I don't want global nuclear war, I like society, but if war did happen, one of it's very few benefits would be a shrinking of government overloads, a chance to rid us of waste and corruption, government on a scale people could understand. ok. The cell phone companies have announced they are going to price fix their rates up %15 among all good US carriers. Sense they own and built the networks, they do what they want right? Also, the restaurants on the east side of town have decided only to let white people eat there, because they own the property, and set the rules right? Breaking news, you can't drive through 3 of the cities near you anymore to get to work because your not a resident and didn't pay for the road upkeep. Enjoy driving around on federal roads parent poster. Also cereal and grain no longer has to be shipped in poison free food grade containers, because they own the grain till they sell it, they can store it how they want.

These are extreme examples but reasonable regulation that leans towards favoring the citizens while not fucking the investors is absolutely required. Especially if you are talking about anything that leans towards a 'natural monopoly' like infrastructure. Free markets don't work with things like water pipes because you can't have 5 didn't companies running pipes all over the city to every house. And even if you did, (say you built a star trek water transporter beam) you'd still need safety regulation.

Yes, a lot of them do this now. but without real motivation to work, you will remove the work ethic from them. Suddenly new tech isn't made fast enough, but you don't realize it till 15 years later. So many entry lvl positions just want a 4 year degree, in the field or not. I don't see many posts about "I went bankrupt from my student loans and now share a apartment with 3 strangers" I think it's mostly the perceived stress from the loans that bring this talk about. Not being a Aussie I have little commant on how this would work, but just because it didn't last here, doesn't mean they couldn't find a way to prevent a repeat there. Plus I think you forget how bad Ma bell was. Try thinking of the DMV from hell that has no offices, you have to call.

Also, the break up did what was intended, stopped it from monopolizing the computer industry (it tried) and other emerging techs. You could argue without the break-up Sprint could have never got into the long distance service, and Verizon started in 1983 as Bell Atlantic. It is possible, if left to stand, Ma Bell would have wrapped up most of the cell phone market before said competitors giving at least some market competition today. Just a thought.
