we really need the shuttle (or whatever *should* be taking over for it by now...) to get back in the game. no more of this dropping pieces of foam to doom the rentry...ugg.
that's always been my point, in europe it wouldn't be a problem, but here...well, it's unknown. hey, we have beer every other fridays now (after my sugestion, nice to have a cool workplace) but just a beer or glass of wine at lunch...still, unknown.
I think I'm going to buy some of those 4 packs of red wine and just have a glass for lunch.
with debian's background it's the perfect linux distro to support things like this. Just use anaconda (open from red hat) for the installer, then apt for updates, have it point to a mirror for the new distro to support newer (yes, less stable) apps for install, and you'll have a great OS, with the structure of Debian, but w/o the upkeep (which I happen to like, but I digress...)
Seriously though, I've always wanted to start drinking a glass of wine or beer with lunch at work. Think about it long term; it would be a health benefit. One beer isn't going to make anyone loopy, and you'd be at your desk or in the kitchen, so you wouldn't be going outside like smokers, plus you'd only do it once a day unlike smokers.
Hmmm...perhaps I should send this article to our HR department...
hopefully the 'human' factor is addressed. You know, passwords like 'password' or the person's initials. The weakest link in the chain has always been the humans...well, save for that time in the 2001 movie, but I digress.
Once the code is out, they can't do anything. Perhaps sue Sun over it, but so what? Even if they sue OO.org, the code is still out there for anyone to fork and develop! It's the freedom that they can't stop.
agreed, but again, the Dell/HP/Gateway commericals all hock 499$ PCs. Grandma isn't going to understand popping down an extra 5-600$ for a computer. Put out a eMac replacement; looks like the new iMacs, but has a G4 (G3?) in it, and get the price down to 500$ or so, then Grandma will be all set.
Amazing what a little opening of the hardware allows for people to do with this little thing that was originally meant to just play music and be a modern day Walkman. Now it's this swiss army knife of the 21st century. With success like this it still boggles the mind that Apple computers don't catch on the same way. Flame me if you will, but if Apple just sold a computer for 600$ I think it would catch fire like the iPod has.
and I thought the iPod was just an mp3 player!;) Seriously, if you watch the development of the device, and consider all of the software being developed for it, it's no wonder Apple isn't running about making another Neuton...in effect, they almost have! I look for the iPod to do a ton more things come January 2005. I for one plan on playing with Linux on mine, then seeing what else I can do with that's cool and new.
As always, see the orig first for the 'full' story: War of the worlds (1953). Will be interesting/weird to see how they update it, special effects non-withstanding.

Ah, the screenshots always kill a webserver don't they;) Here's a mirror of just the screenies for Gnome 2.8: screenshots. Firefox users remember; center-click is yr friend!;)
I'm still happy with the progress Gnome/KDE keep making even though I've moved on to Openbox and/or XFCE4. We need Gnome/KDE for new adopters, truthfully perhaps very few of them will ever want to move to something simplier (or more complicated in their eyes). WIth the HIG ideas of Gnome I think they're leading the way with a consistant and (somewhat) easy to learn desktop.
When I get my mom on Linux, she'll be in Gnome, as I think it'll be the shortest step from WinXP(ee).
cause if they don't, there won't be businesses like: Transfer your Betamax Videos to DVD. this way, when we don't have any more IT jobs, we can convert one DVD types to another DVD types...
What is Amazon trying to achieve with A9.com? The thing I don't like is that all companies are trying to be all things. Apple is a software/hardware/online music store company, HP sells iPods, MS (and everyone else) is hocking an online music store while the orginal ideals are lost.
Can't someone just get good at something and then improve on that? Look at what happened to Google.
Funny you should mention that, I work at a software dev company, we're getting allot of gov contracts (since that's almost all that's out there) and I have an interview with a lady from the DOD next Thursday. It was an interesting call to get early this morn at my desk.
I guess I shouldn't tell her what I *really* think of Tom Ridge or our nation's security...
Any idea how many less jobs are available for new grads? This could have a turnaround effect on college degrees as well, something I don't think our pro-outsourcing President considered.
and outsourcing to other counties doesn't help. ppl need to realize that the IT gravy train is over, it's time to put up or shutup. certificates and degrees no longer hold the water they once did. find a skill, hone it, and hunker down, cause it's going to get windy before there's another round of jobs with the 'wow' factor.
I liked this back when Gentoo did it, and I think this is a great trend; having a completely security minded Linux OS (since BSD has been there forever;))
personally I'm really interested in the Security-Enhanced Linux that the NSA is working on. To have something that complete is really intriquing. Now if they don't have something like apt to keep it steady I dunno...but you have to admit it's got 'wow' factor written all over it!
this reminds me of the old VCR tapes, the ones you could get that were just of burning logs, or of a fish aquairum; it would look like you had something you didn't. of course back then the tech wasn't nearly what it was today, so a window of a strange outdoor scene could produce the needed 'wow' factor that previously was unattainable.
I haven't run windows at home for 2 years, but I still have to talk to my mom, and her neighbors 1000 miles away cause they have Dell's with XP! regardless of what I've done from here their machines just get overrun with viruses or trojans. I've installed spybot, they have Mccafee running (supposedly) and now this.
I really wish my mom would get broadband so I could install/admin linux from here.

I can't believe the poll numbers are right, the fact that Bush is even in the running makes me loose whatever pride I had in our great country.
Also, here's a fun fact, so far this month we've had MORE deaths from terrorist attacks since 911, and the second most EVER!
Meanwhile Bush stumps with "American and the world are safer!"
Huh? Everyone, please VOTE!
