Full disclosure: I am a Linux bigot. As to the first statement, yes, I do have to say, sometimes someone is genuinely 'blocked' as you put it --- stuck with Windows for some essential proprietary application. This is however, in my observation at least, much less often than people think, the primary driver being as someone mentioned in a post above, a management mandate to use Windows where you work. Other than that, the cases seem to be very specific and limited--- a hospital's MRI software or something like that.

As to the second statement, Wine/PlayOnLinux is viable for some things, but very definitely not all. Even a VM is not a solution for every application or game, so I don't go too far down that road when I recommend Linux. The real answer is finding Linux applications that do what you need to do, and I've been able to do that almost all the time.

Heck, my wife runs Linux and doesn't even know it, nor does she care. She does everything she needs and wants to do and I don't have to worry quite so much about malware.

If you had been paying attention you would realise that windows is not the same O/S you split up with in the 90's, it grew up when XP was released, you would be wise to follow its example, nothing says "bitter" as clearly as someone trying to belittle the people who learn to like/love their ex.

I started with Linux back in the very early 0.98 kernel days with a Soft Landing distro that installed from many floppies and needed nearly everything configured by hand. Things are much different now.

Windows too, indeed has evolved. XP wasn't all that bad, and that was the last Windows I used for many years until a month or so ago I finally upgraded hardware, and decided to leave Windows 8.1 on the machine alongside the Linux Mint installation I set up for dual boot. I learned that Windows had evolved into a steaming manure pile that is heavy on eye-popping color schemes and close to zero on usability. Now I'm told Windows 10 is better because it steps back, but on the other hand it's essential an advertising and personal data gathering vehicle.

Thank you, but I have actual work to do, so I'll stick with Linux, which today mostly works out of the box for me; and I'm willing to spend the time tuning the parts that don't work out of the box because the end result is an environment that allows me to be productive.

Gore's clowning approach detracts from discussion and realization of the actual issue --- you see or listen to him and you say, "this can't be true" and move on, which is unfortunately not helpful, because even though he is a clown, he could actually be right about some things.

Science is supposed to be objective, not political. But the AGW issue has become about 99% about politics. That will not help recognize and resolve the issues. And people taking obviously extreme positions (either way) detract from the discussion by diverting the focus onto their ranting and raving, rather than remaining with looking for viable solutions.

The point is that while some of those laws seem to serve a legitimate purpose (providing insurance protection for passengers, etc.) others are intended to protect the profits and often poor service of the taxi monopoly.

I don't believe Uber would succeed based on price alone; in fact at peak hours, Uber can cost as much as a taxi. Where Uber succeeds is in convenience and service. People ride Uber for a reason; if legal taxis were competitive Uber wouldn't have gotten traction in the market.
