Not to mention that high power hunting rifles that can kill from a half a mile away have the potential to kill far more people than a fully automatic rifle that is hard to control. See the Russian snipers during world war 2.
I don't see anyone calling for those to be banned.
Agreed, my undergraduate degree was just about the piece of paper to start a job in avionics software (kind of a requirement). It paid off quickly but hasn't grown much since then. Next I went back for a master's with the focus of personal growth. The second degree hasn't paid anything yet but there are some opportunities in progress that could develop into something much bigger than my first job.

I paid about half a year's starting wage for my degree in computer engineering. I don't think the problem is college, I think the problem is people thinking they have to spend ridiculous sums of money for it.
I ran into a licensing issue that was cheapest to fix with a Windows 8 upgrade. Everything seems faster than Windows 7 but it doesn't really provide additional useful functionality in my opinion (and I did just upgrade to an SSD before going to Win 8 so it may be that...).
But... but... all that money was already set aside. Do you know how much it would cost to reappropriate that money to pay city workers instead of build that building?
Well when we have only had an excellent view of the universe (Hubble telescope) and a few centuries at most of observing a universe that is supposed to have progressed for billions of years, its no wonder. Yes we are supposed to be able to use red shift and distance to determine a picture being older and then putting all these pictures together to form a timeline... but just because one star is pictured at a time before another star was pictured doesn't mean that the star pictured at the older age is younger. We are trying to piece together a really large movie from a few frames...
Every time we have a new way of viewing the universe it seems like scientists get results mildly or completely different from what they expect. I'm looking forward to the possibility of the data coming back from Voyager completely conflicting with expectations and resulting in new theories.
The idea of flight still applies. Flight of something that has all of its thrust propelling it forward seems impossible until we understood how a wing can produce lift. Yes the necessary forces to produce a planet in a sane amount of time are quite a bit different from that of a wing and may not exist at all. However we can't assume we know everything about how the universe works since our theories keep getting proven wrong (or incomplete). Unless we understand that there may be forces to the universe we don't know about yet, we will not recognize them when we finally see them.
No disagreement there but we went a really long time with nothing more than animal propulsion before we figured out other means. If humanity can survive for a long time into the future the the possibility exists of a similar drastic increase from present capabilities. Probability is likely against it but I'd rather shoot for the moon (or making one) and still be happy if I can at least get off the ground:)
I think I had West Nile during one of the outbreaks in the midwest during the late 90s or so. Had a night with the worst headache I've ever had in my life and the next morning I was fine. Could have been something else but with any luck I'm now immune to West Nile...
Once upon a time, a golden rule was that - if you need more than two clicks to get to the goal, the interface is a failure. I wish Microsoft designers heeded this lesson.

Ding ding ding! Winner! Just wish it was more blindingly obvious to MS...
Bah, I suck at linking (and previewing)...
Ahem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pearl_High_School_shooting.
Prevent, no. Prevent from becoming worse? Yes.

Summarily banning child protecting, emergency-aleviating technology
What happened to giving them your work place number like you know, your parents did? Children were just as safe before smart phones...
That worked when the places I worked at gave me a business number...

As they seem to want to filter the internet I want left unfiltered?
Well maybe if its chip 666... then again one of my IDs includes 666.
Well you can get to quite a lot of locations using public transportation. Not fast but you can get there. So public dial up?
So self medicating, wonder what doctors would say about this medication...
(Connection terminated unexpectedly)

And my thesis was flagrantly built on top of existing algorithms to improve what was there. I didn't create a whole theory from scratch...
Yep, so long as my mind works and I can still see and type at a keyboard, I can still write new computer programs which works for me...
This is why I stick with Verizon wireless. My company only blocks real bandwidth hogs like IRC... wait...

Probably why we haven't been contacted by the galactic empire yet. They just don't like dealing with us back arm hicks...
Yeah I mean what's with people who think humans can fly? There are just things that humans were not meant to do!
Everything is impossible until you figure out how to make it possible...
