It was Nobel's will that the Nobel peace price be given "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity among nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses". Exactly that seems to be the case with Obama, with his speeches across the world. Next year may be too late by Nobel's strict definition.

If I say, "I'll give to x$ if you build this feature into the game", that's voting rights. If the developers are uncertain which option would work best, why not ask the community? They know best what they want. We're not necessarily talking about fundamental changes here. However, a developer could certainly be rated regarding the openness of his development process, with judgments from "Doesn't stick to votes anyway" to "Sticks to what was agreed" and "Gets everything right without asking". This could start on Steam soon. You start by buying a core game package and get to vote for added content with your payments. If not enough money gets raised, payments should return to the investor/buyer.

  5. Requirements? on Valve's Newell On Community-Funded Games · · Score: 4, Interesting
If I were to invest in game development, I would require the following:

    1. Access to a weekly build. I want a full build of the current game status, not a reduced-functionality demo. This is necessary because if game development would stop, I would still have something. The extreme programming technique could be used to reduce the risk of loss in investment.

    2. Ability to request changes. If I invest in a game, this should give me a certain degree of voting rights.

    3. As long as money is invested in the game, development should continue. When a game developer wants to stop supporting a game, he should stop people from investing in it.

    4. Online platform. Ongoing projects should be listed on a service like ebay.

In particular for game topics neglected by the big publishers, this would open up ways for newcoming game developers to implement ideas from and for communities with special interests. While I think this would be a welcome change, many people will prefer buying games without risking loss of investment. If trolls are kept in check, I think the game development process could work in a very open way.

  8. Graphics vs. game depth on LucasArts To Re-Release Old Games Through Steam · · Score: 1

I'm a sucker for good graphics found in many modern games, but they often lack the depth found in the older LucasArts titles.

From http://www.joystiq.com/2009/07/06/discover-the-secret-of-monkey-island-again-on-july-15/ (cited in the summary):
"The Secret of Monkey Island: ... rendered in splendid HD graphics, surrounded by newly recorded voices ..."

That does sound like a worthwhile update.

I would welcome the campaigns and scenarios of the Star Wars space sims being ported to a newer engine, even if it is only Star Wars Alliance's.

Note also that publishing games through Steam will delay their becoming abandonware, which is good for the seller, but bad for the public if the games are just re-released without brushing up.

Sony has an update service for their hardware, but it covers only Sony apps and device drivers. I am convinced this can be implemented in an anti-trust-free manner. The update servers do not need to be run by Microsoft, software should just set a flag in the repository, "Please check server x every y hours for updates and install them (after prompting user)". Likewise, most installers only copy a few files and install some registry settings. If Windows was aware of these lists, it could check if uninstalls went cleanly and remove software from its list even after failed uninstalls.

Updating programs should be part of the Windows operating system, just as installing should be. I prefer the centralized solutions for this found in Linux distributions, where one program in the operating system is responsible for installing and updating all others, rather than each program needlessly implementing the same services again and again. On the other side, Microsoft appears to be busy enough just releasing their optimized Vista build, called "Windows 7".
