I have a large collection of shn and flac files and keep them converted to alac for use on my iPod. The ALACs usually end up smaller than the flacs. The difference is usually on the 5-10 MB per GB range. That said, I would rather have a quicktime element to handle FLAC files than a non-quicktime ALAC encoder. I've heard the Quicktime addons are hard to write though.

  7. Perhaps a typo on Price Drops For Mac mini Upgrades · · Score: 2, Informative

For tboth configs of the mac mini in the US apple store, the prices of the airport card and BT card are: BT $50, Airport $79, combo $99.
On the UK store for the 1.2ghz the prices are: BT 35.00 UKP, AP 49.00 UKP, and combo 152.88 UKP.
However, the prices for the upgrades on the 1.4 ghz are: BT 35.00 UKP, AP 49.00 UKP, and combo 69.99 UKP.
I think there is a possible typo on the store or something. the 152 UKP price would seem reasonable for the combo BT/APExtreme and an AP Express bundled in, but not for the combo card itself.

Well, I'd buy that except the US Apple store doesn't charge more than the price of the BT and AP modules separately for buying them together. In the US, Bluetooth is $50 Airport extreme is $79, and the combo card is $99.

There are computer based Cruise control systems that are adaptive to slower traffic. There is a Lexus and Mercedes system like that now (I think.) that uses a radar to detect a car in the lane ahead of you and will reduce your speed and keep you back a set number of feet until they change lanes, at which time it will resume your set cruise control speed.

I think it is kind of odd too that Nintendo has kept backwards-compatibility in their portable gaming lineup, but has failed to do so with their consoles. 19. Re:adding in OGG? on Hacking the iPod Firmware · · Score: 1

Doubt it. FLAC & OGG really aren't that popular. I would actually rather see just quicktime support for them. That way, it would be easier to transcode them into more widely used formats for use on the iPod. AAC and ALAC are much easier to play back for lower power devices, are already supported by iPod and iTunes, and ALAC generally takes up less space than FLAC by a good bit.

  20. Re:The real question is about rights on National Library Service Plans Next-Gen Audiobooks · · Score: 2, Informative

It's not for expired copyright works, but rather they are talking about an exemption in copyrighting books that allows libraries to make audiobooks for the blind without paying royalties. The blind do get shafted in a lot of ways, but they are at least allowed to have audiobooks made from copyrighted works. I know that around here there is a group that broadcasts newspapers on radio for the blind and reads books over the radio for the blind. These services are volunteer-run, and seem popular with many elderly people. I wouldn't be suprised if there is a service like the one you are imagining in existence.
