I wish you were right, but you are completely wrong, in a very real sense.
you can try to patch a broken system, like win3 brought to win98 and then brought upwards still. at some point, you have to THROW THE WHOLE THING OUT and restart it.
yes, I mean that. exactly what I mean. nothing less will give us the results we want.
there's only semantics diffs between russia and the US, or the UK and the US, when it comes to this very human-need to snoop on our fellow man and control, Control, CONTROL him.
we used to make jokes about 'we dont do this, we are not russia' but we have become the stereotypical 'russians'. minor details vary, but the theme is 100% identical.
a week ago, I was at a store that was giving away american flags for the 4th of july. I looked at them, thought to myself 'I have no pride in the US anymore, why would I want to boast about being american, these days? we are no better than anyone else, truth be told, and everything I was taught about the US, as a kid, were lies'.
I walked past the table of flags and I have to tell you, it was not a pleasant thought to think what my country has become, over the last 20 years. I was never a flag-waver before, but the very thought of being proud of ourselves makes me feel quite conflicted. yes, there are some things we do well, but with so many lies and so much corruption, I just don't feel the same about my country anymore.
with sim cards being easy to buy, its not hard to change your number often.
I've gotton on some prank lists where I was getting nuissance calls.
I dropped that number. buh-BYE. end of story.
phone is not even the main channel of comms anymore. 20 yrs ago it was. today, everyone has a more perm email and phone numbers can, and do, change. I'm and older guy and even I am ok with throwing away phone numbers and restarting, should I get on a 'annoy this guy by calling and not taking no' list.
we can also have devices that whitelist and let ring thru. when I had a landline, I used modem callerid and a unix daemon. now, most people just have cell phone #'s and the app I use is 'mrnumber' (yeah, lol). it lets me put a select switch between calls and me.
this is what it comes to. like online ads, its a war and we users are left to fend for ourselves. at least we now have good tools to defend ourselves from.
the part about the gov granting itself more rights, yeah, well, that's fully expected given the trajectory the US (and ROW) is headed. sad but its not unexpected. and since we have no control over our gov's (no one, anywhere in the world, does) we are stuck with what they all grew into. this crap where the system rewards itself and cares nothing about the people, themselves.

can't you post a credible link? a religious rag? seriously??
3.7v is nominal, 4.2 is a typical max for charging. 3.3 is typical for cutoff, 3.0 is typical for LOW cutoff. some cutoffs are even set lower than 3, which I find quite shocking (forgive the pun).
if you find a battery that is more than 3.7v and uses lithium, its a true battery, meaning its comprised of CELLS and each cell is the 3.7v unit
I keep hearing 'the terrorists have won' but lets examine that for a bit.
who actually won, here? the terrorists? (such a large group; ie, anyone who hates the US? at times, that seems to be the definition that many idiots use). what have they won? satisfaction? power? money? control?
they have not won very much. its not them that wins from all this.
its own own people. more specifically, our own psychopaths and sociopaths (ie, politicians, authoritarians, control freaks) that have 'won'. they have personal pleasure from spying on us and holding power over us. sometimes there is money involved, too, but it seems its more about ego and power than anything else. and for some, its a matter of not knowing what else to do, to show you are 'doing something' and so you clutch onto meaningless things like this.
the terrorists are not ruining our society. we are doing it entirely on our own, and its happening world-wide.
in engineering, the term is 'thermal runaway' and that's what we are seeing. an out of control ruling class that won't give up their witch hunts and likes this new 'game' that they spend so much time playing. nothing is ever enough; they'll want more and more info, more and more access, more and more restrictions on us.
but its not the foreign terrorists that have won. its our own selfish ruling or mid-ruling class that has found a new game to play and it seems the sick-o's are truly enjoying it, like the stanford prisoner experiments. its legalized harassment with the thinnest excuse imaginable.
I hope the next generation that comes into power realizes this and tries to reverse it. I have a lot of doubts, though, as people are people, now or 10,000 years ago. our nature has some dark sides to it and the 'enjoyment' we as a species get from torturing and manipulating our own kind is what will finally put an end to our whole species.
modded up and yet, posted as AC (my parent poster).
see, kind of proves it even more. many people don't even want to have a pseudonym, they go that extra bit to post as AC.
when people feel like they need to hide that extra level for something that should not be even a casual worry, you know your country has gone too far off the deep end.
I hope the world can unwind and get back to normal again. someday.
as has been said many times, 'they' only need to win once and we need to win 100% of the time or we lose our liberties.
I really didn't ever think I'd see the US, my home country, turn into this kind of attack on freedom and privacy.
then again, I have to keep reminding myself, this is a human thing and we see this all over the world. I could list a dozen countries that are also attacking their citizens in this way.
I wonder how we solve a HUMAN problem? in fact, I have my doubts we can. this may well be the trigger that ends our world (yes, dramatic statement, but all signs are that the world is giving up on itself and doubling down on the derp, as the kids say, today). the disease of anti-liberty is infecting the whole world and the holdouts are losing. we are losing.
not pleasant thoughts, I know. but again, we have to win 100% of the attacks on our freedoms, and they only need to win once and once a law is enacted, its near impossible to fix it later. it can easily be too late by the time we realize what we have done to ourselves.
files saved on my nas, reachable via wired and wifi at home, played by via rasp pi players (recent i2s sound cards are pretty good).
one thing that I am glad I did; there was a short time I was listening to streaming music that I discovered via the old logitech slimserver stuff. I found some nice background music that was low key and worth having for various reasons.
I found a ripper - 'streamrip' - and it would sit there on a network stream (of the right type) and pretty well id the songs and name them as separate.mp3 files in a folder you pointed it to. let it run for days or weeks and come back to scoop up all the files. you then find so many dupes, too! but that's also kind of funny - you see what they 'played' lots of.
the best part of the CSB is: since I saved them, I have them. weeks worth. I would not notice if such a long playlist repeated a song. and you guessed it, the 'station' went off the air and now its gone, gone for good, most likely.
I have thousands of songs from that 'station' and its great bg 'working' music. if I had simply trusted the cloud, I'd have nothing now. instead, I grabbed mirror copies and I'm in good shape.
its also why I run youtube-dl to view YT videos. if its worth watching, I will save a local copy and watch from that.
And the reason I'd give is 'I don't think I can trust you'.
funny, I say that to companies that I have to deal with as a consumer, such as comcast (for an example). I don't give them my home #, or I give a number that I used to have but let expire. I won't give them my cell # since I don't trust them not to abuse it. I don't have a landline anymore (most people don't) and I'm NOT going to give out my real actual cell # to some company who just seems to 'really want it'. if I have a problem, I'll call you. I don't need you calling me. again, I DON'T TRUST YOU.
so, say that. let them get used to hearing it. maybe it will sink in.
we stopped trusting you, mr. big corp. you don't get my real email addr and you don't get my cell phone #. you get my billing addr and other billing info, but you do not get the right to call me.
some school asking to store healthcare info would get the same reply. we don't trust you. nothing personal, but you - as an industry - are not trustworthy. sorry. no can do. maybe talk to little bobby tables, his parents might be ok with having his data online. do you need his number?
nice attempt at trying to turn it around (not the poster, the article).
having to give a reason is so backwards! they should have a good reason TO put it online.
my answer would be flat out 'no'. period. full stop.
if they insist on an answer why, simply say 'I have some background in computer security, that's why'.
doubtful they will push further than that.
amazing that some people that you'd think would be smart, suggest such bone-headed ideas.
have we not had almost a weekly break-in news article about this or that data breech?
just WHY would anyone suggest putting med info online - its clearly because they stand to make money from it, but they could care less if data gets out.
now, make them $1M liable for any breech and we'll talk. and I want the money in escrow, first, before I believe you.
nice try, but the system won't allow 3rd parties.
I wish you were right, but you are completely wrong, in a very real sense.

you will have medical problems.
eventually.
we all do.
its a fact. and you won't admit it but its still a fact that us older guys know.
almost no one goes thru life 'perfect'. our medical history is OUR history and that's that. you may not think so now, but you will later.

here's your problem, pally. you had the mode switch set to EVIL.
"in soviet seattle, dash button presses you!"

last entry on the last is little bobby tables.
(wow, our sql query sure runs fast, today. did you do an optimize or something?)
'kind' is slang.
kind veggie burrito is a phrase often heard, back in the day, in the parking lot scene at dead shows.
people in the scene know what 'kind' means. often, the phrase is 'kind bud'.
either way, blood flows.
doctor jimmy?
when I'm pilled, I don't notice him.
Are you trying to put them down, just because they get around?
I can't explain.
just tell me, again, why I would care what some aging band has to say about coffee?
yeah, well, it still can't whip the llama's ass...
I want to live long enough to see us do fly-bys over the surface of mars, scaring the locals and then having a radio show written about us.
once that happens, I can die a happy man.
