out of Europe and tell them to go screw themselves. It's the EU's responsibility to filter what comes across their borders, not the other way around. Same goes for the personal info they collect. If you don't want your citizens information collected in a data mine outside of your boarders, then it's up to you to stop your citizens from giving that info away, either by blocking that site or making your citizens criminals for giving away that info.

Same same for Google. Let Google delist the EU news sites and stop showing people snippets of the news. See how long it is before the EU news sites are irrelevant in the global market.

This will hopefully drive the cost of business for US coal miners way up, since there is now a smaller market of buyers. The real question is why are we providing welfare for the mediocre?

Um, what? The EU closing a bunch of mines will not make the market smaller, it will make it larger. The coal fired power plants in the EU will still need coal, and if they're not getting it locally they will have to import it from somewhere which will drive the price up. That's a good thing for the coal miners, but not for the environment, as it will mean more strip mining in the U.S.

Possibly because the idea of a right-click (or other keyboard shortcuts) don't exist for mobile (apart from a long press in place of a right-click, I guess), so therefore a "mobile first" strategy often means making things less convenient for desktop experiences (where the developers wish to share as much code as possible and not fork the UI for the desktop).

Perhaps if this is your way of thinking, you shouldn't be making cross-device applications. The UI's should be separate not only because the display is much larger, but also the input methods differ.
