The LSB does not dictate anything to any package distributors. All the LSB does is to provide minimal standards to ensure that what works in one distro will also work in others. For example, they might specify that libc should always be in a certain directory, or that init scripts should live in/etc/rc.d/init.d.
This is solely designed to make things easier for third party app developers, since they know what they need to target. No distro is forced to follow the LSB, but if they want the maximum number of third party apps to run, then they will follow it, and get LSB certified.
Apart from this minimal framework, distro's are still free to do what they like. And since the FSG is not tied to any particular distro, they're not likely to favour one distribution over another.
To call that dictatorship is ridiculous, you might as well accuse the w3c of dictating all content on the internet, since they set the html standards.
Hmmm...I think I'm out of luck. I got mencoder working, but it appears that xmovie doesn't like video with no sound (which is what my camera records). So, no xmovie, no cinelerra:-(. If only there was a version which worked with mplayer.
Since 8.2, I've been able to plug in my USB digital camera, and it just works. As long as you make sure the USB service is started on boot (using the graphic config tool) you should be OK.
Ah yes, I think you're right - I recently upgraded my CPU, and I recompiled mplayer so it still works, but I didn't realise I had to recompile mencoder separately. I'll try that.

There is one way I can see for this to affect the DMCA. If the copyright extension law is overturned, all that would need to be done would be to find a DVD containing a film that subsequently entered the public domain (Steamboat Willy, anybody).
I believe that in that case it may be possible for a skilled lawyer to show that the DMCA was unconstitutional since there is no provision in it for removing access restrictions from works which subsequently enter the public domain. But as usual IANAL, YMMV, etc.
How would a Linux/AOL helpdesk be any worse than a Windows/AOL helpdesk ? Besides, this is presumably not aimed at current Linux users, but rather current AOL users who want to buy a new PC.
Really, I think AOL had no choice, they could either continue to use MS software, and likely go bankrupt in 2 or 3 years when they lose all their customers to MSN, or strike out and try and distance themselves from MS.
This simple guide will show you how to troll on Slashdot without having to spend all day thinking about what to post.
1) Never post using your real name. That's what that handy 'Anonymous Coward' user is there for !
2) As soon as a new story appears on the front page, quickly post 'First Post'. If you get too excited and spell 'First Post' wrong, well, who cares, hey you're a troll ! Of course by the time you hit submit, you will likely be sixth or seventh post anyway. But who cares ! If you took the advice in step 1), you can just pretend you were one of the other Anonymous Cowards with a 'Frist P0st'.
3) There are a number of extremely hilarious tricks you can do to the formatting of your message: you can make it extra wide, or really long. Everyone on Slashdot will appreciate your fine wit, and will show their gratitude by marking you as a troll !
4) It is not necessary to make your troll be related to the story being discussed. Random text is very very funny, as are articles cut and pasted from something totally unrelated.
5) Extra points are awarded for swearing, calling people 'Linux Zealots' and claiming that well known horror/sci-fi writer Stephen King is dead.
By following these simple rules, you too can troll Slashdot !! Have fun !
I have MDK 8.2 on my desktop machine, which I keep pretty current from the Cooker. Is there any point in me upgrading to 9.0 ? Will I gain anything which I wouldn't otherwise get from Cooker ?
Then what would I plug my printer into ? We don't all have the leatest and greatest USB printers.

Thanks for the tip :-)
I tried using mencoder to convert to another format, but mencoder complains about 'illegal instruction' for some reason.
Anybody have any useful suggestions ? How can I convert the files ?
You know Lunar/Sun. But anyway, it's cool :-)
Will Lunar Linux run on Sun hardware ?
...we also paid for them to shut down Napster.
Why was your name on the "from" field ?

Some people have also suggested that Xbox is a test run for Palladium on the PC.
That is the most insightful post I have read on /. for a long long time. Thankyou for that.
It doesn't necessarily run under Wine, it could be just a rebranded NS7.

I'm not sure if you're serious, but anyway NetHack Falconseye was included in 8.2. I'd imagine that it will be there in 9.0 as well.
Remember the 2600/deCSS case ? Try telling that to the guy from 2600.
I believe RedHat's current beta attempts to solve this.
Linux is Pacman
So what ? How could you possibly get a virus from an audio file anyway ? It's pure data, not code ! Sounds like the reporter is pretty clueless.
I thought ogg's video format was going to be called Tarkin ?
Well, if Engineer 2.0 is any good, you should be able to use it yourself to engineer Engineer 3.0

Can you provide evidence of this ? I thought the ogg team were very careful not to infringe any patents.
