  1. Does it really make a difference any more? on Microsoft Class Action Suit Outcome: Indifference · · Score: 2

My beef is that monetary penalties against MSFT just aren't worth it. It's like fining you or me 10cents every time we speed. Big Deal.

Even forcing MSFT to make a version of windows without media player is a joke. Many people are used to using media player, and so many companies have created products counting on the fact that a user will have media player. Big Deal.

What are users going to get out of this? $10 off their next purchase of MSFT software. So now MSFT makes a slightly smaller margin on their software for .00001% of the population that happens to have this coupon. The customer is *still* giving MSFT money out of their pocket.

The gov't needs to start thinking outside the box, monetary, software reconfigs aren't going to fix it. They need to deal with MSFT like they did with the coal and railroad barons of the early 1900s and with AT&T. The gov't is always trying to put the "djini back into the bottle." We all know its easier to do wrong and beg for foregiveness than it is to ask for permission....

Now you don't have to open the box, you just have to go to some counter and ask specifically for the EULA. Though, what happens if someone gives you the software as a gift? You would now have to go to the store and get the EULA prior to opening the box as the giver of said gift, probably didn't read the EULA...

Not your porn/mp3 collection, but essays/papers/assignements. Servers are in 'server rooms' in locked buildings and are backed up. Your PC probably isn't.

-Get rid of your laptop bag. Get a backpack that is padded for a laptop. You don't want to advertise that you have one.

-Be careful of roommates/suitemates. Unless you know your roommate(s) or suitemates from highschool. Also, you never know who *their* friends are.

-It only takes "a second" to take something. Just like people who leave kids/pets in sweltering cars. ("I was only going into the store for a second..") so might your laptop.

Remember, at the end of the day. Its all common sense, and what would the cost be to replace this stuff.

  17. !options then compensation = salary on Should Companies Expense Stock Options? · · Score: 3, Interesting

I've worked at dotcoms and now a large company which gives out stock options to its employees. Until i joined the large company I didn't realize the value of options (not a get rich scheme).

If companies have to expense options, they'll drop the option programs as the expensing will kill profitability. Therefore companies will nolonger give out options (MSFT has already stopped giving out options), and thus the major $$$ form of compensation will be salary, and salary does not keep an employee at a company for a long time, as you can jump ship to another company easier to get a raise than to ask mgmt.

Plus many companies spend big $$$ repurchasing stock on the market to keep up the stock price.

Lastly, if options are expensed then only the execs will get options and not the workers in the trenches.

Plus the more people the higher the demand for resources (food, gas, land/housing). Plus people tend to want to live on the fringe of society (suburbs..) rather than in cities so population density within the cities is low however the demand for resources is still high (more gas for the 40mile commute, more instructure spent to run gas/phone/electricity to the houses).

  25. Great, like traffic isn't bad enough as it is... on Nano Body Building · · Score: 4, Informative

According to Robert Malthus... His hypothesised that (unchecked) population growth always exceeds the growth of means of subsistence. Actual (checked) population growth is kept in line with food supply growth by "positive checks" (starvation, disease and the like, elevating the death rate) and "preventive checks" (i.e. postponement of marriage, etc. that keep down the birthrate), both of which are characterized by "misery and vice". Malthus's hypothesis implied that actual population always has a tendency to push above the food supply. Because of this tendency, any attempt to ameliorate the condition of the lower classes by increasing their incomes or improving agricultural productivity would be fruitless, as the extra means of subsistence would be completely absorbed by an induced boost in population. As long as this tendency remains, Malthus argued, the "perfectibility" of society will always be out of reach. Can we really deal with a population that lives to be 150? 200? If the earth's populatoin is just over 6Billion... would we sustain a population of 7-8 Billion? I live in the sanjose area and they are buildings/houses on every hill in the area, of which 5 years ago the hills were still covered in grass. And the higher the population, the quicker we consume resources...
