No, I'm not suggesting anything I'm generally curious - can a system built using Linux, Apache, Mysql and PHP scale to serve 100m hits? And if not, why not. But also what would do that scaling?
The suggestion was that it can't - but is that just a come down on the people that install LAMP on their spare box and think that makes them a web developer. Or actually, was the post flamebait.
It really depends where that energy is coming from though - my car has an "intelligent" alternator that
a) Turns itself off when not needed b) Only charges above 80% when that "free" energy is available - for example when braking or when using the gears to slow down.
What would be interesting, is using all the wasted heat that an engine produces to create extra power.
I think you're wrong about the bottom up approach - it has to be top down, and it has to be enforced. If the data has su value that it cannot be taken off site, then thems the rules. If your users break the rules then they should know they will be disciplined. Telling user that "you won't do this" means very little to the user, they'll just do it because they can.
If you've got the correct security in place, the CFO won't be fired for using his thumb drive because he won't be able to. If the CFO then needs to use his thumb drive the CEO will support you in rejecting said want.
If work needs to be taken home, then the channels have to be in place for doing so.
1) Get senior management support 2) Diasble all USB ports on all computers 3) All users to run as "Users" and not local administrator 4) Use GPO to diasble auto install of USB devices 5) Use GPO to deny all programs unless authorised (Not often used, but in windows you can stop a logged on domain user from running any programs whatsoever, including explorer) 6) Install Proxy that "denies" all webistes except approved one 7) Pissed off users, but more secure network. Senior management support you, so flack directed to them:-)
The Silmarillion is a story that spans thousand of year with casts of hundreds - some of which are mentioned only a couple of times though they crop up at major times. There's also the problem (that I find) of many names being similar - Finrod, Fingon, Fingolfin, Finarfin.
But, I would say two things - get a Middle Earth Glossary and persevere.
The Silmarillion is a magnificent collection of legands of middle earth - full of love, honour, betrayal, greed, power, sadness, despair and hope.
Thats a really poor example, and I expect if you tried to "sell" your colouring book in a gallery your "ordinary expected use" would like not be upheld.
Power stations do not have to be "coal", gas, nuclear, wind, wave, hydro or wahtever. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if parts of California would work fairly well with Solar...
Electricity shouldn't be a "resticted" resource as such - it's a fundemental part of modern life in the west, and one of the resources we have the ability to produce and transmit. The problem is in the "privitised" sector there is no reason at all to increase capacity, shareholders do not benefit in any way and such a large investment that would take so long to see any returns would never be accepted. This is when idea of putting controlled themestats comes in, the costs are bourne by the user and not the shareholder/owner.
People already pay "more" for electricity if they run AC, why should people who don't use AC have to pay more to punish those that do?
Could you not argue that by using a computer program you are copying it?
ie
When you install it, you copy it to your hard drive when you "run" it you copy into memory, or it's copied to virtual memory If you hibernate, the whole lot is copied to hard drive
etc
I think in US copyright "if in the normal coures of operation" then there is an exception. The UK and probably most EU countries do not have that, so in theory you need a licence to run the software.

I work in a school and I have had no "major" (ie a service unavailable for more than a day, and that was exchange) downtime in nearly three years - okay it's only 1300 students so not a mega school. Mayeb IT provision isn't very important at your university? Then you need to get on the student council or whatever and do somthing about it.

I think you're wrong on this - many games on both tape and disk were "multi loads". Usually they would load new, especially on tape, "levels" for example Gauntlet, other would load "Game Data" (ie pictures) The Bards Tale III on disk for example.
One of the biggest "multiloads" would have been the "Games Series" - Winter Games, Summer Games, California Games, World Games.
I had a laptop with a broken hardrive. I stripped the whole thing down to replace it - CD Out, Floppy out, battery out, RAM out, all "hatches" open, undid case, removed monitor, removed shielding, motherboard off, every single screw taken out.
No harddrive.
Picked the CDRom up, and the hardrive was attached to it.
I have a tick list of about 15 jobs - hecking servers, checking databases etc. Most of these checks are also automated, so I could probably forgo my list but it means I have a structured routine first thing.
Also means if I am not in I know the technicians have also checked this list.
I then have a coffee and comment on slashdot:-). It's now 08:33.
I agree that it's strange that SWOS is on there - not becasue it doesn't deserve to be, but because it's US based list. (likwise if a Europe based list, I would be as surprised to see "American Football" or baseball on it)
SWOS, for it's time was fantastic, slick, fast gameplay, stats coming out of your ears with pretty much every football(soccer) playing country and player covered, management of your team (purchasing players etc). I also think it got converted to nearly evey console available at the time.
I remember playing FIFA around the same time on the 3DO and it didn't hold a candle to SWOS.
I watched a program in a real life auction were an auctioneer did this - made up the bids. It's called "off the wall" bidding and is perfectly legal if the price is under the reserve.
(1) : incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result
Expected result) Microsoft release a destop OS, that their own recommended desktop database server runs on. Actual Result) Microsoft release a desktop OS, that their own recommended desktop database server doesn't run on
It happens everywhere. Where I used to live, someone wrote into the local paper complaining about the local council throwing furniture in skips, that would eventually be put in landfill sites.
The councils responce to this wasn't to look at how furniture could be recycled, but to buy covers for the skips so people couldn't see what was in them.
My first thought were, "Whats so cool about a console emulator? Really a vt100 emulator isn't that interesting."
Probably because I've just been searching through wires to find a null modem cable so I can hook up to a 4400 switch through the console port. *Note to self, put stickers on wires so I can quickly find a null modem cable in a box of serial cables.
Just had a look at that webiste, it's amazing the different tranlations.
Lets just take the last line...

So which part of Lamp won't go to 100m a day?
Is it the "L", the "A", the "M" or the "P"
Or do you just mean the whole "LAMP" roll up, but their fine if put together in a custom type way (database on differnent servers, load balancing etc)

No, they'll understand why these security measures are in place because you've explained it, given them options and shown what the damage can do.

It will take you 10 readings to see it all.
So, what happens in "auto trader" which you buy from the shop that has pictures in of fords for sale in the small adds section?

They should be building more power stations.
Except shareholders are unlikely to accept a 30 year return of investment.

> but the war is lost as we lost control of the country - and then lost the hearts and minds of the people
I think you have that wrong, the coalition never had the hearts and minds of the people so there was never any control of the country.

Nothing illegal about it.
Hmm, I think you are wrong. I have an "upgraded" XP version, and it does not require an installed OS on the computer being upgraded.
And infact it didn't require a "key" from the old version.
It did require the previous version OS CD though, which made me hunt about for a while trying to find win93se a few weeks ago.
