My preference is Avira. The free version is great if you can tolerate the popup every time you boot up. I hardly use windows so its not a big deal for me.
The point is though, if Apple's patents could shut down Microsoft's core business- Windows and Office, then it's still going to put Apple in a position where they can force concessions out of Microsoft.
mate if that ever happens I'm gonna smash every computer I own and drive a truck. I cant imagine anything worse for IT as a whole than Apple being in the dominant position Microsoft is in now. Vendor lock-in anyone? We'd be begging for Microsoft to come back...
meh - I dont understand all of this. Are you speaking from experience or are you quoting all of the FUD that exists on the net about this? I cant understand how one device (nexus one) can work well with 2.1 and another can be buggy, and yet its somehow the a fault of android. To me, if 1 phone works well with android, they all should - otherwise its a manufacturer fault (faulty hardware and/or drivers).
I've got a HTC magic - still running 1.6 and I've yet to come across any of these supposed incompatibilities. I've browsed the Android Market a lot and I'm not sure what you mean by "fragmentation". There's just a lot of apps - I only use the ones with high ratings, and give feedback where its necessary. Its a great self-sustaining model, and it "works for me".
The API's are all (supposed to be) forward-compatible. If something breaks - it should be a fault of the app developer. The only exception is if there is a bug in the API implementation - but this would be evident across all phones which support that API.
As far as the API model goes, I cant see a problem with it. As long as google implements it properly - there should be no issue. All software written for 1.5 should work on 2.0 and 2.1 without a hassle. I've certainly not had any issues with stuff not running properly.
I've also developed my own app and I'm really impressed by the SDK and also how well the app performed on my phone.
i've never experienced any incompatibilities on my phone. maybe i'm just lucky?
from the summary: "to achieve a capture rate of 200 pages per minute. You just quickly flip the book pages in front of the system and it digitizes the pages..."
whoa...how useful is the ability to capture 200 pages per minute if you have to turn the pages yourself?
I realise that works out to 1 physical page turn every half a second - but how long can you keep that up for? and you have to do that for the entire book?
It is possible to disagree with someone, or attempt to point out some information you think that person might not have, without dropping to the level of insult.
haha now not only do you not own the music, you no longer have a license either...the only thing you own is the paper the license is printed on...soon they'll be able to come and take that too.
Look out when the car and housing industries find out...they might like the idea too. see how silly it sounds in the context of real objects? When will the digital industries wake up to themselves? does it really need take this long...?
we're only JUST now seeing the end of DRM in music...surely this stuff can end soon.
Actually I think they ARE just american companies whose products are bought, used, and viewed all around the world.
and yes, we hate them. but the hatred is more for the company and what their actions stand for, than the american-ness. wouldn't matter if they were from mars...
"You know why alcoholics always drink in a group? To make sure nobody quits." -- Mark Cunningham
This comes across wrong. Its not that anyone in the group is making sure no one else quits, its the fact that any one person will feel left out if they do quit. They'll keep going because otherwise they'd miss the social interaction and would feel like they weren't part of the group any more.
I've seen this every day at my work in the context of smoking. Its exactly the same. People who tried and tried to quit, with all kinds of gum, tablets, etc, failed first time every time when SOMEONE ELSE asked if they were coming outside for a smoke. They were fine under their own strength. And in some cases there were smokers convincing them to come and join them for a smoke - using all the excuses they used on themselves. Its hard to watch as an outsider looking on. I dont know what its like so there's little I can say to help, but watching someone fall day after day and then stop trying is just wrong. I believe in essence what it means is that a person's desire to smoke is more than their desire to live. Eventually, they would rather take the easy road, knowing it is also the shorter one.
If you're an addict to anything harmful, be it smoking, alcohol, games whatever, do something about it before you reach this stage. before your family/friends desert you, and before you desert yourself.
I believe the defaults should be set to the most private setting, and allow users to SHARE their stuff. Facebook does it the other way round, they say all your stuff is public unless you specifically disallow it. How is that fair? Its an open abuse of people's right to privacy, and for the (hopefully brief) time between the change and when the user realises and updates their privacy settings, facebook has had a field day with your personal details.
Is it a long shot to assume that most people use bing ONLY after google fails to give them good results?
Its very difficult to compare search engines as apples and apples. The results can always be skewed one way or the other. They assume people only use 1 but not the other, but many people will use both, they just might use them for different amounts of time or for different things.
Its similar to the question of "what is life?". Just making blood pump through a dead animal does not make it come alive. What exists in our brain to make us "conscious".? Its more than just logic and machine-like things. Its more than just a complex programmable organ.
We have the ability to "learn" and we have the ability to question ourselves, etc. We also have something that even animals do not - the ability to think "morally". We have "free will". And we have an imagination.
Exploring the brain will not uncover the secret to life. The brain is just an organ, like any other. Sure its more complex, but just having a brain and pumping blood through it does not create life.
Its a very good question. However I do not find the possibility of a God scary. That option is actually a LOT more comforting than if there isn't one. If we're fully responsible for our own destiny, then THAT is scary.
I come to /. to read tech news...
you must be new here
whoa - you're making apple fans seem indifferent.
nah seriously - its not a bad product by all accounts i've read.
http://www.av-comparatives.org/ is the place to go for reviews on anti-virus software.

if only microsoft made cars...
Yes, the people who prefer not to have a physical keyboard are called iPhone users.
Don't look now, but there are millions of us.
I am an Android Phone user, not an iPhone user you insensitive clod!
Perhaps you'd like to talk about something else?
I am Dr Sbaitso. Tell me your problems.
man hasn't "(re-)invented" it yet, and isn't likely to for a long time to come.
You must be lost

when "players" are so involved in a fantasy game that their real life takes second place, or no place at all, how is that not an addiction?
yeah yeah i'm expecting a "whoosh" in the next reply...
Whats this App Store you speak of?

or that they went BACK ONTO THE INTERNET to post about it...did it even work?
hehe, I bought the deluxe model.
