  7. Only became necessary due to failure to take Caen on Tank Hack Ensured Farmland Didn't Thwart the Invasion of Europe · · Score: 4, Interesting

The D-Day plan included the capture of Caen on D-Day itself. If you ever visit Normandy, it is obvious that the river valley around Caen is the only good way out. The German's realized this too, and sent every possible unit there to keep the British from seizing the exit from the beaches. Battle after battle erupted in front of Caen to keep the Allies in. The Allied plan took the bocage hedgerows into account. They were protection from German counter-attack while the American Army took the port of Cherbourg and the Cotentin peninsula to serve as the staging area for incoming units to prepare for the breakout. With the main German force facing the British at Caen, the only other way to break out from the beachhead was through the bocage. This had never been part of the Allied plan, so it took some improvisation to develop tactics to break out.

Other clean diesel cars use urea tanks to clear NO emissions. There is no way a programmer made this change, and a bunch of engineers suddenly said " Hey look, we don't need to include the extra tank!" and "Hey, look, no loss of power!" No way someone wouldn't notice that.

  25. Hard to contact people with bad information on Government Still Hasn't Notified Individuals Whose Personal Data Was Hacked · · Score: 4, Insightful

We had a data breech of personal data, and needed to contact all those involved. When we obtained everyone's email and mailing address, we were surprised how bad the data was, particularly anyone who left. One person moved to Melbourne, Austria. Other addresses were town name only, no state or zip. Whoever entered it just thought it was obvious where that town was. Email servers are shut down and replaced, or departments reorganized, and everyone's email changes. No one thinks to tell the personnel department about these changes. Then, when you have a need for the data, you find half of it out of date. When there is no problem, no one pays attention to the data and tries to fix the problems.
