but watching TV alone is like going to the movies or a restaurant alone- an asocial act of mental masturbation.
Well gee, I thought I went to that restaurant because I was hungry.
I don't see how putting food in my mouth or giving my attention to a movie is "asocial mental masturbation." In fact I feel a bit insulted by you saying that.
If you had of said "the root mean square of the velocities of the molecules of a gas" THEN it would have made some sense. Of course in that case, it would have been much better to simply say "the temperature of a gas".
What you said was just as non-sensical as saying , "If the average of a book is greater than X then Y will happen." What is the average of a book?
Of course, you are absolutley right. But I think that the parent's line was meant as a joke. I don't think anyone is going to literally "bring out the torches" either.
Yeah I got your point. It's one that I love to point out myself. There are many bands that don't give a damn about prohibiting music sharing because it can actually help them (assuming their music is good in the first place.) Most people don't know that the grateful dead allowed recordings, or that many bands still do.
Not that It makes a difference replying to a story that has dropped off of the front page, but I enjoyed your anectdote about Bill Graham:)
"It's a myth that hackers find the holes," said Nigel Beighton, who runs a research project for security firm Symantec that attempts to predict which vulnerabilities will be exploited next.
In the context of smart bank cards, the bank would send a random string to the smart card, and the card would sign that string using it's private key. The bank would then verify the signature using a copy of the card's public key. The private key stays on the card and remains, well, private!
The dead are still touring and still allowing concert recordings. There are many bands that still condone audience recordings. Almost all are "jambands" of one kind or another. Check out furthurnet.net and db.etree.org.
Telivision commercials use MY TV, MY Power, and MY time.
Billboards take up space in MY visual field.
Junkmail takes up space in MY mailbox, I have to use MY time to sort through it.
You seem to be saying that spam is not ok because, unlike traditional ads, someone doesn't make money by charging to deliver it to the public.
You'd rather the TV or billboard company make money for using your resources? How is that better than spam?
When you buy a ticket to a live performance, you expect to see real live humans performing. If some of the human performers have been replaced with machines, one should expect the ticket prices to be lower.
I would gladly spend "full" price to see a performance which was originally meant to be done by machines. But if the spirit of a performance is changed solely to cut costs, the savings should be passed along to me, or I'd rather spend my money on the real thing.
I don't know. In the book, the nanobots used visible light to communicate with and locate one another. I assumed that this was because the nanobots are so small that they can only fit tiny "antennas" inside. Those tiny antennas could only recieve EM radiation with very small wavelengths, in other words, visible light.
What are the true capabilities of a tricorder? What is the difference between a star trek tricorder and one from the next generation. Do they have tricorders yet in star trek enterprise?
So my question is, what exactly is a tricorder supposed to do?
I have vague memories of playing that title on my old apple IIgs when I was a kid. It's good to hear that it's still being used, although I bet it uses 3d graphics now or something.
Since its been around for so long, I bet one could find versions that would run under wine or a dos emulator.
Bill Nye was a great show to watch around 4:20 if you know what I mean. There were jokes all over the place. I loved the "X of science", where X was whatever item he was using to illustrate the scientific principle of the day. Also the music video parodies of current pop songs were hilarious.
Have you ever seen Bill Nye man? Have you ever seen Bill Nye, ON WEEEED?
All the "proof" that those things actually happened comes from the same source that predicted that they would happen in the first place. Surely you can see the problem with your assertion.
That definition says that the disnction between downloading and uploading is hazy, that usually a transfer form a larger computer to a smaller one is considered a download, a trasfer from a small to a big system would be an upload.
Who writes these definitions! Seems to me that the common usage of down/upload is just like the usage of import/export. When you download, your computer is recieveing information. When you upload, your computer is sending data to another computer. What's so hazy about that?
You raise a good point, one that other posters are using to put the original article into perspective. Perhaps I should have said that at any way you want to look at it, riding a bike is many orders of magnitude more effecient at transporting people than cars are at any level of description you care to look at. Be it counting simple calories expended per person mile, or the looking at the level of fairy magic where we think about things like animal feed and fertilizer.
Wouldn't it be interesting to see how much bio material is needed to give a person energy to pedal a bicycle for a mile. Methinks that it would be in the order of grams rather than tons.
That's not a DC generator! You've just got two coconut halves and you're banging 'em together!
My myth box can also play emulated games

How about "Uncle" on Jackie Chan's cartoon series.
Isnt it strange that the places where human life first arose (africa and middle east) are now shithole deserts? Do we see a pattern here?
Frankly, what you just said makes no sense.
Of course, you are absolutley right. But I think that the parent's line was meant as a joke. I don't think anyone is going to literally "bring out the torches" either.

That article is just chock full of gems.
Here's one

FurthUr.net Oops, should have previewed

People would get a new ISP.

Am I somewhat correct?
So my question is, what exactly is a tricorder supposed to do?
- Some obvious features:
- Temperature measurements
- Radiation measurements, light, radar, gamma rays, etc
- Communications capability
- Data storage/retrieval
- Radiation emmision capabilities
- Bells,whistles and flashing lights
What have I missed?Since its been around for so long, I bet one could find versions that would run under wine or a dos emulator.

The real story is that Citibanks fraud report page seems to be compromised. I'd say that's more dangerous than the password stealing scheme.
