I just left California for Boulder, Colorado for a paid internship as an Android developer, and so far it's only been a month, but I can definitely tell you it was a great decision. It's paid, the people are awesome about teaching the small things that you just can't pick up in a class (proper memory management, breaking functions down to small tasks, proper OOP, etc.) and reinforcing the ideas from Code Complete and Effective Java, the company is surprisingly good to their programmers and the fact that I'm not in a podunk farm down is amazing and all around it's been a ton of work, and a ton of learning. Add to it that the people I work with are all active in the meetup community, and I've been making connections that I'm sure will be incredibly useful when I graduate next semester.

Thanks for this piece. This is actually one of the things I heard early on in my degree program because they had the campus DBA teaching our databases class. Funny enough, I think only myself and one other person took his advice and learned general SQL and database structures, and it's already helped me in almost every project I've worked on.

I was actually lucky enough to have been there on Friday for the expo portion with a student pass, and I have to say the big companies didn't really show up for that portion. Sony and Microsoft had very light presence at the expo, despite having larger booths. Intel and AMD, along with various smaller vendors for something cloud based or app marketing based (that's about all there was in the small business area, apart from marmalade and corona). However, aside from there not being a big large business presence, the indie games were pretty awesome. I'm definitely going to buy Starforge this week because it was a mix of Halo and Minecraft, and I loved it.

This article makes people who listen to vinyl sound pretentious as all get out. I have a decent sized collection of vinyl records that I listen to daily, but that's mainly because I won a pretty sweet turntable and stereo set. MP3 has its place, like in the car and whatnot, but I do enjoy just putting on a record and listening to it from start to finish as well. I also enjoy owning the physical records and going through the case artwork, etc. A couple of my Floyd and Jethro Tull albums have photo books in them. I guess the point is who cares what form your music takes? If you enjoy it, go for it. If not, that's cool too.

Depends on your definition of standards. I go to a local State college because, well, it's local and I can afford it. If you're paying your own way, there's not a lot of chances for you to go to a very high end university for computer science. I am looking at alternatives for when (if) I get my masters, but I may just end up staying here because of that same exact reason.

What's really important for a computer science graduate isn't necessarily the school, but their own independent projects. While my school isn't the best, it does provide enough information to lay down a foundation for further self study, and those of us that are smart enough to take the initiative to learn additional platforms (Android, embedded systems and robotics, etc.) and build portfolios are doing way better than the others who are just in the major because they 'like the Internet' or heard that it pays well. There's a huge degree of separation between myself, who has just been offered an internship as an Android development intern for a large media corporation, and a couple of my friends/drinking buddy classmates who haven't developed their abilities outside of class projects that were required to receive a passing grade.

You make friends and team up and work on projects that would take you far longer on your own than if you hadn't collaborated and met people along the way. Example: I generally handle a lot of the Android, web and database stuff for my group of friends, whereas another guy handles circuitry if we want to do something with the Audrino, and is awesome at C and 80x86 assembly, and the last guy is _great_ with math and algorithms for making things "just work."
