I agree with your point of view... part of the reason the police get so jaded and unresponsive to smaller crimes is that THERE IS SO MUCH CRIME. If people in general would get their acts together and NOT COMMIT CRIMES, then there wouldn't be as much reason to say "F*ck the Police!".
Remember, it's not the cop's fault that there's so much crime. It's everyone's fault for not creating a decent society to live in. That's the real problem, and there's no easy solution that one person can spout off. This problem actually requires WORK and EFFORT.
Bah. It's much easier to say Fuck the Police.
Fuck the Police./me goes back to searching the web for pr0n.
Would designing a non-allergic human be more or less ethical than allergen free kittens? In my opinion, I think designing humans is better than designing everything to suit humanity. But then that also raises it's own problem.
I'm stumped, I'm not really sure which people would consider worse? How do you feel?
Not that I agree with insults as a method of debate, public ridicule is a very effective way for officials to notice that they're doing something very wrong. I think it's absolutely necessary for the majority of people to have reasoned debate, but having a small minority of jerks out there doing name calling can be a sobering wake-up call. If you're a politician, there's always a dull background noise of crazies calling you names... If that background noise suddenly turns to a roar, it's a sure sign you're doing something that is if not wrong, at least bad for your re-election chances.
"The real question of course is: what is it that they really don't want us to notice while they mount this ridiculous distraction?"
What they really don't want people to notice, is that any proprietary versions of *NIX will vanish. Sun is next. Once all powerful corporate closed source flavours of unix vanish, Trusted Computing / Palladium will take care of the free stuff. There will only be one player left.
You must not understand the Big Bang theory that well, if you include it with the others. The Big Bang theory is quite a departure, in that it explicitly says there is no "preferred" location in the universe. The universe is expanding away from us equally in all directions, but this statement is true for all points in the universe, not just Earth. Everything is receding from everything, and there is no preferred centre.
So how does the Big Bang theory fit in, in your understanding?
I totally agreed with you. If my boss were required to take an exam and pass a test before being allowed to use her computer, then my life would be so much easier. There's only so many times over the years a person can take repeatedly explaining the difference between "save" and "save as" every few weeks.
You obviously havn't bought some of their cordless varieties. I returned mine after a week because it had a hard time connecting, and was not nearly accurate enough for the work I do. I went with Logitech, and have been happy ever since. But I do admit, the old MS Mice were workhorses, but MS's current fare is crap.
Unless Slashdot has a dead tree version published daily somewhere, and an address where you can mail in "Letters to the Editor", I find your question rather strange.
And regardless of if you know or not, you're still responsible, legally and/or criminally.
If that is true, explain why every owner and operator of every ISP and phone company in the civilized world isn't already in jail? Their computers undeniably carry child porn on their usenet servers.
Seeing as I can put a serial-ATA or a serial-SCSI drive on a serial SCSI bus...
What is the exact technical difference between a serial ATA and a serial SCSI drive? I read somewhere that the only difference between IDE drives and SCSI drives are the interfaces and electronics, while the actual storage mechanisms are identical. So if both can now work on a SCSI bus, what the heck is the difference between ATA and SCSI???
I've had the same problem with my Toshiba laptop. Some time before christmas, a new driver for my laptop's sound card appeared on Windws Update. I installed it, and it made all music coming from my laptop suddenly sound like crap, and extremely low quality. I've got a Satellite 2600 c500, which has exceptional sound, and even includes a half-decent "subwoofer" port on the bottom, which when used, surprises most people that it's a laptop that's making that quality sound.
Rolling back the drivers didn't work either. It still sounded like crap no matter what I did. I finally had to wipe out all sound info, and re-install current drivers from the Toshiba web site.
Windows update is handy, but it's not always very smart.
I'm sure as windmills gain more popularity, and governments get used to regulating them, this will be addressed one way or another. Some windmills do heat their blades, as can be seen at this page: http://www.vtt.fi/ene/tuloksia/tulosta/exergywind. pdf
It's not a complete solution, as other windmill projects are going ahead near populated areas without this technology, like here: http://www.jsonline.com/news/ozwash/oct00/wind1210 1100a.asp
And the question is, how well can they be trusted. If a blade breaks, you could easily have them flying large distances. Also electrical problems in a stiff wind can electrify the ground, affecting animals and humans, or cause grass fires.
I think windmills are great, but there's still a lot of engineering work that needs to be done, and standards that have to be put in place so it's done properly. I look forward to it. Till then, I'd be leery of living close to a windmill in cold weather. There's also the noise pollution issue, they sound like jet engines, and are about as loud.
Have you ever seen ice buildup slough off of the blades of a large wind generator in bad weather? It's deadly. The area around wind farms can be used for other functions, but there are times of the year where it's advisable to stay very far away from them.
Maybe I'm slow, but I havn't found a way to do batch file transfers with HTTP. There's just no way to do it without clicking on every single damn link, selecting "save as", and then downloading. Sure you can generally get several going at once, it's still not the same as selecting several folders and doing a batch transfer in my FTP client. Or is are there apps or methods of doing this for HTTP?
Actually the poster did not miss the point. Everyone is taking this to the extreme, comparing it to theft from the company on one end, and from the other side, saying that genetic patents should be abolished.
The government of Ontario takes neither of these extremes. Their opinion is that if a company ABUSES their patent, and it harms the public good sufficiently, then the government has the right to ignore that patent.
There's enough posts in Slashdot about companies abusing patents, and here's a posting about a government doing something about it.
The message the Ontario government is sending to companies is not your extrememe "Companies can't profit off of their discoveries." Not at all. They're saying "Companies better be fair with how they profit from their patents, or those rights will be taken away."
In my opinion, appreciation of this movie is directy proportional to intellectual capacity.

Review: Solaris
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
I just came home from watching Solaris, and here's what I have to say about it.
To me, it seemed like the kind of movie that humanity will appreiciate more a long time from now, when we're much more mature as a race. This movie is deep, it stimulates us to think about what we really are as humans. Most of the people I know aren't used to anything beyond the depth of "Die Another Day." Maybe that's why the reviewer mentioned that movie as a contrast. There's some deep intellectual stuff going on in this movie, and all the quiet times are there for the viewer to reflect and think.
If you're not used to thinking, then this movie definately will suck for you. I thought it was well worth the price. Go, make up your own mind, and if it sucks for you, ask for your money back. They'll usually give it.
Thermite on the Hindendburg's skin is chemically similar to Aluminum Perchlorate.

Strength issues? What's the chances that aerogel can withstand supersonic air pressure?

Well, so far with $50 billion, the coolest that he's achieved is...
Windows XP
Office XP
Xbox
Various server and programming apps.
Misc. acquired companies, and other apps, some random feel-good philanthropy.
Sorry if I disagree with you, but compared to the above, a moon colony would top the list of the cool things he's done in his life.

I got that off of a quick google search here: http://www.saintmarys.edu/~rtarara/ENERGY_PROJECT/ wind.htm
But looking at it again, I can see no sources in the paper, so I may very well be talking out my ass about this.
Actually you're right, they are not nearly as loud. But a large wind farm can very likely put out as much noise energy as a single engine.

Purging sales records is one way to get a government agency off your back. Unless it's the IRS.
I wonder if the management has thought through all the implications of their new policy.
