    I have found by unhappy experience, that if I give someone a pc with Windows on it, it will cause me trouble for ever. If I give someone a pc with Linux on it, a few learning hurdles and then my time is my own again.

    I'm all for standards compliance. People too lazy to change from IE just get what they deserve.

    Personally, I don't publish anything to the web which isn't standards compliant. I just add IE hacks on top... That's the hard part...

    If all webdevs followed the standards, Microsoft would have to make IE standards compliant.

    If this were the only point against carbon dating and other radio-dating methods I'd have kept my trap shut.

    Unfortunately that seems to be the way of a lot of science today. Carbon dating is another minefield that comes to mind. The current mindset seems to take on popular theory and interpret it as fact. The scarier and more apocolyptic, the better. Very post-modern. Anything that doesn't fit that 'fact' has a fight ahead to even get published.

    You actually prove my point. One of the few times Apple loosened up (by licensing a spec to 3rd party manufacturers), the basic quality and design of the product (here the ipod) is allowed to tramp all over the competition. Imagine what could have been in the sphere of personal computing if they'd allowed Mac clones to continue...

    Apple will always use proprietary connectors etc. They're worse than Microsoft in regards to copyright and patents. If they'd loosened up 15yrs ago they could have beaten the pc as well as trampled whatever other market they chose to step into.
