I know I haven't posted here in awhile, but this story just "hit" me at the wrong time. I am so sick and tired of this mentality where everyone seems so greedy to always look how to "get over" on others to profit.

First off, there have been MANY artists over time using the same or similar styles. Should all the art that has been inspired by Picasso be destroyed?

I am very sure that Miro's "style" was inspired by others.

If we follow this example then we will have no or few new artists/art.

On a Lighter but serious note.. My style of web design is to have a menu located on the left side of the browser with pop-up submenus via mouse rollover. Perhaps I should sue ARS for using My style without permission - LOL

From reading the patent, It appears to Me that this patent was on a method of installing CPU upgrades to a computer. For example those cards that took a 386 to a 486 or allowed you to exchange the CPU for a faster one and increase the clock speed. These types of cards are about useless anymore! Besides, this patent was applied for in 1993 - I am VERY sure there is prior art. I can remember these types of upgrades as early as 1986. Hell, NEC was offering upgrades as early as 1981, albeit not this type, but it DID upgrade the CPU and increase the clock speed. It was that old V20 CPU and a clock crystal to upgrade your 8088 PC and increase the clock from 4.77mhz to 8mhz. (Hmm.... I* wonder who else on here actually used one of those besides Me?)

It'll be interesting to see how this playes out, but seems to me that this is a poor attempt by a company that has no market anymore to get a few quick bucks. --- Hey, I wonder if any SCO people are thier relatives ?!?

This person's point is well made and the post should be modded up to 5 as "Hitting The Nail On The Head". I know people in the U.S. don't see it but these observations are correct. It does miss a few points however.

First - In the beginning of IT people got into the field becasue they loved it not to get the high paying job and have a "cushy", high profile, and envied career. After about late 80's we have had TONS of people become "developers" that really aren't interested in the field, they went looking for the "quick buck". Now we have an industry with way too many people and the number of jobs has diminished. Therefore... supply and demand... the wages drop drastically.

Secondly, Every country's economy isn't fully prepared for globalization. Why? Because wages, quality of work, and international laws haven't been fully defined. An example... A Company outsources thier next generation misson critical application to some 3rd world country to save the almighty dollar. This application's design is innovative and will give them a compatitive edge over thier competitors. Now, the project either doesn't deliver on time, or ,even worse, the development firm turns and uses the codebase to "develop" the same application for one or more competitors. If it was developed inside the Company's country, no problem - lawsuits, payments, penalties, etc. - in other words a defined method to correct the problem. With outsourcing it outside the Company's country - those abilities are gone. Now, how much did the Company save after those losses ?? Probably ends up costing them more than it would have to do the project locally(inside thier country) in the first place. Other issues, time differences, language barriers, etc. How many CIO/CTOs are going to be on a conference call at midnight because it is 10am at the development site ???
Outsoucing IT was done before in the U.S. albeit was done locally in the mid to late 80s. It didn't work well then either, mainly because of the "how" at that time. Most companies turned to a single software company to "modify" existing applications or to "extend" them into a larger system and those software companies( Microsoft, IBM, Lotus, etc.) only exposed the customer to thier own applications.

I know this is slightly offtopic, but I was reading comments and just realized something...

Each Mailbox will be able to hold 1GB of email. Each Email can be 10MB. What happens when gmailboxes become noting more than the equivalent of alt.binaries filled with software. No longer will the pirate/warez users have to worry about running ftp servers, P2P, Usenet, etc. Google will be the ones holding the goods and there will be a ton of gmailboxes setup for the sole purpose of warez sharing. Once this draws google's attention - *poof* either it will be gone or the max mailbox/attachment limit will be drastically reduced.

Don't get Me wrong - I think that *if* google's gmail doesn't do all the potentially nasty things with users data it would be great. I just hope they have thought of this possiblity and have also created some means to deal with it.

V.90 modems are designed to be capable of receiving data at up to 56 Kbps from a compatible service provider and transmitting data at up to about 28.8 Kbps. Public networks currently limit download speeds to about 53Kbps. The free version of the drivers is limited to 14.4Kbps. Actual speeds vary and are often less than the maximum possible.

I mean WTF!!! Give us a break. I wouldn't use their crap if I had to spend a zillion dollars on a new modem. 13. Why SPAM sucks - for non-techies on Spam and the Law Conference Report · · Score: 1

I sat here at work reading this thread, seeing the comments of people equating spam to "junk mail", telemarketers, etc.
Then I realized that the best comparison to spam are unsolicited(junk) faxes....

Spam costs real dollars to most people who recieve it. If your email provider is filtering spam for you, you are paying for that as well through your monthly charges. Next, some people will say how does it cost you real money by recieving spam? Most people pay a flat rate for unlimited use of the internet. Well, not all people have that, plus if you do have unlimited use - your ISP's operating costs are higher becasue of thier cost for bandwidth.. those costs are passed on to you.

Now, how does this tie into junk faxes ?? Because if you recieve an unsolicited fax, if costs you paper, ink/toner/film, and wear on your fax machine. That is why the U.S. government made sending junk faxes a crime.

Now maybe all these people that have been complaining that anti-spammers need to "grow up" "take a chill pill" etc. will have a better perspective :)

That aside,I have wondered if there *could* be a valid use for Mod chips- recently I have seen a VERY real reason.... a 14 year old step-son. Why?? Because he treats his game discs like frisbee and the get scratched beyond recognition. You can't send them back and get a replacement or even a replacement at a reduced cost. You want it replaced, go buy the game again. He has right now over 10 games that won't read and from the looks of them nothing could possibly make them read ever again. So there went $500(US)! Therefore there Is a valid legal use for mod chips. So.. if the game industry wants mod-chips to go away.. start a replacement dics program. Just about All PC software companies do this already, so why not the console game companies ??
