I don't see why it is so shocking that Apple doesn't design their computers from the ground up. They don't design the cpus, memory controllers, ethernet controllers, and the like. I would say that apple really does little more than lay down specs, exterior design, and a few other things. Are they heavily involved with what quantas designs for them? Certainly. Apple is not a semiconductor company any more than Quanta is based out of 1 Infinite Loop.

Okay, so one of the largest and most complex intelligence organizations in the world is dropping $150k on getting a college to make a really complex chat logging system. How lame is that. Shouldn't the CIA have their own people that specialize in this kind of thing? Also, why are they getting the NSF to help fund it? $150000 is peanuts to these folks. They have a $40 billion or so budget. If something is this critical to "national security" doesn't it deserve more than .0004% of your resources?

Just be careful, and make sure you get the right mac for you. It is unwise to be hasty and just go out and buy the cheapest new computer available that runs OS X. I have known a few people who bought a new macintosh computer, only to find it didn't suit their needs. So, consult with your mac zealot and you too can overcome premature eMac-ulation.

  7. Re:LiIon's Roar (or thermal runaway) on More Exploding Cellphones In The News · · Score: 1

Exactly, this is the exact same problem that the original LiIon batteries in powerbook 5300's many years back had. Lithium Ion batteries create large amounts of heat and hydrogen gas when they are overcharged, or even just improperly charged. Their problem was a faulty sony recharging circuit that didn't always stop charging when full. The failure rate is low, but it does have the potential to rise both in frequency and destructiveness with increasing capacity and commoditization of LiIon batteries.

  9. Not so much on Is The 'CSI Phenomenon' Good For Science? · · Score: 1

You know, it is cool that people are getting into science because of these shows, but this does give people a little bit of a skewed view of science. Yes, there are some scientists with jobs that are really that interesting. Also, there are some very capable scientists out there. There even are a few geeky-science types that are as good looking and cool as the ones on TV. The fact of the matter, though is that most scientists are underpaid, underappreciated, overworked, and aren't out there doing groundbreaking work. Yes, I like science and am about to finish up a dual BS in Chemistry & Biology, but I'm doing this because I like it and am good at it. Going into any profession because it seems "cool" and exciting is a bad idea. All the glamour in the world can't make a job fun.

I use the Apple lossless on my iPod. It works really well, and tends to save me a few megs per concert/album over FLAC/SHN. What someone really needs to do though is make a better FLAC/SHN transcoder for Mac OS. Having to convert to AIFF really sucks up HD space with iTunes tendency to make copies of music the first tiem it is played. I wish I could open FLACs in iTunes and convert them straight to ALAC.

That is very thoughtful of you. Apples are a wholesome and tasty treat, but their sugar content makes them inedible for the ever-increasing population of obese youths that are undertaking "carb conscious" dieting plans. Razor blades are not only low in carbs. but are also an excellent source of iron. I applaud you for your efforts in helping win the war against fatness. Hopefully your example will lead many other /.'ers to do the same.

  13. Re:Creepy sounds in my head! on Waterproof MP3 Player Uses Bone Conduction · · Score: 1

You can simulate speaker-type sound quite well with headphones. The way that audio-imaging works in the brain is by measuring differences in volume and time for audio signals to reach the ears. This makes it possible to accurately determine the direction from which a sound is coming as long as the wavelength of the sound is shorter than the distance between the ears (or is it half that distance?). Headroom (www.headphone.com) makes a lot of really nice headphone amps which have circuitry to simulate this effect. It really makes a huge difference in sound quality. I use one with my Sennheiser 600s and it is freakin awesome. Turning your head is a little wierd because the sound moves with it, but this kind of system would eliminate the "creepy sounds in my head" feeling. Check the website for better information regarding their systems.

Having used both, I cannot agree with you really. Yes, the m3 does do a lot of cool stuff, but in the end it did not offer me as intuitive an experience as the iPod. I thought that little clippy-screen thing was about the most annoying display ever. It really makes no sense. Though the iPod is slightly bigger, the m3 takes up more pocket space and is more cumbersome. Also, I thought the lack of good SW integration was a problem. iPod and iTunes just work together, and do so quite well. The file/folder arrangement on the m3 is kind of wierd when you are organizing music. Oh well, I guess the m3 is good if that is what you want out of a music player, but I think the iPod works better for me, and for most other people.
