Besides, that was the heyday of the Catholic Church's power, so isn't it a good idea to steal a tried and proven method? ;-)

But they are (as far as I'm aware), the only religion to insist that you have to pay in order to gain access to their sacred texts.

Well, I recall another religion that kept all its scared texts in a language that most of the population did not understand (Latin) and if you wanted to hear the texts you had to attend an organised reading on Sunday. And God help you if you didn't contribute your 10% tithe to the church.

In fact, in many countries you still have to pay a % of your tax to the church.

So when the EU finally forces Microsoft out completely, that will count as their choice. But when American companies can't sell "Feta" or "Cheddar" cheese, in America, we have a problem.

Well, cheddar isn't a protected name - it's regarded as generic. Although seeing the artificially coloured, yellow slices of chewy pap that passes for "cheddar" in the US, you might wish it was protected so at least you'd know you'd be getting a decent piece of cheese! Similarly, in Europe when you get feta cheese or parma ham you know you're getting a decent product and not a cheap rip-off. In the US, you could get feta cheese sprayed from a can and parma ham that has never seen a pig ;-)

yes you can. Hotmail has been around a lot longer than most other web-based, free email solutions and is perfectly adequate for day-to-day use, especially when you don't want to give out your private email address to all and sundry. Sure, gmail and others might be better now, but it's a pain in the rear to start giving people new email addresses and expect them to all change from using an old one. if you've been using one for years and it's served you well, why change?

Is this just slashdot-snobbery because Hotmail is now owned by Microsoft? ;-)
