  1. Re:"a lot of fuss over nothing" on The Continuing Hunt for PATRIOT Act Abuses · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually, if the federal government followed the initial plans of the founding fathers and held to a truly libretarian view, the federal government would NOT have powers that could be abused, because they would have extremely limited jurisdiction. Most power would reside with the State and local authorities, with the bulk of responsibility on the individual.

In other words, the federal government would have no ability to send federal agents into a state to bust someone for drug possesion. However, if the State ruled that said activity was illegal in their state (per their electorate), the State Police or local police could arrest said drug possesor. This decentralizes the groups who hold power, thereby weakening the hold that power can have over the citizens.

The idea that the Federal government should have the majority of power, is called statism and runs the gambit from Communism to Socialism to the current hodge-podge of Statism/Libretarian values that are conflicting here in the US.

This is where I think the true dichotemy of the American electorate lies. Since 9/11 the Liberal vs Conservative shoe no longer fits. George Bush is Libretarian in his views of government regulation of business and social security, but is extremely statist in his fiscal policies, civil rights and security. On the other hand, Democrats are usually extremely Statist on almost everything except for Civil Liberties (and then only the ones they favor).

AnarchCapitalism is much closer to what this country was founded on than the socialist democracy we have today.

Note: If you believe that you are a "Citizen of the United States" you are probably misinformed. "The United States" refers only to DC and territories held by the federal government. If you live in one of the 50 States, you are a "Citizen of The State of ___________" and since your State has agreements with the other 49 you are, by extention a "Citizen of the united States of America" (note the lowercase u).

I recommend you do some research on the country you live in, and exactly how its supposed to work.

RPG's and LARPS attract intelligent, quick witted, imaginative and resourcful people. That makes up about 20% of most gamers. Gaming also attracts the socialy inept, the clinically depressed, boarderline psychopaths, and a host of rather odd people. Of course, those same sets of people also play online games, card games, etc etc etc.

The Israeli army isn't doing itself any favors by focusing on D&D, they'd be much better off getting everyone's head examined (Dear Gods, they need their heads examined for actually permitting the government to have a mandatory draft to begin with.)

Currently, the best biomass crop is hemp, it requires much less maintainence than Corn since it is similar to a weed in its nutritional needs (care and feeding of hemp is only useful when dealing with hemps psychedelic cousin, marijuana).

In early tests in Canada, an acre of Hemp produced 1000 gallons of Ethanol fuel in 4 months. that is a gain of nearly 30% over corn. It also doesn't include the seed oil which is useful as a biofuel as well.

Most of the bands that began in the Eighties are long gone, because their music didn't have the right appeal for long term survivability. They were hot, then done. Those people made a lot of money when they were Hot. If they can no longer produce atractive music, if they can no longer draw a crowd, then it sucks to be them and they should go get a job.

If I ever ceased to be able to design secure networks, I doubt the company would keep me onbaord and pay me a per packet royality. If I fail to perform, I lose my job. If TMBG ever starts to suck badly, they will lose their audience. Then, they too will have to get real jobs (not that I think they'll have a problem... 20 years is a good track record).

    I'm going down to Cowtown
The cow's a friend to me
Lives beneath the ocean and that's where I will be
    Beneath the waves, the waves
And that's where I will be
I'm gonna see the cow beneath the sea

Here in the first verse, we are told that we are entering the realm of Eris herself, The Void, or 'Chao'Town, based on the eternal symbol of Eris, The Sacred Chao. Obviously, the writer feels kinship with her sacred symbol, since "The 'Chao's a friend to me."

Now what of the next lines? If you examine the cover of the Holey Principia Discordia, you will find that the Sacred Chao is centered beneath the title, placing the "Chao" beneath the 'c'.

The yellow Roosevelt Avenue leaf overturned
The ardor of arboreality is an adventure we have spurned, we've spurned
    A new leaf overturned
    It's a new leaf overturned

First, we have a fantastic example a Discordian statement. Words hidden within words, "The Yellow Rose" "Roosevelt Avenue" and "A new leaf overturned" are mashed into a single sentence, hidden between the actual words written. A wise reminder to never believe what we read (In this case what we hear and what we read are different).

The Ardor of Arboreality, of course refers to the "Love of A bor(ing) reality" something which is spurned by the Discordian, who prefers overturning new leaves and exploring different realities.

We yearn to swim for home, but our only home is bone
How sleepless is the egg knowing that which throws the stone
    Foresees the bone, the bone
    Our only home is bone
    Our only home is bone

This verse contains two seperate esoteric messages:

First, we see that the writer sees his life as "egg" to "bone" or birth to death. There is no escaping this, for our only home (our final home) is 'bone' or death.

Of course, there is also the idea of creation, for bone can refer to the bone of Osris. Osris, of course was killed and reborn, killed and reborn again (though this time without his bone, which probably meant he had to get a strap-on for Isis). The egg would obviously refer to the Great Mother Isis. Thus we have the story of constant rebirth and life, couched in words that speak of the unavvoidable end of our lives.

The stone, may be a reference to the stone which was rolled away from the tomb of Jesus (another "Dying God" like Osirus).
