source? Pretty sure the latest recorded freeze in the DFW area has been april 14th for something like that for more than 30 years. when 80% of the US has only had scientifically accurate weather data for the last 100 year or so. pull up weather records for your area and post them, i'd be interested to see factual evidence support your theory.
As anyone who's ever installed Linux knows, it's an incredibly rare event when Everything Works On The First Try
Whowhat? I see you've been labeled as a troll, but I can't let that comment pass, even for a troll
. My computer, with intel motherboard and processor on modern, circa January 2008 hardware and intel supplied drivers, can't even sleep/hibernate properly using windows. Under ubuntu I have no power option issues, on either my desktop or laptop. The only hardware issue i've ever had was the fucking ridiculous broadcom driver issue, and that's entirely due to the legalities of broadcom drivers and open source. Hell I had more issues getting my realtek audio working under windows (3 hours worth of googling, and much driver wrangling later, and i'm a championship googler), while i heard that ubuntu drum noise the first time it booted up under linux. I haven't installed linux on anything circa 1998 in a couple of years, but it has less driver issues than XP does on modern, brand name hardware.
Is this a parody? Or...? I can't imagine N. Stephenson signing off on this. I'm not a big fan of reading a synopsis ahead of time; if I hear good things about it I'll buy it and read it. The jocks in football jerseys sort of ruined any idea of the book being good. Or is this written in the tongue-in-cheek style of Snow Crash?
As someone else said, that's a terrible ping. You need to get line filters on all your phones and track down any other issues that might be causing that. If you're seeing above 100 for google (which is locally cached all over the country) and you're not using dialup, something's amiss.
How old is your computer??? I get 14 fps "rock solid" on de_dust2 on a 2004 era throw-away quality (free to me) dell lattitude budget laptop in ubuntu 8.04. I'll admit I upgraded the ram to a whopping 768 mb though. I didn't try out the steam overlay though -that is a bummer; I do use that a lot, lately as an aim/gchat substitute.
Per grandparent post, I live in Dallas; more specifically approximately a mile east of the central buisness district/downtown. I've had the same results in four different suburbs of Dallas. Sounds like you're getting at least the same quality of service I am - and I doubt it has anything to do with your connection being labeled business. We have two dedicated T1s at work and I get the same results, just better uptime.
200ms = "relatively"?!?! No offense, but WTF are you playing, WoW or something?
I'll admit I mostly play FPSes (TF2, CS:S), but as near as I can tell, anything over 80 is noticeable, 100 is pushing it, and anything above 120 noticeably affects gameplay. 200ms is almost unplayable and literally halfway to dialup pings. Once you factor in display (5+ms) mouse (5ms) and whatever internal delay on your system, it adds up quickly.
When was your ping issue resolved? Mostly I call it a myth because when the Cable vs. DSL war first emerged in 2000-2001 they had to come up with some sort of downside to cable. Even 8 years ago it was "in some cases cable may..." Eight years have passed and people still spout that shit off the same way they spout off how the Corvair was "unsafe at any speed" even though GM had resolved the issue with roll bars before Nader's film made it to theaters. I suspect cable companies solved the problem with capacity long before broadband made its way to the general population.
I only run windows because when I put together the system, voice chat in TF2 didn't work under wine (pretty sure it works now, I know it does in CS:S) and now I'm too lazy to reformat and install Ubuntu proper. I only use the computer for firefox, gmail (firefox) and steam games. I'm sure lots of other people only use windows because it meets a basic need and would gladly switch to something free if it were more convenient at install. If microsoft dies because people are pirating an OS they don't even sell anymore causes them to go under, so be it. Vendors will move to a more viable, free platform (likely linux). XP is only a vehicle I'm required to play my games and I have no issue "pirating" a copy. The value of the OS has decreased sharply, and if microsoft wants to continue charging above market value, so be it.
You can just gift the kid the game on steam, bypassing you a trip to the store. Or buy it on steam to begin with. It also drops the price of the game by $7-8 (or more, if you live in a rural area) by shortening the number of trips to the store by 1. You also have the advantage of being able to reinstall the game any time anywhere, with no worries about disc scratches because - there are none!
I heard this "myth" (that's right, I went there)... perhaps It's just that I've lived in urban and suburban areas with high population density (better cable networks than rural areas?) in houses and apartments, but my ping has never been above 80 to major gaming servers, and my bit torrent/steam downloads have never peaked at less than 880kbps, with ~700kbps sustained. Ever. There may be an exceptionally poorly designed cable network out there - somewhere - but it does not exist in the DFW (Dallas) area from what I can tell.
There is a java port of Quake 2 - called Jake, i believe. Very little is shared between 2 and 3 in the code, but interesting factoid. Runs well on a 1ghz computer.
Even in august it's rarely above 83 degrees by 9am here in Dallas. I don't stink when I get to work after a 15 min all-uphill ride to work (granted it's Texas and moderately flat but it's still a 150 foot vertical climb overall). It's usually 100 by 1pm or so and peaks around 4pm here.
Dude, WAKE UP - don't believe everything you read - especially the counter culture crap. How old are you? 15? 100 grams of fried potatoes wasted is nothing. I shit that much undigested food in a day. I also drink four diet cokes a day, which is wasteful and does nothing for me or the environment, but I'll take the little luxuries where I can. I do my part to conserve - I live close to work (2 miles by choice, and pay dearly for it), I leave the thermostat set to 83 (in DALLAS, in AUGUST), I take short showers during droughts, and I only water my garden - not the lawn. Fuck you and your judgment, I'll do as I please.
Shower before work and put on clean clothes before you leave. The clothes are (for your purposes anyways) sterile, as is your body. Just like you can't make a green oasis of a field from parched desert from an hour's rain, you can't stink from an hour's exercise right out of the shower. I'd recommend a shower after biking home from work however!
I was gonna say... $6 a day is about my average for lunch. Family of four will burn through at least $10 for dinner ALONE. I guess the kids eat at school, and if you have food stamps it makes it cheaper. $6 per person per day perhaps? Well if you buy in bulk and make dinner for everyone, then yes that's feasible. Even in 2004 one of my friends decided to try to live on $400 a month for food, we all had a good laugh. Rice and beans can only take you so far before you go crazy and need a good steak.
Prior to 1910 food was 35% of most people's budget - now it's around 15%. That is a pretty good improvement. Hell even a stoner making near minimum wage can afford mcdonalds (dollar menu), an Xbox 360, broadband connection, not to mention rent and his pot. Considering how low his economic contribution is, he's living pretty well for the (very) little he puts in 25-30 hours a week. But food is expensive and has definitely jumped about 20% (look at cheeses, fresh produce, etc) in the last six months.

Your broadband has already been flagged. Set down your broadband modem, and step away from the computer...

The deadliest person on a TF2 server is a HPB playing a scout! Impossible to hit!
Note to valve if you're listening - open up the chat protocol! I want steam text/voice chat on my blackberry/iphone!

Two words most people can understand; "Toggle Switch".

The short answer to his question would have been "Push F11", and then work forward to introduce mouse functionality.

I'd just put the drives in nitrogen filled sealed mylar static bags, along with anything else electronic or potentially fragile.

How much is liquid nitrogen? Do they charge by the mL?

It's too real to be a carefully crafted troll...

Yup, i.e. go for the regular size combo with no cheese(60 cal), eat only half the french fries (130 cal), and get a diet soda (300 cal).
Shower before work and put on clean clothes before you leave. The clothes are (for your purposes anyways) sterile, as is your body.
