"Rutkowska and Wojtczuk claim they found a method to bypass the system-level protection, allowing them to create a rootkit that installs in the SMM space."
Does this mean that even if you boot up from a CD (or format) the malware will still be there?
They probably had a download on BBC's website that had a EULA that laid out what was going on but of course NO ONE read it. So technically the user would have consented to being a part of this botnet.
Of course the article doesn't mention the details, so who knows.
Please note that if you use more than one type of browser or more than one computer to surf the Internet, you will have to opt out in each browser and on each computer that you use.
So how do they know it's YOU on all these different browsers\computers??
I'm not quite sure I'm convinced. I saw a documentary on this a few months ago that made it quite clear that the UAC doesn't really offer much value and is very annoying at best. I don't remember what it was called but it ended with the following quote (maybe you can use it to track it down online?)
"You are coming to a sad realization. Cancel or allow?"
This summary is laughably inaccurate, biased, and sensational.
Not to mention the "article" itself is poorly written and racist.
Quote from article: "And then America sends Louis and Clark out to explore, and it turns out there are all these dirty fucking NATIVES there. Luckily, they need blankets."
Ok, but that might backfire. Take this hypothetical situation as an example:
Let's say a Nigerian prince recently became the beneficiary of a large sum of money. Now in order to access that money he needs someone to lend him some seed money in order to fund the process to facilitate the release of said money. In return for the help, he promises to reward the lender generously.
If he can't reach you with his urgent message YOU will be the one losing out!
I'm running Liberum as well, we have 350+ users that we support. Works decently. Not very easy to make modifications without rewriting the whole thing though. We only get 10-15 tickets per day.
I couldn't find anything else that was FOSS that authenticated with Windows AD.
The RIAA, on behalf of it's client Universal Media Studios, has issued a DMCA take down notice for the lunar orbiter's obvious infringement of the copyright of the opening credits to the television drama series Hereos.
And then the dominoes will fall like a house of cards, checkmate!

If I have to explain it it's not funny!
Not as useful as inanimate carbon rods!
We all know they should evaluate his porn downloads, not Facebook, to get an accurate assessment of the impact to his enjoyment of life.
I just can't seem to figure out what compatibility mode to set my IE8 to to read the article...
QUICK! Mod him down!
He's ruining The Year of The Linux Desktop(TM)!
Well they were going to hire a FOSS candidate but M$ came in and offered Phil Reitinger at 75% off.
I hear they also threw in some CAL's and Vista upgrade licenses as well... at least that's how it worked out at my office

I've seen Tom Hanks using this.
Run Forrest run!
Satellite tracking is a much better idea.
True. I'd hate to be the guy running the CAT5 for this project!
I have a feeling things will turn bad for them (and us)!
The only porn ads I see with my TV shows are on Pirate Bay.
Hell, UAC is good. It's better than sudo.

Looking at the screenshots, it seems that they may have copied the maps. That may be their downfall.
Sounds like a solid business plan
...and who had Internet access as of February 19, 2009.
We can't stress this requirement enough. If you got internet access after this date you're obviously not 1337 enough for this contest.
It's akin to being OG and having a low slashdot id#
I'm gonna need that. Imagine watching porn on a mainframe? I bet I could have 60,000 videos running simultaneously.
Yes! We'll finally be up to speed with woman on the multiple orgasms issue!
If you're going to boldly go where no man has gone before, you wanna smell like it.
