Back in college, I noticed that people always picked the 4-5 sun's that were in the back of the lab. The biggest advantage was that nobody could see what they were doing back there.

If they 'give back some of their amazing technology back to the community', then they would lose their competitive edge. A Ferrari is fast b/c of the engine, if they had to 'open source' their engine, then we'd see minivans capable of 180mph.
Ethereal to pick up the packets and look at the fine details. But if you need graphs and treds (packets/sec... bytes/sec) source destination... ntop is great.
Plus you can use ethereal for fibrechannel/iscsi as well as traditional networking protocols (tcpip/eth)..
In order for a electrician/plumber/carpenter to work on your house they must be licensed and bonded. But a guy to fix your computer? Nothing... he could very easily sell you 64MBram for $200... install mcafee for $150... and run WindowsUpdate...
Interesting ideas, however, the fundamental problem with webpages is that they are dynamic. Try finding information on a link that was sited a few years ago.
My beef with webpages over written/printed material, is that when you create a paper and need to cite a fact/figure you can reference a book/written document for date/page/issue# paragraph/section etc.. But on a webpage (which may be dynamically generated etc..) the information may not be there the next day or they may relayout the page. You can exactly say i got it from google.com by searching for "per capita income in 1970 for the united states".
The only reason they're claiming that bluetooth is dead is because they missed the boat on creating/shipping products that use it. Its like Microsoft saying linux is dead or Redhat saying windows is dead...
If you can't sell your product, create a new one and claim the old one is "dead"...
Ok, so you go into the shop, get a $5 cup of coffee. Letsay the avg person spends 15-30 minutes in the store actually drinking it.
If a person spends an hour or so at the store, how many of them actually buy a second cup? At the local starbucks (sanjose), there's always a crowd outfront in the evenings. They're there every friday/saturday night, from dusk till dawn it seems.
If you put in Wi-Fi, do you think the people will buy 2-3 cups of coffee for the 2-3hrs they may spend online?
It all comes down to $$/hr. Either $10/hr (for 1cup every 30minutes) or 1hr online (at $10/hr).
I personally wouldn't want people buying one cup of coffee and then surfing the web for free over the span of 2hours. Its like 'window shopping', but in this case your in my shop with no intention of buying (other than a 'token' cup). Or possibly no cup at all.
I recall a study a while ago that was requesting old pairs of binoculars so that they could measure the air inside for pollutants as it could be used to determine air quality from years past.
Btw: This 'finding' does seem like a need beginning to a bad horror movie.
If NetFlix can ship me 2-3movies per week via the post office, why couldn't a company like that offer a method of allowing me to download the movie via the net? I'd gladly pay the $20/month to do this and then burn the movie at home. H*ll, they could even sell you a service/product/tv tuner to allow you to hook up your computer to your tv/stereo.
If you offer me something that I'm interested in before I start "copying" then you've got a long time customer. If you keep forcing bad music/movies to me, I'll go somewhere else. Don't waste my time.

I was working a while ago with some folks from the national weather service, and they mentioned that cities grossly affect weather patterns. As they retain heat better than unpopulated areas (ie fields, natural grasslands).
The specific instance that he pointed out was that he has witnessed storm systems in the southeast US, moving from the gulf of mexico towards Georgia, and have them go around Atlanta, b/c of all the heat it retains.
I've been working at my current company for over 1.5yrs. They went public 9months after I went there. The stock opened up on the market in the low 90s, and went as high as $150 by august... my options were worth hundreds of thousands.
The stock has since dropped to as low as $7 and has slowly crept back up to $20.
Now, you think it didn't hurt when the stock fell out of the sky? Hell ya! Earnings were/are good, the customer's were rolling in. And I was now worth bupkis, and my strike price is much lower than the current stock price. Sure this amount stinks, but the important fact is I don't need the money from the options now.
Also, do you think the stock price is going to be higher later than it is now?
Do you see your company's march to profitabilty continue?
Maybe there's something up with your company, do you think that IBM is giving out 80k shares to their webmaster or low level coders?
A slow gradual ride up is a whole lot more exciting than IPOing up at $100, because you earned it
Hype didn't make IBM, solid earnings over an extended period of time did
Stop whining about not becomnig a millionaire before you're 24. Most of those guys are now looking for employment elsewhere.
The company that I work for doesn't use colos as most of you do. We aren't there to provide content to the internet (ala yahoo), but as a content provider to other companies within the coloc. So my view is slightly different from most of yours. I have cages out here in SanJose at aboveNet, GlobalCrossing/Center, Exodus, AT&T, level3 and equinix. My cages range in size from 100sqft to over 1600sqft.
The ability of the colo to add custom racks and cable management. Both under the raised floor and hanging from the ceiling management are sometimes required. If the colo is going to setup your boxes, look at other customer's of theirs and examine the cable management. Are they label clearly, and cable tied neatly? Is the fibre tied too tightly? These are signs of sloppy cabling. If you're putting in a farm of NT servers (which require keyboard/video/mouse connections) this could be a problem. Also, when they pull copper and/or fibre how do they test it? Do they pull it pre-terminated or do they terminate it at the rack? If its pre-terminated, then where do they keep the extra cable.
Who are their partners? What other companies does the colo outsource to? Look at companies like LoudCloud (server hosting), SiteSmith (web hosting) or StorageNetworks (outsource your disk/tape). Companies like these can ease your job of keeping your boxes up and allowing you to focus on your apps.
Infrastructure Changes How quickly can the colo pull new power for you? (not just 110, but big 220V 50a). Make sure your powerstrips are on different PDUs. What about additional phone lines? Also, can you have cabling pulled between multiple cages (both yours and a partner/customer). Can you pull up a tile? Some colos will not let you pull up a tile, even in your own cage.

Would have to be nuts to wear a costume like that in pubic (err public).
