There is nothing in our law stating that it is illegal to play region one DVD's in region 4. The whole region encoding thing is nothing more than a matter of standards compliance. It has no real legal basis. If it did, then you wouldn't be able to buy region 1 or region free players in Harvey Norman would you?

They most certainly do cable houses, as that is where most of their market reside.

And I covered the removal of nodes in an earlier post. I'm aware that Brisbane isn't fully covered, but it's in similar proportions to Melbourne and Sydney.

Not quite. The problem is more to do with the fact that Optus does not want the expense of wiring up units because it's just not worth their time and money when they can't know how many people will be using it in each lot of units.

And they are hardly rejecting unit dwellers from over demand. See this thread on WP. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t =1630972932

They're actually shutting down nodes, which to me says that they're not interested in being in the game for too much longer.

And that networking code as well. They knew that all those terrorist loving middle easters with their cable connections were just trouncing the poor old yanks on their 56K modems, so they threw in predictive network code. Damn that propaganda! :)

Not an option. They use transparent proxies on port 80. So unless the web server you are accessing is on a different port, then you have no option but to use their proxy.

As has already been mentioned a couple of times already by various people though, it's not really relevant as there will not be any active snooping. They are instead only acting on complaints.

  22. Re:Nothing to do with Copyright on Aussie ISP Scans Downloads For Copyright Violation · · Score: 1

Sorry, that's just plain wrong. The 3 gig cap was introduced by Telstra, which is Optus' only competitor in cable internet access within Australia. Optus itself offers an AUP that doesn't allow a given user to download more than 10 times the average use of all users over a 14 day rolling period. This in effect leads to a monthly download limit of anywhere between 15 and 19 gig.

  23. Re:Excite@Home The Only ISP in Australia? on Aussie ISP Scans Downloads For Copyright Violation · · Score: 1

Not an option. Optus@Home is one of two cable providers in the country. When the other cable provider leaves you with a 3gig download cap per month, you basically are left with the choice of our horrendous ADSL network, a 3 gig cap on Telstra cable or staying with Optus.

That being said however, the reality is no where near as bad as the story makes it out to be. According to the O@H CEO in this article, they are not actually monitoring downloads at all, but rather will only be investigating if someone dobs the user in for wrongdoings.
