First off, I'd like to say that I think the managing of games has come a long way from the beginning. In the beginning, it seemed like you needed one key inventor/genius player on a team to make a great game. It had to be someone's child. That's what would make great games. Nowadays, people know how to manage a team and have more experience. I think that this would lead the way to great games being made without the need of one star player. A solid team with mediocre people can make a great game.

Our game science has advanced to the point where its no longer required to have a resident genius to churn out shitty sequel after shitty sequel. Imagine that.

Never did, it was very disappointing.

Inside UFO 54-40 was one of the few CYOA books that had 'a best ending', the others were all pretty open ended in the first series.

There were also the RPG CYOA style books where you had to write in the books, maintain hit points etc. Those were -incredible-.

I think you are correct for now, they are not really the standard Fortune 500 corp and there is a unique attitude that is somewhat anti-establishment which is nice.

However I believe that this is a luxury and if the stock price tumbles that may change dramatically. They can afford 'not to play the game' right now because there is so much money in the game for everyone. If that changes, even a bit, the house can start to crumble and google could change.

As others have said, they are banking on out-innovating the competition but to a certain extent its a race against time to get more solid revenue streams in place so that the collapse of any single one doesn't impact the whole.

I hope they make it, I think they do good stuff but I don't buy the hype and I truly believe that MS tends to eat all (unfortunately) and they will have a major impact on google in the years to come.

This is very similiar to early broadband access. When congress passed the Telecom act all of a sudden all these little regional players (Covad etc) came in to give us IDSL and everyone hailed 'the end of the large telecom dinosaur that cant adapt to the future' etc etc. Look at where we are now, we all get our bandwidth from some huge corp and the little guy is all but dead.

Never mistake slowness for weakness when the entity being slow is a large, ancient and powerful. There is a lot said for NOT being a first mover in those scenarios and I think this can also hurt google. Being at the top makes an easy target!

Since Laszlo apps can be output either as DHTML or as SWF contained content it works wonders for embedded development.

I'm building a small embedded linux based system to handle my A/V switching infrastructure in my home. The box itself can be considered a toaster, very much like a LinkSys router. Combining thttpd, Ruby (small footprint with Ruby2exe) serving POX(Plain Ole XML) and then Laszlo as the SWF contained client I can provide a hugely rich experience for the user on my minimalistic embedded platform.

The Eclipe IDE tools are 'Ok' and do the job well enough at the start but you'll need to tweak it a bit more to get a really solid look.

Overall this is a fantastic alternative to Adobe Flex in many ways, particularly in its openness, huge community support and low/no cost. Flex 2.0 is also low low cost now but we will see how that plays out.

So, for me Laszlo is Rich App on a thin client primarily. Very nice.
